I think this one's pretty tough...

Sonic may have speed, but Mario has way more strength. And Mario's about two feet taller than Sonic (Sega said Sonic is about 3'3", Nintendo said Mario is 5') meaning Mario would be able to hold his ground easier, as Sonic wouldn't be able to push him back easily. (Unless Sonic has unheard-of muscle mass)

Mario wins this one easily. Let's-a Go!

im going with mario. sonic is faster, but thats about it. mario is an up close brawler, if smash bros is anything to go by. he has alot of aerial skill, meaning he can probably avoid some of sonics dash type attacks and possibly counter them. if there are any platforms or objects to jump on mario should be nearly untouchable. hes got excellent traction and he can change his momentum in mid air. he also has super human strength, as shown in a few of his games, so im giving it to mario.

granted i dont know a whole lot about sonic, but if its in an open environment that allows him to use his speed, then in the interest of a fair fight there should be platforms to allow mario to use his jumping ability. and if thats the case i dont see how sonic could ground mario in order to do any real damage.

Sonic. I don't think that Mario wouldn't feel it when Sonic runs on him with x km/h-s

Even if that "-s" meant anything, Mario still has much more weight and muscle-mass than Sonic, not to mention, he's been shown to be just as fast as Sonic.

Seriously, think about it. Compare a speed run for, say, Super Mario World, and any one of the Sonic games. If you compare the two, Sonic isn't all that much faster than Mario.

I think Sonic can win this one.

His speed is an advantadge. Running faster than the speed of sound, I think he's faster than Mario...

Now, I don't know much about Sonic, but I hear he can transform into some kind of "Super Sonic".

Since I believe Sonic can beat Mario as he is, transforming into this Super Sonic would surely give the hedgehog the victory.

Being a Sonic-games-fan I think Sonic's the obvious winner ^^
His speed is fast enough to be able to avoid just about anything Mario can throw at him, and I've seen him take a lot more damage than mario, and just keep going.

Are power-ups allowed btw?

If they are, then Mario grabs a super star from Super Paper Mario and squahes Sonic flat!
Pure pixelated goodness!!

If sonic can hold on to at least one ring Sonic's got it in the bag.

If mario has any of his power ups I think the plumer would take it.

head to head with no power ups or rings I'd have to say it's a case of who hits who first.

Sonic takes it. It's more than just speed (although Sonic does have that), it's also the fact that Sonic can plow through opponents without any real effort. Mario even has to give a bob-omb a little fight, or ground-pound a koopa troopa. His reaction time would take a serious toll against Sonic.

Since when? Any time I hit a Badnik head-on, I lost all my rings. You have to jump on their heads to do any real damage. Oddly enough, that's also what Mario does...

 Have you tried holding the D-pad down, tapping a jump button a few times then release the D-pad... or just pressing down after running pretty fast? Sonic's spin dash was his defining separation from Mario type attacks.
/:) Perhaps it wasn't that prevalent in the 1st Sonic game.

Here's my rundown...

Super Mario Bro's Mario v.s. Sonic 1's Sonic

Mario's fire ball may tell the tale here; Sonic's rings will prove hard to keep hold of... Mario wins.

SMB 2's Mario v.s. Sonic 2's Sonic

Mario looses his fire for a little mobility; Sonic gains more control over his dash, and a few items just seal the deal.

SMB 3's Mario v.s. Sonic 3's Sonic

This is were the real battle ensues. Mario has more power ups then ever and can store a spare item; Sonic has an air spin that renders him momentarily impervious, in addition to added attacks based on his elemental shields. This match may be too close to call.

note: I luv both these games...

Mario 3D v.s. Sonic 3D

Mario can through a punch and can take more hits, but is other wise a 3D version of his SMB 2 self with a few power up hats; Sonic still has that air spin and now an air dash even with out a shield. I think, while I like metal Mario a ton, I gotta give it to Sonic.

Mario fighter v.s. Sonic fighter

SSBM Mario is Nintendo's mascot Ryu as a plummer; Sonic is no Blanka, not even a Dan... Mario pulls a smash KO finish for a flawless victory

Mario racer v.s. Sonic racer

The plummer Karts a way more fun but Sonic... just Sonic.

Mario non video game v.s. Sonic non video game

Mario has a movie, some cartoons, a cereal but doesn't show him being able to actually beat down the speedy hedgehog; Sonic has a few comics, and cartoons that make him a cross between the flash and the roadrunner. Despite the movie deal, Mario seems to be Wiley E. Coyote.

I've left out Mario's star item, Sonic's invincibility box, and super sonic all together. Given how most of Sonic's boss fights work, a closed platform area shouldn't hurt the blue guy's performance.

Sonic may be pimped out by the plummer in the gaming franchise now, but Mario just does not stand up in a media represented fight.

:-? Who has the stronger villains?

Mario kills Sonic with a piece of heavy pipe.
