We know that when you hit the speed of light, time slows down, so obviously the DeLorean passed the speed of light, by opening a wormhole that allowed them to pierce the veil of time and travel however they please.
Thanks, you stole my post. But seriously, I agree with Senor Hugo.
Two words: Flux Capacitor. 88 MPH is hardly the speed of light, it was the flux capacitor that made time travel possible.
Yes, 88mph is hardly the speed of light.
However, 88mph was only a requirement in order for the Flux Capacitor to work.
Once it hits 88mph the flux capacitor along with help from whichever radioactive substance they needed, plutonium or something, I forget, to generate the necessary 1.21 gigawatts for time travel to be possible.
What this, in totally armchair theory, does, is allow the Flux Capacitor to turn the stainless steel of the DeLorean into a giant superconductor.
This causes a door in the fabric of space/time to open, that which the DeLorean can travel through, and then go to any point in time.
Causing a door such as this to open, is only possible through one way. Speed, the Flash has been able to travel into the future, and I believe back, due to his speed and the connection to the Speed Force.
Wormholes, in Stargate, due to a solar-flare hitting at just the right time in the wormholes travel, causes SG-1 to travel to the past, then again to the future.
Then in numerous Star Trek episodes, and movies, travel through time has happened.
Now, this is essentially what the DeLorean/Flux Capacitor does. It opens up a wormhole, which could allow the DeLorean to travel through space in fractions of the time that it would take current technology, in order to travel that distance in time like that, you'd be going much, much, much faster than the speed of light. A wormhole causes this to happen, the only difference would be, that instead of traveling to a different place, the DeLorean is traveling to a different point in time, most likely due to the supercharged stainless steel of the DeLorean itself. Which could disrupt the wormhole enough for time travel to be possible.
