Try Bloodbourne and Doom - Doom is legitimate, pure adrenaline fueled fun, having played the first 2-3 levels, I'd buy a ps4 to play it, and I don't often buy games (the last one being Dynasty Warriors 8 XL and Pokemon Sapphire 2 years ago) Definitely recommend both or just Doom ;)^

Doom, yes and Wolfenstein as well. But not sure about Bloodbourne, I do not like being frustrated playing games. It doesnt seem to have much of a story either. It's pretty nuts how things changed. Just a few years ago we had Bioshock, Last of Us, and Tomb Raider, all in the same year, and they were all single player action adventure games with a story driving the game forward. Plus all the uncharted games and God of War Games and Far Cry Games which also had a story. I know Bloodbourne doesnt have a direct narrative, its more of a tone and lore, does Doom have a story? The only recent game I can think of that does have a good narrative is the Witcher 3 but I will be waiting for it to be discounted on steam to play.

Doom has a narrative, it's just eschews it directly showing the player cutscene's and stuff so as to not interrupt the gameplay. and the dark souls and bloodbourne games don't have much of a narrative at all - it's never been it's thing, so one shouldn't expect it from them, but, I agree, it's certainly for a niche audience.

Here ya go, the game reviewers I trust, where they discuss games as quality products, and not as hyped merchandise - they'll burn a game in fire if it deserves it, and shower a game in praise if it deserves it, take them as you will.

Bloodbourne keeps tempting me and I did enjoy Demon Souls a lot. I'm kinda over story and I just want game play. Demon never did, but Dark Souls annoyed me. It was probably just sequelitis. If I wait long enough it's been new and shiny again.

I enjoyed Doom 3 and I'd give the new one a shot as I've heard good things.

I was just giving you a hard time about selling the games :-P but I'll ch Co those bids later. I'm in between reviews and could use a new source.

Speaking of hard and frustrating and first person but not a shooter - Alien: Isolation. I also recently picked up the Resident Evil HD remake on PS4. I played it a bit and learned that I forgot how to play survival games. The short version is I'm playing like a pussy, but I've got years of being overly cautious habits I need to work through and break.

I'm just way to concerned about using all my good stuff and not taking my lumps and preserving. I load constantly and never make any progress until I'm bored and frustrated. The next time I fire one up I'm going bawls in and if I fail and have to start over then so be it.

Alien is probably my fav sci-fi universe and its nice to not just be another space marine. Your character is more or less helpless (even though you get a revolver). Youre forced to outsmart and sneak around the in game threats. Talk about a heart pounding ride. That game really flairs up the anxiety. During a particularly tense moment my dog decided to bark at the mailman; I had to literally walk away and let my heart rate settle down.

I have a fun story about my first survival horror experience before there was even a genre for it. The OG Resident Evil. It helps if you've played it but here is the intro because it is required to fully appreciate my tale.

So watch that and I'll wait here and set the scene. So this was the mid 90s when developers still didn't know what to do with all the "space" on CD roms. So full motion video was the name of the game.

OK so I rented the PS1 a few times and I wasn't really all that impressed, but I was a young man with a full time job and next to no bills. I read all about this new game that was so awesome. This was pre Internet (well at least in my neck of the woods) so all I had to go on was a few reviews and the pics on the back of the box.

My Dad and I went to KB Toys (remember them) and I bought a PS1 and RE. Oh I couldn't wait to get home. I hooked up the PS as fast as I could barely skimmed the manual while it was booting up.

To this day that still gives me goose bumps. Man was I HYPED! Ooooooo I couldn't wait I couldn't wait and then that intro. My jaw dropped open, bad memories of all those terrible FMV games on the Sega CD flashed before me like the ghost of video games past, thoughts of how much money I just wasted ran through my mind. What have I done!?! YOU CAN'T RETURN OPENED GAMES! Well what happened next was the same thing that was happening across the globe. Minds exploding as the birth of a new genre was witnessed first hand. That actually happened a lot during the PS1 era. Metal Gear Solid was the next game to blow my mind, but that a tale for another day.

