What are your top five worst toys of 2017?

Here are mine. I chose to make it only about new moulds that came out this year along with only toys I bought so that I truly knew if I did not like them or not. Of course you can do as you wish let's just have fun.

5. Legends God bomber and Magnus prime: combined they are fine, but individually I think these are the ribeyes at this point to be most this year. Both have their own faults. God bomber does not stay well together in Altamonte and pieces will fall after and conversion, it is very annoying. I also do not know what Takara could not paint his face and there are issues with his shoulder canon being very loose when positioning or hooking on in different modes. My issue with the prime figure is that it has the most asinine design decisions I have ever seen for this line. The heel spurs close if the toy starts falling backwards, this is playing dumb. I also hate the feed to sign and I have no clue why it wouldn't of this when it doesn't even look show accurate. It looks like ass. once again, thank God that these two combine into what I think is a pretty good looking design. It definitely helps me not regret my purchase.

4. TLK Barricade: I already wrote a whole review As to how this toy blows. Overly simplistic a ton of back cable and very short. I do not feel this is a worthwhile. Especially one bath at full price. The fact that Hasbro rights premier addition on the box is just plain Insulting. This toy definitely makes me understand why some collectors avoid movie toys like the plague.

3. Crash combiner sky hammer: I am all for toys aim the kids, that's what toys are for. But this one didn't even work with it's gimmick. The alt mode on one of them won't even hold together. I also find a toy overpricedfor how simple it is.

2. TLK Steelbane: it isn't just the floppiness that is an issue. It is also the fact that it looks pretty bad in both modes. I hate seeing all the robots junk like his feet in dragon mode along with how the tail connects. Plus there is the really loose and will advise connection for how the chest forms in robot mode. He also ends up looking very small and it's hard to keep a decent pose. Plus there is that have been to Chester just looks odd.

1. RID Activator Bumblebee: easily the worst price/play value ratio I have ever seen. A very cheap feeling toy that does very little for the price of a Voyager. I get that these are for kids but I also feel parents are being very much ripped off here as are the kids.

Weapon: Twin Swords
5) TLK Hound. I really thought I was going to like this one but he's just a big fat disappointment. His weapons are so boring compared to what he got with the AOE version and his feet are terrible. I find that I can't even pose this one without him falling over due to his terrible feet.

4) TLK Berserker. Another one I thought I was going to like but I just can't. I can't transform this guy without panels popping off and when trying to pose him his arm panels fall off 9/10ths of the time. And unlike Hound who kinda makes up for a lackluster bot mode with a cool vehicle mode Berserkers is just a mess. It's so small and panel heavy it just never looks good.

3) TLK Barricade. Pretty much everything you said already. Nothing new to add.

2) TLK Skullitron. Once again same as what you said with Steelbane but I actually wish I had gotten Steelbane instead because he has a much nicer head sculpt. The decaying face of Skullitron is just a muddy mess that doesn't work as a deluxe size. Decent concept but terrible execution.

1) TLK Dragonstorm. God I hate this thing. Only leader I regret getting (and I own every single leader figure to come out since thrilling 30). Like Skullitron his concept is incredibly cool, two badass knights that combine together into a huge 3 headed dragon, that should make toy of the year! But it falls so incredibly short. The dragon mode is such a horrible mismatch of random paint colors and then flat grey unpainted plastic topped off with burned macaroni and cheese colored dragon heads. But I feel that even with a better paint job the dragon mode was always doomed due to the dumb decision to make the front legs significantly shorter than the back so it always looks like he's bowing. Bowing is not intimidating. And don't even get me started on the tail.

Now onto the bot modes the only thing that could save this figure and it fails here as well. They're both horribly light and hollow and usually hollowness doesn't bother me but when it's easily covered up but isn't it becomes an issue. Just look at the back of Stormreign. They didn't even try. All they had to do was add a swivel so the back could clamshell up and it would've been significantly better. Dragonicus is the only good thing about this set and even he is slightly ruined by the dragon heads being shoved into his forearms. I will give credit where credit is due though the combination transformation is quite cool and the individual knight head sculpts are beautiful but everything else is so bad.

Now this may come across as biased since all the figures are from the last knight but these are just the figures that I find to be the worst of what I bought this year. And I bought a lot of figures this year. I completed my Combiner Wars collection, purchased nearly every Takara legends figure and whatever Titans return figures I didn't get from Takara I bought from Hasbro, and put a pretty good dent in my Masterpiece collection but The Last Knight figures were the most disappointing of the entire lot.

