Sure they had about 700 Thespians, 400 Thebans, and over 3,000 more Peloponnesians. But I think the poll said the SPARTANS. Besides, the Thebans surrendered, and the remaining Peloponnesians were all killed by the Persians at Mt. Anopaea. The Thespians were the only ones who actually fought with the Spartans. However, I will admit that the Thespians are grossly overlooked.
If Spartan spears could pierce todays conventional armor at over 50 ft and bronze shields could take armor piercing anti-tank fire power, I'ld consider Waspinator at a disadvantage.
Waspinator may not be the Strongest of Beastwars cast but between flight and firepower, he'ld fair better than Dinobot or Blackarachnia and do more than blot out the sky with his
rocket launcher.
Both Dinobot or Blackarachnia could do better than Waspinator. He can fly, so what, he's an idiot. Dinobot is strong enough to take Megatron in melee combat, and smart enough to outwit six Preds by himself. Blackarachnia has machine guns. Besides, Waspinator couldn't even outthink '07 Skorponok.
He can fly so he has range. Cybertronian rocket launcher easily penetrates archaic bronze shields, easier than BA machineguns that have been useless on maximals in the series. As the series shows he really not that dumb. Sure if he walks into the center of them and then picks a fight, he'ld be in trouble, but If he's fighting from the start then he fires on sight, and he has a range that exceed non assisted human eyesight.
Dinobot, is a great melee fighter, and probably the best combat strategist in BW too. BW cast wasn't incredibly strong. But if a spear can hurt waspinator at 50 yards then a spear can hurt Dinobot at under 20 yards. Dinobot can't afford to mow down 300 Spartan shields with his energon consuming eye beams and his preference for melee is a liability against Leonidas and his men. Frankly the better Dinobot can handle a close fight with the Spartans the more plausible Waspinator's victory at range becomes.
Black Arachnia is in a similar conundrum. Agile, stealthy, and smarter than Dinobot, her range combat is effective machinegun cover fire, strong webing, and a cross bow. The machine gun wasn't that effective in actual combat with Maximals or Predacons. BA isn't much stronger than Waspinator and possibly less durable. If She can evade spears on land, the ever nimble waspinator can evade them easier from the air.
If the 300 are in the narrow pass for some form of strategy they become sitting ducks for the Cybertronian ballistics.

Not that I doubt it, just then if two former Preds could individually accomplish this as melee specialists, I'ld like to think an aerial assault would prove even more effective. Also compared to the machinegun fire of BA being deadly to Predacons I think the spears were over rated.

but hed probably lose simply because he is waspinator and hed be overjoyed about taking out a small group of spartans and completely take his eye off the rest.
highly plausible if he doesn't know how many he is fighting and flys in low after devastating a few
If it is a simple as Megatron saying "waspinator go destroy the Spartan. And don't come back until 3oo of those dirty hairless apes are deactivated!" I think he might count the bodies...
or If Waspinator was worshiped like the Persian king was as a god but decided to take the fight personally to them after they defeated XX amount of his soldiers with no casualties to them self...
"Wazzzpinator make exzzzample of 300 Zzzpartanzzz!"
Either case the Spartans would have a hard time hitting Waspinator at range.