I picked REmake HD up too, since it was being given out for free to PS+ subscribers. I picked up, played and Beat Resident Evil 0 HD, which means Code Veronica is the only main-series game I haven't beaten yet.

PS4 Cactaur I think. But I'm not looking to buddy up. I may not play past the free 30 days. I'd love to get hooked, but I doubt I'll do any party stuff. I'm just a stubborn single player. Can't teach and old dog new tricks.

Yeah, I got both RE remakes via the humble bundle then RE1 hits plus; story of my life. And one of the reasons I hold out on games, especially indie games.

I enjoyed CV on the dreamcast and wouldn't mind giving it a spin again. I'm pretty sure I didn't complete it.

Platform is actually irrelevant, as both Playstation and PC users share the same servers. Anyone you talk to in chat could, in fact, be on either system. Or in some cases, they could be using both; I had to switch from PS4 to PC due to hardware issues, but I logged into the same account, same server, same character, same friends list, etc. etc. Only personal settings (HUD layout, hotbars, gear sets, etc.) are stored locally, everything else is server-side, and those servers don't care what platform you connect from.

And if you're not planning on grouping up, you're not going to be playing long, the first dungeon is Sastasha at level 15, and it's main story so you can't not do it. Which is your loss, really, as group content can be really fun if you're willing to learn.

There were som decent deals on the nintendo store for cybermonday (dont know if they are still on). I FINALLY got Fire Emblem Awakening, after years of trying to get it for below $30. Also got the megaman collection for $9.

And for black friday, I missed out on those new 3ds consoles at the amazing prices but I did get the 3-DS games DK Country and Super Mario 3-D land for $19.99, a piece (all in canadian dollars, so great deals all around!).

Thanks, but I saw the deals. Nothing piqued my interest. I have MMLC on the PS4 (I'd rather have it portable but I'm not double dipping). I picked up FE:A some time ago for around $15 on a random KMart clearance. I like the game and I'd like to spend more time with it. I got stuck on a pretty early fight and because of "oh shiny" I haven't went back. Maybe now is the time to give it another go.

I like the turn based strategy games like this even though I'm not very good at them. I'll see where I'm stuck and see if one of you hard asses can help me out. If I remeber correctly it's something super embarrassing like the second or third battle

I was interested in that new 3ds especially at that price but I wasn't going try that hard to get one. I find the XL I have a bit to large for my liking. I want a *new* 3ds for the wrong reason. I've decided to take it off the want list and enjoy the one I have.

What I'm most excited to check out is the new "Foundation" update to NMS. I'm out of town and that'll have to wait until I get home.

You lost me there, care to explain further? I am not aware of most words used in taht sentence haha.

And great deal on Fire Emblem, it was never that cheap here. That and freaken Bravely Default. Cant catch a break with that one. I also wnt to play shovel knight but it istn cheap either. And super Metroid is still over $10. Didnt they already get all their money with that game?

Edit: I clicked your link and it all makes sense. I wont get into NMS though.

FE was a super lucky pick up just before KMart stopped selling games, most of the ones I see on my travels are closing now. Bravely Default is a great game. It really reminds me of Final Fantasy of yore. The job system is quite fun. My entire team is at lvl 99 and maxed at pretty much all the jobs I care about for each member. I'm kinda mentally stuck at the slog that happens close to the end of the game though. I pick it up about once a month and push a little farther until I get bored again. I'll be skipping 2nd. Have I ever mentioned I like grinding (see below). :-P

I'm jonesing for a Super Metroid playthrough bad. I'm pretty sure I puked my love of that genre on your thread. What I'm hoping for at this point is a SNES Classic edition. That'd do me real nice. The NES Classic Ed. have been treating me well. I've done a lot of emulating over the years and the offical controllers are the way games should be experienced. The 3ds emu is nice but it doesn't hold a candle to the NES classic.

I still enjoy NMS and was playing it the day they announced the update. There wasn't much to do but I was enjoying upgrading my new ship and optimizing the upgrade layouts of my suit and multitool now that I've learned the correct way of doing it.

