It's been awhile since I've had to start a bot completely over without any stats at all, and I was wondering what any of you might recommend for a starting set-up or starting stat?

Strength, speed or courage are what my first upgrades will be. Followed by ram or avoid, depending on what's available, after I've got a couple of upgrades

i would think courage and/or strength with a tatic (any of the 3 avoid, ram, or strafe) are a good starting point.
i discourage, atm, any repair stuff.

Speed is a feeder stat for avoid (50 xp per avoid is pretty good right now) and it also improves accuracy

How would a speed courage and tactic combo work?

will cost u more to upgrade the 2nd choice (either cour or spd depending on which is 2nd) & thus will take u longer to hit lvl 1.
cons are loading spd with tactic (avoid, ram)--the shortest way to get to lvl 1

Rammer-types --> Strength and/or Ram
Avoider-types --> Speed and/or Avoid
The best way would probably to go with SPD/Avoid. It's by far the best tactic for low levels.

either: avoider probably gives quicker payout, but i've got a rammer that i'm dumping into. he's currently leading my team & doing well with 1 spd/ 1 ram + null
I'd stick with spd. i contemplated str but i think spd is > str at lvl 0

I might be a new guy, but I can say this. Before the great crash of 08 I started talking to people and compiling data.
This is what I can say.
Up to level 1 with 80k xp this is what I've found.
Avoiders make the most xp/money. They tend to be the most successful. Starting of with speed / avoidance combos allowed my bot to remain alive 42% of the time. I also had a 5-11% increase in contact with the opponent over a span of 38 rounds. That 5-11% came from an increase from 0 to 3 speed. I've broken down the fuzzy math, but I will not release it till I have seen if there are any changes with the new version of the game.
Rammers do tend to make the 2nd most damage. The benefit of Rammers is 2 fold. First tactics seem to bypass the avoidance (IE I appeared to get rammed more than actual hits). Rammers other benefit is that the more points that you put into str allows you to wear armor. 3 tons of armor did decrease overall damage by about 3-8% (12% if you count unarmed Rank 0 vs Rank 1).
Strafers Tend to do the most Damage. Speed plays a huge role along with Strength.
Endurance (2 pts) did decrease overall damage, but unfortunately I could not tell you by how much because I did not put it on a bot that was not equipped with armor.
Courage (3 pts) did give me an average of 1.8 more attacks.
Firepower only allowed me to have a better weapons (which I can not vouch for effectiveness due to the str).
Rank / Int did nothing for me at low levels.
Best combo, Speed/Str/Avoidance/Str/Speed/Speed/Avoid/Avoid/Avoid.
Second Best STR/Spd/Strafe/STR/SPD/STR/Strafe
Why was the Stafers second best? Avoidance gave me more XP and triggered more than strafe. Strafe did rack up more damage and would net me a fair chunk of xp, but was not consistent at lower levels.
I did notice the best toons in the game before the big crash were tanks. Ram/Strafe was the best combo I was told at higher levels mainly due to tactics bypassing avoidance.
Good luck to you

Dont worry about sucking right now. Its early in the game and the cons rushed out of the gate. All we have to do is keep sluging it out and make good upgrades. This game isnt a sprint but rather a marathon. Enjoy the free cr and make the most of what we can do

From where we're at, the stats to focus on are probably spd, cour, & tactic (avoid>ram/strafe)...in no particular order.
If someone notices str being helpful, let us know; otherwise, i'd save str for the next level.

FYI: if ur looking for a good alt, try the fighters & fill spd + avoid (avoid is 1,000xp for 1st upgrade)

If you start off with a Rammer/Stafer, then Strength does help
You can use armor to make up for the avoidance. 3 or 4 tons of armor will reduce the damage enough to give you a chance to survive a fight longer. Armor is applied damage reduction while speed/avoidance is a chance reduction.

i suspect u won't gain much xp as compared to the other approach

Probably not. Every time you successfully Avoid, you gain 50 xp and 50 energon, so it'll add up eventually.

True the initial start off is poor, and dodgers gain faster, but at current levels, since we are all even it is a matter of balance.
My rammers are almost as good as my dodgers and tend to do more damage.
