Now that Toshiba will no longer promote the HD DVD format or produce players I wonder if we will finally get the movie on Blu Ray?
For info see

Here is the official press release from Toshiba. HDDVD is dead and I am betting Paramount will be issueing a statement later this week siding with Bluray. A TF BD just got a lot closer.
http://www.toshiba.co.jp/about/press/2008_02/pr1903.htmFor those who argued with me on this subject over the past year, I tried to warn you, hopefully not too many of you bought HDDVD players or addons for your 360.

It was obvious Blu Ray would win, it has the cooler name.

HA, I have NEITHER Blu Ray or HD so take that TOSHIBA.
In reality im just a poor bastard who'd rather spend his money on TF's and my boy rather than a PS3 that will be obsolete faster than the time it took me to earn the money to buy it.

Format wars and internet fights were designed by Unicron in order to gather massive amounts of negative energy.

Sony say they expect the PS3 to have a 10 year life cycle. Of all the Blu Ray players the PS3 is probably the LEAST likely to become obsolete as its firmware is easily updated. The Blu Ray software has already been upgraded at least once to accomodate the picture in picture feature found on some of the recent discs.

With all due respect Ravage, I expect to get a raise at work soon. As I've expected it for some time now. I also expect some other more advanced for of player to come out much sooner than 10 years, making any updates more than irrelevant.
Don't get me wrong. PS3 is kick ass, but there's always something better on the horizon. Which is why I still love and play my old PS2.

I read your post to imply that the PS3 would be obsolete in 10 years, it may be but we have to go with what Sony tell us. It seems that you meant that the Blu Ray format would be obsolete within 10 years. That is probably true, tech now moves very quickly. Look at TV sets, for years it was Black and White then you got the option of colour, then widescreen, then LCD and plasma, then HD. Soon OLED will become mainstream and there are even higher resolution formats being developed.
Thing is at some point people will say enough is enough and wont welcome yet another new format.
Oh and good luck with your pay rise.

Can't argue that. But I always welcome new cool stuff. Affording it is another story. Thats where the raise comes in.

Thanks but I doubt its gonna happen.
Is there a thread discussing the pro and cons of Blu Ray VS HD? Im curious. I've never seen either to be honest with you. I have an HD tv, but when you don't have an HD movie it actually looks worse IMHO.

To be honest I dont think that there is really that much in it. Blu Ray has more storage space ( i think ) but it also has tighter DRM ( not that it really matters, its already been cracked, I'm sure I read that somewhere ).
Wikipedia has some articles on both formats, see the HD DVD one here
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HD_DVDI dont know how you have your system set up so I cannot comment on it but I dont have any problems viewing standard def stuff on my HD screen, some older programs can look worse than others. I caught an episode of Star Trek The Next Generation at the weekend and it looked washed out but that may be the broadcast media. The screen has an internal decoder for digital tele and the PS3 up-scales DVDs to 720p or 1080i and are transmitted over the HDMI cable and they look great.
I would sing the praises of an up-scaling DVD player to anyone with a HD screen, it makes a world of difference.

Thats probably my problem. My DVD players older than some members of Seibertron.
My TV gets a kinda grainy look with non HD stuff. The HD is amazing, but non HD sucks. I use a regular telly to view non HD stuff and play my PS2. lol

Looks like my Kickass HDDVD player I got for Christmas is now just an overpriced Upscaler. Can I at least get a trade-in value on a blue-ray player?

Makes a bloody good job of it also. You need to update your firmware to so it though (unless you have one of the newer machines which I imagine have it pre-loaded). Just check the settings menu and you will find the controls for it.

The upconverter on ps3 is awesome. I must have watched my 2007:TF dvd 30 times before I got my ps3, and I couldn't believe the difference it made. I could actually see Prime and Ironhides teeth rotating in thier lower jaws.
Still can't wait to get it on Blu-Ray though. I was torn between buying a ps3 or an HD-DVD player so I could get the Transformers movie, guess I'm glad I went with the ps3. It upconverts beautifully and the games and blu-ray disks look awesome. It actually does alot of pretty cool stuff for a pretty low price.
Hopefully the ps3 will be around for quite some time. I'm pretty sure I've been playing my ps2 at least 10 years, so hopefully I'll get the same life out of my ps3.
kinda funny now that I think about it, but I've had my ps2 for a really, really long time with no problems, and at the same time I must have gone through 4-5 different Xboxes. (overheating, disk read errors, etc.) Yeah, now that I really think about I'll just be sticking with sony. I've had really good luck with them and they make a good product.
So the HD - Blu Ray format war is finally over. Awesome! Glad I chose well. New technology trumps upgraded technology for the win.
