The one thing that's going to really hurt Transformers, in terms of ticket sales, is going to be the new Harry Potter flick. Even though I feel like those movies have been going down in terms of quality, that's going to pull a lot of the audience. IMO, it would probably take a big opening weekend(a 3 day haul close to, if not beating out, Spidey 3's record) to pull it off.
Of course, if TF connects with the general audience in a way the "threquels" didn't and drops less than 65-70% like they did, all bets are off. But again, with Potter, that's going to be hard to do.
On the other hand, I think the movie's going to be more profitable, given it cost $150 mil, while Spidey 3 was listed as $250, with rumors of overruns that pushed it toward $300 million.

Not right away. Out of the gate, Spider-Man 3 was already clearly going to break records due to the popularity of its first two parts. However, if audiences find Transformers good, and give it good word of mouth, I think it might break Spider-Man's record, but doubt it due to Harry Potter

the harry potter audience and the TF audience are two different people...Harry Potter will not drasticly effect TF at all...
Harry Potter attracts children...and some adults who are into the books
Transformers attracts children and almost every adult male on earth..not to mention anyone else looking for an action flick...

spidey 3 (while terrible) is the highest grossing "blockbuster" of the year so far, although it made less than spidey 2 some years ago (as did shrek 3 compared to the second, and pirates 3 even less than the second).
in fact, spidey 3 atm is at 326mil in US, 538mil rest of world, for a total of about 864mil worldwide, which is REALLY good, and more than spidey 1 and 2 did worldwide (atm its 12th in highest grossing movies ever) and Transformers wont reach those numbers.
realistically, it should do about 200mil+ (and thats hopefully, brand names like pirates 3 and shrek 3, although suffering from sequelitis, only did 250 and 280) in the states, and about 400mil+ in the rest of the world. hell, if it breaks 500mil worldwide would be awesome (budget was 250mil i think?), and imediatly guaranteeing 2 more movies

i dont think it will. this is the first movie so people might not expect it to be as good. people know how the spiderman and pirates movies were like so they know if they will like it or not. there might be more transfans though since adults will wanna see it since they liked them when they were younger. but i still dont think it will beat spidey.

spidey 3 opening weekend - 151mill, highest ever
pirates 3 - 114mil, 5th highest ever
spidey 3 reminds me of X3, which was terrible, and ended up doing more money than the previous 2. which is the reason i dont get they not moving with X4

the movie is too good for words.. It is going to blow spiderman out of the water.. There are less copies being released of it the spiderman and unlike spider man that made most of its money the first two weeks, this will bring people back.. it is just the right lenth, so they can have more shows and everyone (including bay) did a great job with this movie
two thumbs up.
ok, it might not beat spiderman.. but it will be close if not tied.. at least i think after seeing it.

the question wasnt if it "blows spiderman away" as a movie, it was if it will make more money than spidey 3, which it wont probably (900mil worldwide now for spidey, only 3 films have ever made more than 1bil worldwide). but as a movie im 100% sure it will be better

It is a better quality (at least in my opinion )then spiderman 3. It probubly won't make as much as spiderman worldwide, but if you look at spiderman, after it made it's money, it kinda dropped off. There are alot of tf fans all over the world and this will make a ton of money. Spiderman has had two movies to build up the antisipation for the let down the movie was. WHen transformers part 2 comes out or even 3. World records are going to be broken.
i think it will come close to beating it in the U.S.. but thats just me

I think it will do exceptionally well opening weekend. It's honestly getting more airtime on TV that even Spider-Man 3 did. I see at least 2 tv spots a day. Everyone is excited for this movie. Even my parents want to go see it. This is 52 and 54 year olds thinking it looks good. And it's really the only worthwhile thing to see that weekend. I can see it breaking 100 million. Won't beat SM3's record but damn I'm sure it'll get close. I think what might hurt it is Bays name plastered on it. A lot of people don't like his work and that might possibly hurt ticket sales.

agreed. it wont do as good but it will get up there. my sister wants to see it bad too, and shes going on 20 now, and has never liked anything i do.

it also hasnt had any movies before it unlike spidey and pirates. for those movies, people knew what to except..but not with TF.

Im not thinking about how much Transformers will make compared to Spidey 3, but more how im worried that Harry Potter opening a week after might squash any potential sequels
