How come Ironhide is always oh-so-shiny in car mode, while always so banged-up in robot mode?

Do they repaint him everytime he goes back to the garage?

Automated self repair.

They regenerate from the inside out, depending on how bad the damage is. Beyond a certain point (such as Bumblebee's voice box) some things require actual repair work by a medical officer such as Ratchet.

And why does their paint get chewed up like it does? Well...just watch the movie, it shows you in detail. lol

I'm surprised they're not chipping paint in sheets. lol

ILM said they needed the 'bots to look banged up a little to make it realistic.

As for the spit-shiny cars, Bay's guys had and annoying tendency of shining them apparently.

One minute Bumblebee is in pristine, shiny form in his car mode. The moment he transformed he looked filthy. I guess when your insides are shifted and hanging out, you're bound to get a little dirty. But considering all the shifting going on, I'm surprised they don't have little puffs of scraped-off paint every time they transform.

They probably have this "AUTO WASH" feature (from The Fifth Element).

This, in turn, makes the transformation sequence unrealistic. Makes it look like the car and the robot are 2 separate unrelated objects afterall.

You know, what with patting yourself on the back that much and all.
