Well, when Banachek showed the Secretary of Defense the footage that the Mars rover recovered, did that frame of the robot remind you of anybody?
Kind of made me think of Bumblebee.
Also, why would a Transformer be on Mars?
Just idle speculation.

In the prequel comics/DVD, it was destroyed by Starscream.

Yeah, I thought is was Blackout, but now that you mention it.....
Anyhow, yeas, Screamer probably did it.

It could have been Blackout, or Barricade that did it. I'm just guessing it was Starscream because of his line "As long as I get to kill something."

I'm going with Blackout on this one.

Starscream doesn't exactly say "As long as I get to kill something" to me - It just isn't him. Either Blackout or maybe Barricade.

I paused that scene...It didn't look like Starscream, because that is who I thought it was. Its basically a shadow. It probably was Starscream.

The head is nicely rounded like Starscream, even if he's in Protoform. Which brings up.. wouldn't it be Starscream since he's the only decepticon to get a Protoform toy, and that's the only time we really get a glimpse of a decepticon protoform, the scene on Mars?
But I too ask... why are they stumbling around a baren planet?

Well, in the comic, didn't the Rover get an image of Bumblebee? In the movie, it looked like Bumbles was the one that destroyed the Rover.

The image of BB came from Hubble, IIRC.

From the actual teaser trailer, it did look like Bumblebee, but the prequel comics do show Starscream destroying the Beagle.
I think the official story is Bumblebee followed Megatron to our solar system, landed on Mars for some reason (maybe Megatron had landered there too or he was simply surveying), an image of Bumblebee was captured by the Rover (as in the comics), then later on, after Bumblebee had journeyed to Earth, the Decepticons arrived on Mars (either to survey Earth or detected some trace of Megatron and / or Bumblebee) and that was when Starscream destroyed the Rover (again, as in the comics).

They were searching, planet to planet for the Allspark and Megatron, according to the Ghosts book. They were systematically ruling out each planet, or they were using mars to spy on Earth, and didn't know the moon's schedule was clear all year. (except for some Atlanteans still there on the Dark Side hiding from Nasa probes)

Actually, it was the Visitor Motherships hiding that took up all the room

When sec-def is looking at the pics of blackout and the one from the rover, doesn't he say that they are the same exo- or endo-skeleton type?
Pretty sure

I'm pretty sure it was Starscream in the comic when he was there with the rest of the crew before landing on earth. But then again... I'm sure that when they came out with the teaser... even the powers that be didn't know who it was gonna be. For a long time I thought it was Bumbblebee be until the comic confimed that it was Starscream. Plus in protoform... the frame looks mostly like he does.

It was Blackout. Didn't Mister Sector Seven Dude (I suck with names and I'm not sure if that was Simmons) say that the silhouette in the Mars pic was identical to the pic taken in Qatar?
Yeah but...

....I think he was comparing pictures not saying it was exactly the same one. I could be wrong.
Starscream for sure

I just looked at the Protoform Starscream toy above my TV in my "Nerd Room," and it looks like it was him for sure. Same exact head and hands.

"of the same type" means that they are the same species and of the same orgin. "exactly the same" would mean it was the same robot most likely. Since humans know next to nothing about autonomious robots from space, they've relied on the exoskeletal characteristics to identify one. They never meant to infer it was one robot over the other anyway. And if it was the same bot, it'd surely look different on Mars in its protoform then it would on Earth in its scanned form.

I think that's just a fancy way of saying they were the same race.
