Since when? Any time I hit a Badnik head-on, I lost all my rings. You have to jump on their heads to do any real damage. Oddly enough, that's also what Mario does...

Have you tried holding the D-pad down, tapping a jump button a few times then release the D-pad... or just pressing down after running pretty fast? Sonic's spin dash was his defining separation from Mario type attacks.

Perhaps it wasn't that prevalent in the 1st Sonic game.
Here's my rundown...
Super Mario Bro's Mario v.s. Sonic 1's SonicMario's fire ball may tell the tale here; Sonic's rings will prove hard to keep hold of... Mario wins.
SMB 2's Mario v.s. Sonic 2's SonicMario looses his fire for a little mobility; Sonic gains more control over his dash, and a few items just seal the deal.
SMB 3's Mario v.s. Sonic 3's SonicThis is were the real battle ensues. Mario has more power ups then ever and can store a spare item; Sonic has an air spin that renders him momentarily impervious, in addition to added attacks based on his elemental shields. This match may be too close to call.
note: I luv both these games...
Mario 3D v.s. Sonic 3DMario can through a punch and can take more hits, but is other wise a 3D version of his SMB 2 self with a few power up hats; Sonic still has that air spin and now an air dash even with out a shield. I think, while I like metal Mario a ton, I gotta give it to Sonic.
Mario fighter v.s. Sonic fighterSSBM Mario is Nintendo's mascot Ryu as a plummer; Sonic is no Blanka, not even a Dan... Mario pulls a smash KO finish for a flawless victory
Mario racer v.s. Sonic racerThe plummer Karts a way more fun but Sonic... just Sonic.
Mario non video game v.s. Sonic non video gameMario has a movie, some cartoons, a cereal but doesn't show him being able to actually beat down the speedy hedgehog; Sonic has a few comics, and cartoons that make him a cross between the flash and the roadrunner. Despite the movie deal, Mario seems to be Wiley E. Coyote.
I've left out Mario's star item, Sonic's invincibility box, and super sonic all together. Given how most of Sonic's boss fights work, a closed platform area shouldn't hurt the blue guy's performance.
Sonic may be pimped out by the plummer in the gaming franchise now, but Mario just does not stand up in a media represented fight.

Who has the stronger villains?
