Well...three out of four of them are. The Zelda video was...not well regarded, to say the least. Arin has even admitted on Game Grumps that he may have been too harsh. (And, while playing Ocarina of Time, saying that Dan will still love it)
I remember being right there with him on most of the OoT critiques. It did get a little dark though.

I'm actually having a hard time motivating myself to play OoT. It's just feeling a little too closed/small/linear for my tastes. It's like I want that gameplay, but in a different package. Kingdoms of Amalur has been filling in that need very well lately.

I picked up Ocarina of Time 3D last night. It's not only sating my nostalgia craving quite nicely, but the game is just beautiful. It's not exactly PS4/XBone quality graphics, but the improvements over the N64 version are immediately noticeable.

It really is nice. I got it initially when I picked up that Ocarina of Time special edition 3DS years back, played it a little more when the 3DS XL came out, and actually started all the way over when I got the *new* 3DS XL. Running that game in full 3D and still being able to use gyro controls is pretty effing sweet.

Oh yeah, the porting is amazing. They did a great job of preserving the integrity of the original and tossing in just the right amount of modern touches. If I didn't know any better, I'd say it's always been a 3DS game.

Good stuff. I'll be out of town next week and will be diving back in or playing Mass Attack :BANG_HEAD:

Hey Cary, I was curious as to how you dealt with collectables. With Luigi's Mansion DS I was at first really into them. I had to get all the gems. But in the end, they dont do too much and now that I have all the upgrades for my vacuum, exploring locations for more wealth is useless, so I just go about the main quest without looking arond as much as before. Also many of those gems are just so damn random I have to look up guides online and I dont really feel like doing that for a cute nintendo game like this (its not like Metal Gear 3 where I badly needed a guide).

I'm old school, so I'm sick for collectibles. I have to make myself stop now a days just because the time invested rarely is worth the payout.

So it depends on how hard they are to find vs how fun they are to find vs what do I get for finding them all.

My gamer history is built on a foundation of in-game collectibles; so yeah, if there is a stat/collectible tracker somewhere and I can fill it up, you can bet I'm going try.

Emulation is quite nice (and the Retron5 is a glorified emulator), but I do have old NES, Genesis, Game Boy/Advance (and hopefully some SNES carts) still and I feel bad for not using them and buying the Virtual Console versions

I dunno, NX is on the horizon, nothing happening right now for me in the world of Transformers.. I just don't know what to do. It's yard sale season, and I think I'm gonna have a lot more room for stuff and things.

What's Wrong with the Kids and the Problem with Modern Gaming

Postby no-one » Mon Jun 20, 2016 3:30 pm

So here is a little tale:

I was playing Rogue Galaxy the other night and our internet dropped. I didn't notice because I was playing a "retro" game. The only reason I knew there was an issue is that my wife put her laptop down and asked if the internet was down and about that time my 20 year old brother-in-law (who is temporarily staying with us) walked out of the guest room with a sour look on his face. He was playing some game is either online only or he doesn't realize single player exist. It was as if without the internet video games don't work.

So they both belly-ached a bit and jumped on their phones. I kept merrily playing my game and let them stew for about 5 minutes or so until I felt comfortable pausing/saving my game. I got up, power cycled both the router and modem then sat back down and un-paused my game. After about a minute I looked at them and said "you're welcome".

My bro-in-law looked at me like I was a **** wizard and asked "what did you do?"

I'll repeat; what is wrong with kids and the games they play? :-?

The Ooooh Shiny Gamer - Gone Home

Postby no-one » Mon Jun 20, 2016 3:41 pm

It's that time again when I play yet another game without finishing any of my other games. Bah! I'm a PS+ member so that doesn't help my easily distracted issues any.

So there is a game that I've wanted to play since I've heard about it. I'm kind of a cheap ass and most indie games either become one of the "free" PS+ games are get severe discounts. Guess what I got this month:

Image

Paint me excited!

If you don't know anything about this game, then stay that way, go find a copy for your gaming system of choice and play it. If you want to know more then I'll give you just a bit more. It's what the kids would "a walking simulator" (goddammit CoD :-x ). Think MYST if you're old enough. All I will tell you is that you explore a house and there is a mystery to be solved. I finished it about 5 hours (probably cause I like to take my time and enjoy a game). And if you want just more than my seal of approval, my wife applauded as the credits rolled :APPLAUSE: seriously ;)^

Click here to be taken to the game's website and find you a copy! DO IT! PLAY IT! Then come back and thank me later.

I layed this game a while ago and loved it. Man, I was so scared a ghost would po up especially when that is part of the story. And when that ghost did come, I was so scared I couldnt sleep for the rest of the evening!

;)

Ok ok, just messing, but I did rush to the attic being absolutely horrified by what I thought I would find.

The problem is that there's nothing to the game outside of walking around and picking up stuff to get a tidbit of the story. And that the story itself isn't even that good, spoiler alert: The family went out and the little sister stole everything of value to elope with her girlfriend. Nothing you do matters. There is no mystery to solve, you don't impact the plot. It's worth nothing I utterly despise stories that can be solved by the protagonist not being present.

And the atmosphere is a lie! Unlike, say Amnesia, which also uses the fear that something might happen, until it eventually does and all subsequent feelings of paranoia are then justified, Gone Home doesn't have that. It pretends to be a horror game just for marketing, and then fails to deliver. It's like Five Nights at Freddy's but all the animatronics stay right where they are and all you do is find out what Phone Guy was doing.