This is tough because I don't buy anything I don't have to have and I return anything that has a problem. That leaves me with only one massive number one:

TR Perceptor

I had to return him right away and that is so disappointing because this was supposed to replace my childhood toy perfectly. However his head joint was so tight only his tiny head would fit, no other heads fit my perceptor (the only one I ever came across, too). I also noticed the TM legs did not have the added plastic to fill in the gap in the center of the head. That was unacceptable. The final nail in the coffin was the tiny piece of plastic that connects the microscope assembly to the slider arm. That has no chance at any longevity under normal play activity.

TR Perceptor is hands down my worst toy for 2017. So disappointing.

My 2016 resolution was to stop purchasing every transformer released and focus only on the one I would be sure to like.
So it restrains a lot the list of worst TF I can get. (as well as the famous buyer remorse and stuff).

But I still made some mistakes.

- TR Kup
Poor plastic, almost porous. It looks like a 3D printed toy, not in par with the rest of TR line.
Terrible head. Really I have no idea of what they tried with this head and smirk.

- TR Nightbat.
Not sure if purchased in 2016 or 2017, but it's so bad that he deserves to be here. Terrible colors, weird head mode, bad vehicule which all three modes are terrible.

- Platinium Edition Snarl.
2015 toy, but purchased this year.
Sold back three weeks after. Probably my worst purchase ever.
I wanted a new version of my Childhood Snarl and thought this one with the new head could be the one.
Big error: fiddly, wiggly, hollow, kibble everywhere. The chrome looks like it will break at every transformation and mades the transformation difficult. The arm articulation/pose is stupid.
I hope Potp's Snarl will be better.

I bought a ton in 2017, seeing as I just started collecting in November to early December timeframe, but for me the worst purchases have been: (note that I doubt many of these were actually released in 2017)

-TLK Dragonstorm, not sure I could say why any better than steals_your_goats did. I am really close to tossing him in the trash to free up display space.

-TFC Toys - OS-02 Detective - This is a third party hound that is not cheap, but boy does it feel cheap. The windshield fell out during shipping and now I can't get it to stay in, the joints are all fairly loose so posing is pretty much out beyond just a straight upright standing position.

PERFECT EFFECT - PE-DX08 - ORIGIN LEONIDAS - Beautiful toy when in robot mode, node a fan of the beast mode. My biggest complaint is that he is so floppy with horrible joints that I had no choice but to use a stand to hold him up.

MP-34 Cheetus (Beast Wars) - I am finding the transformation to be really clunky and again a figure plagued by some poor joint design. Looks good enough as a figure in both modes but the quality could have been much better as a master piece toy.

Weapon: Electro-Sword
So, I will preface by saying I am a CHUG variation only collector. So 2017 was pretty much all Titans Return for me. A lot of great toys came out of it. Heck, I think the ones I mention on this are actually great toys, but with glaring QC issues. I am only including ones I remember buying in 2017

5. Highbrow. Otherwise known as super-floppy-neck bobblehead man.

4. Six Shot. 2 big faults in an otherwise splendid figure. 1. why bother with the ankle tilts if they only have 2 positions, straight up and ridiculously twisted ankle. 2. Super loose knees. This is a well documented issue for this figure

3. Blaster & Soundwave. While they are great figures, they fail because of scale. They are too large to display along with the other CHUG figures they typically associate with. And, the whole missed opportunity with giving us obvious repaints/retools for cassettes that go with them.

2. Broadside. So close to an amazing toy, but such fail on the Jet mode. I have done the fan mod of flipping the foot wings upside down, which helps some. It just seems they could have done even a little better with that mode.

1. Tie... Chaos on Velocitron and Ramhorn. Wait why? Especially Ramhorn? Well, these were the figures with the most glaringly horrible distribution I have seen in a long time as a collector. I had to find Ramhorn at an Aldi of all places, months after his alleged release. And to get Chaos on Velocitron, I had to enlist the help of a fellow forum member to buy it in Canada and ship it to me (thanks William!). I think they are fantastic toys, but Hasbro made a huge misstep with distribution and selection process here.

Aside from 1. and 2., I don't know that the order is terribly relevant in my list. Pretty much 3-5 could interchange.

I agree, especally when we are still stuck using FOC or G1 Soundwave for our classics scale collection. I do have 2 questions though.

1. Why arent we seeing this kind of displeasure with the new Leader POTP mold? It's a CHUG optimus that towers everyone around, even Jetfire, why arent people upset by that and where do people place him?
2. With Soudwave and Blaster being bigger than they should be (MP scaled), then so are their casettes. Yet people didnt mind that part. If they were to make CHUG casette bots down the line, shouldnt they be much smaler than the ones we got in TR?

