Yes, Megatron could care less about the well being of his soldiers.

Simple really...Megatron has never cared about anyone or anything but himself and his own personal vendetta.

Aside from himself and what he wants, Megatron doesn't give a rip about much of anything.

It's kinda one of the requisites for being almighty lord of the Decepticons dude. If he decided to start having friends, then the next evil mofo in line would toast him and take over.

Megatron has never cared about anyone or anything but his own power. This has always been the case for every incarnation of Megatron as far back as G1. His bio in
More than Meets the Eye #3 puts it best with this line:
Megatron has always coldly expected the unadulterated adulation of others as a natural benefit of his existance; he does not appreciate it nor show any gratitude simply because he cannot fathom someone not accepting his superiority over them. He considers all beings his inferiors, mearly tools that exist solely to recognize his glorious destiny as ruler.
Simply put, Megatron is an extreme
megalomaniac with severe delusions of grandure. He cares for no one but himself and his dreams of conquest.

Yer but Megatron only went to the city straight away and he was in battle the whole time. He had no time to say oh no Blackout died! Oh no Brawl!!!

Well he never said 'Aww Blackout' did he?
I think in this movie universe Megatron is even more single-minded in his goal. He is like the genius who is so fixated on his research he forgets how to open a bottle of milk or clean himself (real story, I forgot the mathematician's name). Megatron is undoubtedly the most powerful and intelligent being in this universe (he even deceived his co-ruler Prime for so long), it's just that his strength is also his weakness. Kinda like how Prime's compassion in the city fight prevented him from gaining a destructive advantage over Megs.

I don't want to be nitpicky, but I don't think Megatron has delusions of grandeur. Heck, he was Lord High Protector, he didn't just WANT to be in such a high rank, he already was. He just wanted ultimate power. He and Prime are the most powerful entities on Cybertron, he knows exactly what he is - extremely powerful.
Ironically his carelessness for his army makes them less coordinated than the Autobots, and the only reason why they don't get defeated is because they have superior strength.

Yes, he was high rank, but, as you said, he sought
absolute power, and that is megalomania. That is delusions of grandure—believing that you are more important than you really are regardless of your true station. You can have a great deal of power and still have delusions of grandure. Also remember, Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely.

He was more powerful than Prime. I mean, it's quite understandable he would want more. The possibilities are literally endless with the Allspark - I mean, I don't approve of it, but if someone was as mighty and in such a high station as Megatron, I don't blame him for seeking it.
I'll still choose to Protect though.
