The movie starts with an attack at a SOCCENT base in Qatar. Qatar is located on the Arabian peninsula.
License plates suggest that the Witwickys live in southern California.
It takes a little over a day for Barricade to reach southern California from the air field where Air Force One landed, indicating that the air field was located somewhere in the central U.S..
Bumblebee was captured in a concrete-lined river. There are at least two such rivers - the Los Angeles River and the Santa Ana River.
In the climax, the Autobots head from the Hoover Dam area in southern Nevada to Los Angeles via U.S. 95, Interstate 40, Interstate 15, and San Bernardino Freeway. This would be a trip of about four hours thirty minutes. The battle between Optimus Prime and Bonecrusher occurred on the 15 near the junction with San Bernardino Freeway in Ontario, California. After the battle was over, the Autobots headed west to Los Angeles, where the final battle took place.

I agree, I would liked, I love the argument of the G1 comics, being in a "remote" forest zone of the wide US...

At Hoover Dam, Captain Lennox claimed they were headed towards the nearest city called Mission City. However, the skyline is clearly LA.

Would you prefer LA over MISSION CITY?
I think not.

The nearest city to Hoover Dam is Boulder City, Nevada.

Yep, they called it Mission City, and in real life the nearest city to Hoover Dam is Boulder City. However this is an Earth in a Universe with giant transforming living robots ,so geography may be a little different.

how about when optimus and the crew look at the glasses(after they pick them up out of the riverbed) and say they need to go 230 miles due south? - to the hoover dam which is where the allspark is / then he gives the speech of it's been great working iwth you all.. etc.. and then they drive off.. that's kinda been weird to figure out. because where he gave that speech is the town that most movie events (sam lives there - they all arrive in protoform there, etc) occur in. which is somewhere in the middle eastern edge of nevada then.

What is stranger is all of the California license plates.
Those would be pretty common in Las Vegas, not in some town in the middle eastern edge of Nevada.

Maybe he was reading it upside down.

IIRC, the Witwickys live in the town of Tranquility according to the novelization, but they didn't specify a state