2. Broadside. So close to an amazing toy, but such fail on the Jet mode. I have done the fan mod of flipping the foot wings upside down, which helps some. It just seems they could have done even a little better with that mode.

Agreed! He is SO close to being great since I truly find his robot and carrier mode to be as good as imaginable (in looks). So much so that I actually really like this toy (AND his repaint Tidal Wave) despite only using 2 of his modes (similarly to how I love TR Laser Prime yet totally igore the plane mode).

ExciKaiser wrote:- Platinium Edition Snarl.

This is the part that really kills it. I dont mind the rest too much since its an original take and the deco is cool and I transformed it a bunch oftimes without it breaking. (Platinum Slug's tail broke though). But the arms are really dumb. I cant believe we cant get better aticulation than that in this day and age.

I don't know why, but I like Blaster as a Leader. Maybe it's just because the toy (from what I've seen) is a really good one, and also his G1 toy was hueg so there's an element of homage to that?

POTP Optimus, though...Yeesh. I honestly don't like the evolution gimmick, or more specifically the implementation of it. See, if the cab turned into a regular Optimus Prime and the trailer combined to give him a "super mode" ala Armada or RID or whatever I'd be down for that. Super modes rock. As is, we have a somewhat iffy looking Orion Pax who's about the size of Classics Prime, with a really terrible vehicle mode that combines with a shonky trailer into a regular boring ol' Optimus Prime, except too big and not very good. So not only have we been robbed of a good CHUG Optimus, we've been robbed of a good Super Mode Optimus.

Anyway, on topic, I can only really think of two toys that even approached "worst" and they were more underwhelming than bad.

Skullcruncher: He's underpainted and he has hollow legs. That aside? I dig him.

TLK Barricade: His backpack is a bit annoying and he's too short, but he's OK.

I don't care blaster at all, I've no attachment to him, (so my answer probbly worth nothing) but I think you answered this question by yourself : There's no other Blaster which fits as Chug, contrary to Optimus, which got ton of versions including the Classics one which is apparently still the Chug Optimus for most of people, so we can assume a new version of Optimus which fits nowhere.

While he isn't the classic radio version of blaster, the scale of Ghetto Blaster from KFC Toys isn't bad. Still big, but not giant like G1 Blaster or the newer version of Blaster.

I'll agree as far as Blaster that I'm still using the FOC version (and the data discs of his cassettes), but I think a lot of people miss out on a pretty obvious and awesome Soundwave to use. The Music Label one is great. (Mind you, he's probably a bit harder to track down these days...)

Looking at that image, I see that I need to update it now that I have all three Insecticons on that shelf, too... but it's good enough to show off how Soundwave looks.

Yeah ExciKaiser hit the nail on the head for me. I literally have one of every scale of Optimus. Have 3 Hot Rods now... Rodimus is a bonus figure far as I am concerned. Optimal Optimus should be big.

But Blaster and Soundwave. I love the figures. But I really can only display them along side CW Megs and Seekers. Otherwise they need to be relegated to a separate shelf. That said... I am in the process of slowly repainting the spare Frumble I found at Kroger (grocery chain) into Blue Guy. So really the only ones missing in my collection are steeljaw and ratbat from the "original" cassettes.

For blaster and soundwave I ask myself, would a slightly smaller parts count and voyager scale make them better or worse figures. I think yes. Instead of a base mode you could have had that lamppost mode as a 3rd mode for both. Which would have meant maybe moving galvatron up a scale, which I would be ok with. Or having the horrorcons in leader scale.

Talking about Blaster and how important it seems to have it displayed with in chug collection, nobody is using this one ?

Or not G1 enough ?

On my side I hesitate to get him, I like the mold (already have soundwave) and like these colors..

I use Label Blaster. I think the laptop mode is a suitible evolution, even if it's not ideal. He can even hold tapes (in robot mode).

I used to use Label Soundwave, but he's always been pretty small. I broke down and got FoC Soundy and he's okay.

Top 5 worse figures of what I have bought in 2017:

1.TR/CW? Stripes,
I bought a three figure set with wheelie and rewind so I ended up with this junk. On the bright side I was going to get a takara legends Ravage so it saved me money.
The figure itself is awful, transforming it crumples or damages the stickers. The best use for it so far has been for a titan to hold in space suppository mode or having as a decrepid dinosaur mistransforation.

