That's not justification. You can have a bad experience anywhere, doesn't mean it's a bad place. The "scariest" city I ever was in was Omaha, Nebraska, I felt like a target walking around, doesn't mean the city is bad.

NY City is one of the leading cities in the world for Art, Food, Business, Nightlife, Entertainment, Shopping and pretty much else any other city has to offer. The state itself has Ocean beaches, lot's of lakes, Mountains for Skiing, tons of National Parks and is also loaded with historic sites. It gets true 4 seasons and doesn't suffer from major earthquakes, tornadoes, or hurricanes. Plus it's accessible via 3 international airports from any place in the world. So I really don't see the point of the comment.

Truth.

But for someone somewhat small-minded, one bad experience can ruin the outlook. As you said, it's not a justifiable reason.

(Omaha? Really?)
