I don't think the name decepticon was ever explained in the movie...
I havn't read the movie comics, but maybe someone here who's read them knows?

It's a play on the word "deception", which is what the Decepticons used to rise to power in the first place.

Part of it comes from this quote by megatron in War Within:
"The ultimate realization of our primary agenda is at hand. Fitting then, that it too began undergound: hidden, wrapped in guile and subtrifuge. Such is the Decepticon way."

Transformers: More than Meets the Eye also provides this little tidbit in their secion on the Decepticons and their rise to power:
Megatron rose tp prominence as a star of Cybertron's gladiatorial games [See Gladiatorial Combat], which provided him with a platform to start attracting like-minded mechanoids to his cause. He stoked dissatisfaction with the Autobot regime, claiming that the establishment had been hindering their natural inclination for expansion and conquest. Megatron punctuated this by claiming he had heard of a vast deception, masterminded by the Autobot high council, which was keeping the inhabitants of Cybertron in the dark about their true nature, although he never explained the full details of this conspiracy or how exactly he discovered it, it didn't matter. His charismatic speeches swayed hundreds, then thousands to join his cause. Megatron dubbed his clandesitne organization the "Decepticons," an ironic nod to the alleged machinations of the Autobot High Council.—[i]Transformers: More than Meets the Eye #8[i]19 page

Why does it have to relate to the movie?

"Autobot" and "Decepticon" are part of the entire TF mythology and relates to ALL incarnations, not just the movie.

so is the autobot meaning just for the movie or for everything?

Burn is right. The term "Autobot" and where the name comes from is not limited to just the movie. If you break the name down, it makes perfect sense: AUTOnomous roBOTic organisms. "Auto" from the word Autonomous, and "Bot" from the word Robot. It applies to all TF lore. It is exactly what the Autobots are. Automnomous Robotic life forms. This is true in all realities.

The thing is, autonomous robots applies to all TFs, not just to the good guys. I always thought the 'Auto' was because of the huge numbers of car alt modes among the Autobot ranks. Did the 'autonomous robotic lifeform' explanation exist before the new movie?

So the 'con' in Decepticon means construct? I always wondered what that weird 'con' meant in Insecticons, Predacons, Terrorcons, Combaticons, Omnicons, Constructicons, Stunticons etc etc. I always thought it had to do with 'to con'

You do know that in reality Autobot and Decepticon mean nothing but good guy and bad guy dont you? All this rubbish about aotunomous robotic orginism and deceptive construct was made up way after the fact for , TV shoes, comic book, movies and so on.

Originally they were Autobots becuase they were AUTOmobiles that transformed into roBOTS and Decepticons as as Tramp rightly points out is play on the word "deception" in that they are deceptive bad guys. Further to this specific splinter groups were names watsit-bots or soandso-cons depending on their parent allegience. That really is all there is too it.

Yours AK

It only applies to the Movie. Or at least, started with the Movie.

The original Autobot name alludes to the combination of "automobile" and "robot". It was originally meant for kids, to sell toys to kids. Back in the 80's, you can't sell such a highly technical word "autonomous" to kids.

The original first set of Autobots all transforms into automobiles.

The "con" in Decepticons did not mean "construct". The name Decepticons was coined out of "deception" and "con", only to point out this faction is extremely evil. As a contrast to the good guys Autobots.

"Con" means cheating, or someone who cheats.

Initially, all good guys were land transport vehicles. So it was easy and obvious to give them the name Autobot, by combining the words automobile and robot.

But there's a problem with naming the bad guys. The alt forms of the initial set of robots were not consistent. There were jets, radio cassette, a gun, and camera. So they have to turn to other aspects for the name. Eventually, they would be named to show that they were the evil guys.

I believe the literal translation is "one who deceives".
