Transformers Movie invades MySpace.com

Transformers The Movie. MySpace.com. Some of us can't get away from either. Show the folks working on the Transformers Movie how much we support the flick by making the Movie's MySpace page one of your friends. Heck, you can even pick whether or not you're an Autobot or a Decepticon. You can view the Transformers Movie MySpace page at http://myspace.com/168783921. While you're at it, click here to view Seibertron.com's rather uneventful MySpace page. Truth be told, we'd rather you visit Seibertron.com instead of our MySpace page but we're glad to have your support wherever we can get it.

Is Megatron's face different from the previous photos we have seen of it?

They must have some kind of automated "add to friends" thingie going, because damn that was quick. Wonder if they'll let me add the trailer to my page the way I was able to with the Super Bowl spots I liked.....

I think they did change it at some point. Also remember this is what I think you'd call a portrait shot, where we're looking at the sides of their heads.

Wonder if it'll be 3D. Nephew was able to get into a Meet the Robinsons sneak preview, and I've still got the glasses from getting to go along (they're a lot better than those cheesy red and blue cardboard things they used to have).

Alright, somebody humor me with this train of thought for a moment. How does the Transformers Movie Myspace page get over 30,000 members in the first 5 or 6 hours of it being live? I know Transformers are pretty damn popular but something seems a little fishy. Especially when you look at who the top people are in the list. That, or this is the beginning of what the next few months are going to bring those of us who have loyally followed this hobby prior to the movie coming out. I call shenanigans.

I've already pointed out the auto-add to friends thingie, but that doesn't explain having 30,000 friends..... I call shenanigans too.

I'm not trying to sound like a spoilsport, it just sounds like bullshit that there'd be 30,000 insta-fans in 5 hours to sign up. I've seen this before with some of other insta-MySpace pages in the past but not being a part of other hobbies I couldn't really judge.

I mean seriously ... these people in the top 8?

If I'm wrong, then the movie folks were right in making the decisions that they made with the movie. If they're right, then they did the right things by ignoring what us hard core fans have demanded/requested/suggested. If they're right ... there are tens of thousands of Transformers fans who are very anxious to see this movie who have nothing to do with Botcon or being a part of the fan websites. I don't have a problem with this ... that actually proves my theory that there are tons more fans out there then there are members on the sites.

Ah, my mind is just reeling at the whole 30,000+ members in 5 or 6 hours on the Transformers Movie MySpace page. I am perplexed and would love to hear some more thoughts on this.

Don't leave Jeffree Star out, if you wanna talk about the top eight.

I don't blame you though. How the hell do you make 30k worth of friends in 6 hours? It is rather hard to believe, even with the auto-add to friends thingie they've got going.

I don't know, it's sounds a bit weird to have that many in a few hours, but then again, isn't everybody on a popularity contest on My Space, they will join anything or the invites where sent a little about of the movie, and a lot of something else on any 80's topic? Then again, if the fan base is that huge, then why didn't they listen to the fan base about all the wrong with the designs or what not, of this movie at least a little bit or do most of the fans like the new designs, excited reguardless ( like me), etc? I don't know, I'm confusing myself, but yeah, good luck with that Bay, and I mean that with no bad intentions. :)

The woman in the 3rd photo actually seems like she might be legit. I've seen women like her be really geeky deep down.

Still...I think this is ridiculously cool.

I wouldn't make anything of it. You've actually got a leg up on me though. Most of the things I've come across that I thought were news worthy actually weren't at all. (Remember those KB exclusive Universe repaints of Snow Cat and Downshift? I thought my finding them was news, but they'd actually been out a while by the time I found them.)

It's happened a few times in the past couple of weeks.

It's a promotional game.

In my experience working wtih myspace at Victory Records, they would have no problems beefing up the profile to look like more people are actively supporting the promotion. All in all, it make the casual viewer think WOW, I'm missing out! And that's what Myspace is all about. It's Spam 2.0, and putting a quick 30,000 friend on there only speeds up the process.

We had a "bigshot" from myspace come in our office one day and this was before they sold for a billion or whatever. The guy was a total smoosh. He was in Chicago for the "myspace party" at the metro. Our joke was everyone walked around with dry erase boards writing comments to each other on them. haha

But yeah, promotion is promotion. It doesn't really "hurt" to fake 30,000 friends. It just means there were 20-30-thousand LESS participants than they expected.

ALSO, did anyone realize that myspace releases a brand new feature with this movie? The ability to make PHOTO ALBUMS. Kind of a big deal... with Xmen 3 they allowed you to make more than a top 8 friends, which people had been begging for. That just makes even more people become friends with the promotion.

And There is definitely an auto-friend acceptor, however I am not accepted yet....

The movie's pay BIG MONEY for this kind of exposure. Someone should keep track how long it's up!!!

I am stoaked, only I was hoping for the new trailer soon. :-)

Wait, have they released that feature to tie-in with the movie, or is it just coincidence in timing?

Hang on. So... the first trailer is downloaded some mad number like 2 million times in the first 24 hours, but people can't believe the Myspace page can gather 30,000 friends in a few hours?

I would think that more than 90% of the people on the friends list for the movie page are of the "I remember Transformers! There was one that was a truck!" fraternity who remember TF as something they liked when they were kids but they haven't thought much about since. The Marvel comic back in the day sold 1,000,000 copies a month in the US alone and the cartoon reached at least ten times that many kids who, barring accident or misfortune, are all still around today. They think of Transformers as something cool, but all they know about them in recent years is that there were some posters and T-shirts in music stores recently and according to the paper/MTV/myspace, they're now making a movie about them.

Transformers is a big part of pop culture history. The number of people who remember it fondly far outweighs the number who are actively involved in the online fandom. Those who grew up with TF (ie pretty much anyone from the 80s and 90s) are also in the right age range to be your average Myspace user. 30,000? No problem.

At least, as far as I can see.

Yes, on your picture page it says to "transform your pictures"

My point is that whenever someone else posts news and its posted a few times by a few other people around the same time everyone gets credit for it.

I posted it an hour before Seibs did and I don't get squat, not even an honorable mention.

as for the crap loads of friends, i know how its being done

i got the auto frind thing for transformers, but i got a second one for clicking join the decepticons. theyre both the same page, so people who are "joining" the bots or cons are being added and counted twice, not to mention i see a lot of friends there that are onmes that spammed me when i first got a myspace page. half of said accounts were deleated for being spammers.

Right and right. I noticed being counted twice as well. And with the way Myspace has been lately, most of the friends on there have to be spam accounts. The regular members like us just delete the numerous ones we get a day(one day within 10 min. I got 50 spam hits). But as far as a promo site goes, they'll most likely approve all to bolster the numbers. Then the numbers generate interest, so on and so on. Marketing at it's most basic, but hey what's it gonna hurt. All that's gonna do is make sure the movies a hit money-wise.

They didn't get 30,000 friends in 5 hours, they bought 30,000 in one minute. It's a marketing campaign, folks, and there are dozens of companies out there that sell these kinds of "insta-friend" services. Just look at how marketers manipulate Digg.

And yes, myspace is a high-school popularity contest.
