Interesting thought about characters..

I just saw the movie again with my dad, who was really into comics in college, not necessarily Transformers but he read a lot of Marvel. At the end I asked how he liked it and he said he liked it, though some parts were too predictable and he would have liked to see more fights similar to Bonecrusher and Optimus(inflection on see) . Then I asked him if it bothered him that the humans were so two-dimensional, and he made a really interesting point.

He said that he wasn't bothered at all, because he really felt that the movie was a comic book. He said that it made sense that the characters were "flat", as some people put it, because they acted like comic book characters, and that there were some points in the movie that really made it feel like a comic book to him. His main example was Megatron basically introducing himself when he was unfrozen, y'know " I AM MEGATRON" Also, he noticed narration by characters throughout, like when frenzy was attacking the hackers in the room and they are already pushing against the door and someone says "barricade the door!!". And none of this to him was bad by any means, it was a fun way to do the movie. After he said all this it really made me see the human characters differently and I kind of appreciated the movie a bit more.

Sorry, I know that a lot to read but I thought this was pretty interesting. Thoughts anyone?

Oh, and it was even better the second time.

I agree.

But I always saw Megatron immediately saying "I am Megatron" upon awakening as THIS...

He's been wide awake this whole time. Wide awake and paralyzed. He's heard them calling him NBE-01 and he's probably thinking something along the lines of: "What's with this NBE-01 stuff? Quit calling me that, dammit! My name's Megatron!" I'd be pretty fed up with that too, after however long he's been in there.

So when he thaws I think he's like: "FINALLY! Enough with the NBE-01 junk! The name's Megatron! I'm MEGATRON, dammit!"

i agree. its good that you guys actually took the time to analyze the movie. people usually watch it and complain and criticize saying some parts were wack cause it was unnecessary. for example mikaela's character. people rag on her, when in reality she was a strong character whom we were able to watch her grow from a shallow high school girl into a courageous person; the same could go for sam. there are tons of things people deem stupid in this film, when really theyre just using their mouths to criticize and not their brains.

Wait a sec, how'd Megatron learn to speak English? He crash landed right upon entry and that was way back, even before the nineteenth century...

I think you missed an important paragraph there...

+1 for Night Raid, I like that theory you came up with.

In the comic he was aware of everything going on around him. I think it was fairly evident in the movie that it was the case, especially since he had a hatred of humans (wonder why) and knew English.

That's a nice theory on him saying that as far as the movie universe goes. My initial thought of why it was written for him to say it was that the writers decided to put it in because if they hadn't some people would be too stupid and keep thinking that his name is NBE-1. I know that sounds far-fetched, but trust me there are people that idiotic on our planet.

Anyone Else Like the Humans?

I might be alone on this, given all the criticisms I've heard or read about the movie and its balance of humans and robots.

One thing I like about the movie is that the humans were given screen time too. Contrary to the feelings of many that they didn't want to 'waste time' watching humans, I find it commendable that some effort was made to create interesting characters with different personalities.

I enjoyed how, in the brief time given, we were introduced to people like Sam's parents. I also like the fact that Earth's humans weren't portrayed as totally useless as far as defence capabilities go, the way it was in the G1 cartoons. It's comforting to know that our sabot rounds at least, can do some damage, and that we played no small role in the downing of Blackout and Megatron.

But you know what? Here's the thing: there will be people who complain that the humans wasted precious time that could be used to show the robots.

And if that was indeed what happened, there'd be people criticising the overuse of the CGI Transformers, and the movie being one dimensional and flat without the use of engaging human characters! It's similar to what happened with Star Wars Prequels (esp Attack of the Clones) when Lucas was criticised with overusing CGI without enough character development.

People will criticise when they wish to criticise. Lots of people criticised the Star Wars prequels on being short on plot, character development and acting, and using too much CGI. But looking objectively, what plot was there in the original episodes that was so earth shattering? And what about acting? The only outstanding actors were Alec Guinness, Ian McDiarmid and Harrison Ford. When the movies were originally shown, you can be sure more people went to watch because of the then state-of-the-art special effects than a Shakespearan treatment of character development.

The same thing is happening with Transformers I feel. I like the balance of screen time between our world and the Transformers. And for those who feel character development lacking, for both transformers and humans, remember the first in a series is always given to exposition. Once that groundwork is laid, and provided Bay doesn't screw up, I expect much better things on all fronts for TF2.

He's got a big ego, so of course he's gonna announce he's Megatron. I mean...he's Megatron!

This leads nicely into another question I had. What do you think it was like for Megatron to be stuck like that? What was going through his mind?

"692,556,827,925,645,227,395,128,997,305,281 bottles of Energon on the wall..."

"Note to self: blow up wherever the heck I am at first opportunity."

"BRRRR..."

"Why, oh, WHY didn't I land closer to the planet's equator?!"

"All right, I've almost got their language figured out. So now I've got a full complement of swear words to yell at them while ripping the place to pieces."

"I am SO bored..."

*insert incredibly long string of human and Cybertronian expletives here*

"...And that makes 275. I've heard 275 individual voices, so that's how many I have to kill."

"Grrr... Stupid planet, stupid radiation blind spot, stupid ice, stupid organics..."

"Oh, for the love of... What's keeping Starscream?! Come on, it can't be THAT hard!!!"

Since the general concensus is that he spent the whole time wide awake and paralyzed, what do YOU think was going through his mind?

Why didnt prime use his Blade against Megatron.. I would have been cool if he had sliced open Megs chest and megs had battered him down giving Sam the opening he needed to plunge the allspark in there...

Just a thought.