I hopefully don't tend to buy bad transformers, I'm over buying a character for the character despite it being a bad toy when there is so many good toys out there over all the ranges available. So all the others just fall into personal disappointments for the most part.

2.CW hound
An awful block that has no jeep like qualities or even something that looks like a vehicle. It has wheels so I know it is a 'vehicle' and it's not going for a cybertronian look. In robot mode the lack of color or character makes it seem like a generic robot, though the robot mode really isnt that bad, the lack of definition makes sure it is never displayed and hidden away. Limb mode...I like my combiners limbs to look like they are composed of vehicles so to me it even fails on that level. it can't even be used effectively as a doorstop.

3.TR Quickswitch,
Wobbly knee syndrome. As much as I was disappointed in the TR sixshots figure failing to be better than the G1 toy, it's probably fair to say the TR sixshot figure is better than the G1 quickswitch figure so I'm not sure I can complain about him being a repaint rather than him having his own modes/figure. It is a figure I have to mistransform to give him his own look but doing so has to remain behind others to hide his feet. Standing taller and the color scheme helps him to be less of an instant why is sixshot in funny colors and next to the autobots look.

4.TR/Legends Sharkticon. I've got the legends and hasbro versions. From the hasbro version that is mistransformed in its packaging giving the appearance of robot mode being bigger than it is. I use the same mistransformation to display him on the shelves standing behind other figures to hide the feet. Not a bad figure by any means but just waaaay too small.

5.Any TR Powermaster prime, the G1 toy just beats this thing hands down. The Hasbro TR release actually has feet compared to the legends issue. The legends issue has more defined arms but the trailer kibble doesnt store nicely. For the price point of the figures it's better to get the encore G1 set and have Ginrai and working power master option. Even with all the options out there to give the figure a Ginrai or improvements, it no where nears the G1 toy despite the money I have chucked at this figure

You're entitled to your own opinions, of course, but I couldn’t disagree more, and this is probably my top figure of last year. Yeah, he needed a little help (thanks, Perfect Effect!) but even before I got his upgrades in to give him a transforming cab and make him a Powermaster again, I thought he was pretty kick-arse.

As far as the trailer kibble on the arms, yes it doesn't fold completely flat. But if it did, it would bump into the back of the upper arms if you tried to straighten up his arms completely. Frankly, I will take what Takara did over Hasbro's having those panels come down behind the hands. I think it looks better, and it allowed for wrist articulation, which is always a plus in larger classes of figures.

As for the feet... Yes, the Hasbro ones are objectively more stable, but I don't get the hate for the Takara ones. Maybe I got lucky in that I am able to get mine to stand in decent poses? Or is everyone else just not patient enough? I don't know... And as far as the aesthetics of the feet... You'very seen the G1 figure, yes?

Image

Everyone praises Takara (pre-Power of the Primes) for being more G1... except this one time. Then everyone is all, "OMG, the feet! Why did they do that?"

Also, Takara's feet make for a better looking truck mode, and allow for combination with Godbomber. Yes, please.

Everyone praises Takara (pre-Power of the Primes) for being more G1... except this one time. Then everyone is all, "OMG, the feet! Why did they do that?"

I dont understand. I am looking at the very picture you posted and the feet look nothing alike. In G1, the entire trailer makes up the foot. Its all one piece touching the ground. Same as in the cartoon. It gives him a great solid appearance. The Legends version seperates the toes portion and makes that become the feet, making them look like stilts and turning the trailer into bell bottoms. That looks terrible and is not in any way representative of any G1 representation of Super Jinrai.

Hasbro giving him longer feet which have a similar length to the trailer keeps the original idea while modernizing it (along with everything else in their version). So yeah, Takara totally botched that one and hasnt in any way made it more accurate than Hasbro as far as the feet are concerned.

Also, Takara's feet make for a better looking truck mode, and allow for combination with Godbomber. Yes, please.

I went for the Legends God Ginrai set so I have the Takara version with improved stability over the initial takara release, plus the cthru cab windows. The perfect effect kit is in deluxe robot mode stood in front of him to hide the legs, with the PE power master stood on god bomber (no foot holes to be able to use titan master pegs). Maybe if the Takaras hanging wheels had some kind of step to rotate them, it might have offered more of a g1 look/stability and complimented the way the (lack of) feet look (I'm okay with wheels being hidden or not on certain figures).

