i was talking to someone today about a transformer tier list and it got me thinking. most fighting games have a fan established tier list, but i dont think ive heard of one for something like transformers. so, what do people think? i dont think anybody is going to make a list of all the g1 transformers, but a list of the most popular/ well known g1 characters would be interesting.

here is my list, in order (so the guys at the bottom of the "bottom tier" section are lower down than the guys at the top of the "bottom tier" section). and to help keep it getting too out of control, ill say nobody above jetfires size. so a huge normal sized transformer, no trypticon or unicon, and no combiners or omega supreme.



top tier

optimus prime
megatron
shockwave


middle tier

grimlock
starscream
soundwave
jazz
prowl
laserbeak
ironhide
brawn
ravage


bottom tier

powerglide
rumble
frenzy
bumblebee


its a short list, and i only included pre movie characters, but im in a hurry. anyone got any disputes/additions?

Better add these guys to the top tier:

Thunderwing
Sixshot
Straxus
Ultra Magnus
Sentinel Prime


You could potentially add Grimlock to the top tier if you include his post-Actionmaster incarnations.

Ok Grimlock is either at the top of the 2nd tier or bottom of top tier and Sixshot should be with him. Ultra Magnus and Thunderwing top tier but still near bottom, below shockwave. And please put Prowl above Jazz and possibly soundwave as well. I'm pretty sure Brawn could take laserbeak as well.

i think jazz and prowl are nearly interchangeable. grimlock should be at the top of the middle tier, shockwave is top tier, and watching a fight with all 5 dinobots against him shows grimlock isnt in his league. but grimlock could still take on pretty well anyone who isnt top tier.

laserbeak was a hard one, i have been watching alot of eps keeping track of how many fights everyone wins, and against who, and laserbeak has some impressive victories, including shooting starscream out of the sky and taking him back to megatron (prime problem), taking out prime himself, without the element of surprise (prime problem) and takikng on both hound and cliffjumper at the same time, up until they were rescued. and then other times hes completely useless in a fight. so hes a weird one to classify. i had trouble with magnus, i think he and grimlock are very close, so i didnt want to put him in a completly different class, but i also didnt want him being too far below prime.

so whatever ideas anyone has feel free to post an updated and corrected version of my list.

If it were just the original season 1 cartoon cast, I would have it like this:

Sometimes the 'lower' ones have a key advantage over 'higher' ones. It's not so straightforward.