But the worst thing, the absolutely worst thing is the people with dramatically low standards who praise this games because of this "Games as art" mentality, and think it's just the "CoD generation" bashing the game. It's like the biggest "**** you." Because apparently I have standards and I don't want to play a trash walking simulator because a bunch of reviewers were paid off to love it, apparently that must mean I have no standards at all.

It's not a good game. There is nothing anyone, anywhere, could possibly say to convince me otherwise. It's a half-assed piece of crap and they only got away with it by duping people into it by invoking "games as art."

You know what I finished the other night? Fallout 4: Far Harbor. The Island itself is legitimately creepy, covered in a rad-heavy fog and populated with angry abominations. (Not helped by the fact that I was in my 50s, so the game sent the really nasty stuff after me) You actions have proper impact and determine how the story plays out and concludes, and there's a serious ambiguity about everything. (Is Kasumi really a synth? Is the Sole Survivor really human? Is DiMA good or is he has bad as Tektus? Is Far Harbor itself worth saving or should you just burn it to the ground? That's up to you to decide) All this from a $25 DLC that took me a monumental 18 hours to complete. (Some full games don't last that long, no DLC is expected to last that long, but Bethesda delivers) You know, everything Gone Home wanted to be, but without lying or half-assing it, and for a mere $5 more.

You really think the people who make a budget restricted game like Gone Home have enough money to buy off reviewers? Did the people who made Proteus buy the reviewers too? Is it because those who did "Everyone's Gone to the Rapture" didnt pay reviewers that it got such a low score?

Also, the value of a purchase is subjective. If we only look at the cost and how much time of entertainment that gives us then paying 10-20$ to watch a 2 hour film at the movies is something none of us would do. Or paying 100$ for an MP toy that just sits on a shelf and doesnt provide much entertainment aside from the few times you would transform it would be a terrible purchase.

Not like there's a whole lot of other explanations. The user reviews aren't exactly positive. And it's not like you need a whole hell of a lot of money to bribe maybe fifty people off, especially when you're betting on the reviews convincing a lot of rubes to shell out $20 a pop for a slightly-interactive 3 hour long maximum YA novel.

That said, it did come out when it came to light that, yeah, a lot of game journalists, especially Kotaku, are actually incredibly corrupt.

william-james88 wrote:Did the people who made Proteus buy the reviewers too?

First time I've ever heard of that game. But from what little research I did, it looks like they actually earned those reviews.

william-james88 wrote:Is it because those who did "Everyone's Gone to the Rapture" didnt pay reviewers that it got such a low score?

Er...the scores for that game are only slightly lower than Gone Home. That said, a lot of people seem to be shaking off this whole "Walking Simulators are art" nonsense.

You want to see games as art? Play Journey. $15 on PS3 or PS4, and getting it for one let's you get it for free on the other. It's is easily the most beautiful game I've ever played, and it's the only game soundtrack to have been nominated for a Grammy for Best Original Score. (Its competitors that year were Howard Shore, Hans Zimmer, and John freaking Williams.)

william-james88 wrote:Also, the value of a purchase is subjective.

To an extent. There is such a thing as overpaying.

Oh, cute, trying to use a totally unrelated medium as an example, and also grossly exaggerating the numbers! Do you seriously pay $20 a ticket for the movies?

And like I condescendingly said, that's a totally unrelated thing. Do you seriously expect the same experience from a movie as you do a video game? Because I don't.

Yeah, I don't do that. I got MP Optimus when I was a kid with money I got from my birthday, but that's the extent of it.

That is how much it would cost me to see Warcraft on an "Imax" screen tomorrow. Not today though, since its cheapy tuesday.

Seems like that is Naughty Dog's entire agenda, and they are probably one of the top 5 most popular game studios right now. Definitely Playstation's champion first party developper.

But lots do. Or else they would stop selling em. My only point was that value for amount of entertainment in minutes is very subjective. Even in games. A game can be long but not fun to play. You can buy the risen series for cheap but its a slog and there are plenty better things we could do with the time spent playing that game. And that notion can be extrapolated to other things.

And yes I do agree that there is such a thing as overpaying. I personally feel I overpaid when I bought Stanley's parable for 5$. That was a walking simulator and it was similar to watching a boring ass movie that didnt go anywhere (like Lost in Translation).

It isn't. While their games are highly cinematic and story driven, there still, you know gameplay. There's actually less cutscenes-to-gameplay in a Naughty Dog game than there is in a Metal Gear Solid game.

You can buy the risen series for cheap but its a slog and there are plenty better things we could do with the time spent playing that game. And that notion can be extrapolated to other things.

And a game can be short, stupid and all hell, and still be sold for $20. And then people will act as though it's the best game ever simply because they don't understand that it didn't do anything that other games hadn't done vastly superior ages ago. Having stuff littered around to expand the story? They mastered that with System Shock 2 in '99, and they had an entire proper game to go along with that.

Honestly I felt that was worth it just for the Narrator.

So right there you just confirmed that value and worth is really in the eye of the beholder.

I never said it wasn't. I said there's a limit.

It is, however, tremendously hilarious that, rather than argue any of the actual points I made on the game, you instead try to poke holes in something you only imagined that I said.

Your whole argument with the fallout 4 expansion was about the worth of a game. I am not poking holes, I am simply stating that not everyone will agree with your idea of worth since it is in the eye of the beholder.
I also greatly dislike how you are coming at me now making fun of my arguments. I am trying to be civil and I did enjoy our back and forth. I dont now and I dont care to continue.

And I greatly dislike how obvious it is you never actually read my post. Or you did read it and just missed the points I was trying to make by several miles. I'm not even going to bother explaining it to you, you can go back and read it for yourself--properly this time--if you want to understand.
