I just got thru seeing the new movie trailer spot where Prime talks....what's up with the sound of his voice??? It doesn't sound much like Peter Cullen's voice of the Prime we know and love!

Maybe they asked him to lower his pitch?

It's most likely the combination of 20 years, bad sound compression, and whatever effects they did to the voice.

The difference in Prime's voice has nothing to do with Cullen's age - it's because of another factor [or factors] such as electronic alteration, Cullen's performance changed on Bay's orders, possible poor compression of video [though other sounds don't seem affected much, if any, in this regard].

I'm sure we've all listened to the "Make Prime Speak" clips and here's a much more recent recording from the short interview of Cullen and Welker about doing the voice overs for the game.

You'll hear Cullen as Prime a couple times - about 49 seconds in and then again at the very end {about 1:09}.

I agree with Shadow, Cullen is either using a different voice, or his voice has been altered for the movie. This certainly makes me wonder- "why bother putting in Cullen if you're not going to use the Optimus Prime voice that we know?"
:???:

I was thinking about this maybe because this is the first time Prime is on Earth he will sound a bit different and later as he hangs around Sam/Spike he might just starts sounding like G1 Prime

Peter Cullen said he put some of John Waynes voice into it Maybe he will see an old movie of his and start talking like he did in the cartoon

Hmmm.. I really don't see this happening.
I agree with the others that said it may have to do with Bay wanting to change things a bit..
All of our questions will be answered soon enough.

After seeing the 22 minute preview, and hearing more of primes voice. Which I agree, sounded different the G1 Prime, although it is still undoubtedly Prime.

Then comparing it with the Transformers: The Game but he did...

Originally I thought he had just aged, but I think Bay wanted the Transformers in the Movie to convey more Size and Bulk, so the voicers are deeper, and a little slower.

In the Cartoons, the Transformers were our normal frame of reference, so they spoke, generally, normally, but in the movie, which is based on a human sized frame of reference... I think they just wanted to show that more clearly ?

Primes voice is definitely slower, deeper and a little more gravelly in the movie though.

Like someone bearing an overwhelming amount of responsibility and also worries about the Decepticon threat?

I thought I read somewhere a while back that Cullen himself decided to change the voice of Prime...make it a bit deeper and darker to give the character a bit more depth :-? ... or something like that.

Either that or I've gotta switch my meds :P

Thats a distinct possibility, But I didn't feel that from him when I saw him ?

Guess we'll have to wait for the movie :P

Neither did I, though it is hard to tell from one short line of dialogue. The full movie is the only way we'll tell, really.