The old toy is a bit of a brick, but a stable brick & a hefty one with the weight of the encore C-310 die cast metal cab. If I could change anything on it, it would be arm joints (at least it has molded joint details) and move the hand sliders to under the arms. I can live without knee joints when the new figure looks like it's wearing oversized wellies when posing (not to mention the bow legged look with lack of ankle tilt).
The stickers, chrome thighs, metal, cab robot mode and that I enjoy the base, truck and robot modes more than the new version and it isn't a pain to transform (to truck mode and god Ginrai, his bits stay where they should/on)) It could be a bit of nostalgia but if the newer version just had more oomph so that he was instant awe factor I would hope for in a new power master prime (& a marvel comics head, with alternate expressions but hey :P).
-on a side note really impressed by the way the g1 versions shoulder cannons look on the new figure even if the grays don't match (which is another problem I have with the new version in the light gray used, it just isn't Prime enough).

5) TR SOUNDWAVE
i love me some Soundwave. i love his aloofness, his skills, his atitude based on the mad power to back it up (haha Airachnid!), his looks from G1 to RID to the movies to RID15. Most of all i love the respect he gets, even from Megatron. I dig his "pocket army". He was the first large sized G1 i ever got back in the day.
Love.
But this....
my wife bought it for me, so i had do everything i could do to make it lovable.
the lack of paint or stickers made me Toyhax the Scheisse out of it.
had to get some Shapeways to fill out that idiot Blaster rifle.
AND AFTER ALL THAT... I still gotta pose him separately, because he's too frakkin big!

4) TR MINDWIPE
**sigh**
Mindwipe...
i love bats.
i love homages.
But couldn't HASTAK see that he was garbage before?
and now he's just garbage ade more poseable?
Atleast the others were only wobbly. i can fix wobbly.
Can't fix FUGLY.
and i love him as a concept. Psychologist, Occultist, Bat, cool.

3) RID15 SHOCKADO
if you cant see the roblem...
i can't help you.
so terrible, i couldn't een return it!

2) TR HEADMASTER (TITANMASTER) VEHICLES
Love having new faces to add to repaints!
I'm okay with little tiny dudes.
But the BULLSCRAP vehicles... why waste the plastic?
We collectors already dance with the "carbon-footprint" devil by the pale moonlight.
there s no call for this much landfill!

1) TLK ALMOST EVERYTHING!
Now, I've thought often about how i gratefully choked down yet another Mike Bay slaughter of another production that according to the original story, script, art, producrs, crew, actors and so on... was going to be fantastic. WHY DO WE ALLOW IT!

And I'd do it all again to get the rare cosmic jewel that is Voyager MEGATRON. i sorta like the dragons ad Barricade.
But the rest?
FRAK ALL THAT HORRIFIC SCRAP!
DAMN IT ALL TO THE PIT!

Or not G1 enough ?

On my side I hesitate to get him, I like the mold (already have soundwave) and like these colors..

Honestly, I would stick with the FoC (I believe it's FoC) version over this.

i concur!
FOC for Blaster

as for Soundwave...
i like FOC
or the stealth fighter
or the stealth drone
or even the RID25 armored truck.

Legends Ginrai's feet do look more like the original toy's feet (just separate from the trailer) than TR PMOP's feet (which are unmistakeably Ultra Magnus feet), with how they're tall and don't protrude forward of the leg very far, plus their shape. Although thanks to the detail resembling the original PMOP toy's feet on the trailer back pieces of TR PMOP, this basically means that Legends Ginrai has PMOP feet twice over.

I personally headcanon TR Soundwave and Blaster as larger upgrade bodies of the two to account for how big they are compared to their fellows and their turning into bulkier stereos, and I really wish Soundwave wasn't so pricy on eBay.

Will, you might want to go proofread your post - autocorrect did a number on it.

Let's see...
1. TLK TURBO CHANGER DRAGONSTORM.
Because this shelfwarming plastic-wasting piece of smeg just sat and sat and sat and hogged space and thereby kept any of my local Targets from getting later-wave TR Leader Class figures in.
2. TR Quickswitch. Probably the most painful shoehorning of the entire line. Why couldn't they have done Greatshot.. Even with just different stickers and colors from Sixshot, that would have been a much closer match because of the tiny little fact that Sixshot and Greatshot actually share a mold.
3. TLK Deluxe Barricade. Did the pain caused by AoE Drift and Bee's designs make some people at HasTak forget how to handle deluxe Earth-mode Bayformers?
4. Early Deluxe TLK Bumblebee. With him having basically reverted to his old design to keep the toy designers from murdering the art department in their sleep, reusing the DotM Deluxe Bee mold would have been better than reusing the early AoE Deluxe Bumblebee mold.
5. TR Ultra Magnus and Scorponok.. These headmasters just seem laughably pointless to me.