It seems like they are putting an interesting if not sorely late to the party twist to the game. It's probably too little too late kind of a thing and really still doesn't feel like a complete thought or game. I still enjoy the game for what is is and I'm excited to have some new pointless things to do in the game. NMS deserves all the criticism it has received, but for people with the right mindset it can be quite an enjoyable experience.

I am worried about booting up after the update. The last time they did a major update I almost lost my save. I was stuck in the floor of a trading post and couldn't get out or kill myself. As a last ditch effort I deleted the update being me back to pre day one release. I had to boot up with my PS4 offline. I got "lucky" and was stuck in the ground instead falling. I quickly was able to get in my ship and destroy it via ground collision. Of course then I had to fix the damn thing.

The cool part is I never played the game pre patch and man was it a different beast. It was kind of a double edge sword of interesting and frustrating.

The latest patch before the foundation one brought some nice stability and graphical updates as well as a few odd planetary changes. After such a long time of silence I just figured that was the end of NMS and we had the final project.

I don't buy new games very often and it's nice to be getting another small chunk of what should have been in the final game. Who knows maybe it'll be a complete game at some point. Either way I'll enjoy what I got and it will be nice to set myself a few new objectives until the sameyness gets boring again. It's a game best served in small doses over time.

I loved Bloodborne! It truly felt like it was a great step for From Software with this genre.

Sure, I'm lovin Dark Souls3, but it doesn't feel fresh like Bloodborne did.

My approach to playing these games is:
1. Suicide run for treasure
2. Suicide run for secrets/shortcuts
3. Suicide run to learn boss patterns
4. Level-up after boss defeat (unless dying & retrying produce enough re/stored souls!)

Retroview, a different generation or so ago

Postby no-one » Tue May 23, 2017 7:30 pm

So who wants to talk about a game that was released 20 years ago besides me? No one? Fine

Image
Any one remember, played or even heard of this little gem?

I thought of this game because TFA Ironhide's Cybertroninan altmode reminds me of one of the Fuchikoma tanks. I recently saw the live action movie after re-watching the original animated movie and the animated movie is better. There was some neat 1:1 recreations, but that's neither here nor there. I will argue that the game had cut-scenes better than most of the new movie [-(

So Ghost in the Shell on PSone is really nothing to write home about. It was a serviceable game and I enjoyed it for what it was and it had a pretty decent soundtrack. The game was developed by Exact and a quick half-search seems to point that they either became JapanStudio or was absorbed by them. The only game I remember noteworthy from Exact was the Jumping Flash! series of the same time frame. Hit that link, they were pretty fun, more so than GitS... (really, that's the acronym ?!? ).

What I want to highlight here is the badass intro. Let's take a quick look.

See it was a different time back then. We were at the doorstep of an emerging new format and no one knew what to do with all the space on CDs. "All the space" hehe, hindsight really is 20/20. Before the PSone, most of that space was just filled with god awful FMV and so was the first generation of PSone games. If not clogged full of bad CG videos the games were still using Redbook music format, which suited me just fine as I would just pop the game discs into a CD player and jam it on the one ;)^

Back to my point. Most games had some type of hype inducing intro video before the title menu. I loved these and especially the one from Ghost in the Shell (probably more so than the game itself). I used to watch these intros to get psyched to play the game, which usually didn't resemble the video at all. It seems like a bit of a dead art now as most modern games load directly into the title menu which then loads directly into a 30 minute tutorial. Most of the games that come to mind that had really excellent intros were from the PSone era, Wild Arms comes to mind.

So do you miss them, do you hate them, am I off base and just started pressing the skip button? Share some of your favorite intro movies below ;)^

Despite lovin the original anime, I never played this game, Cary! And seeing a Playstation game definitely brongs back great memories of Resident Evil, Castlevania: Symphony of the Night (with the best Game Over screen EVER), FF7, FF8, Omega Boost, WipeOutXL, Lunar, Chrono Cross...FF Tactics!! I loved that opening theme so damn much I'd let it play before starting up.

Don't forget Front Mission 3(!), Valkyrie Profile, Metal Gear Solid.....I could go on about this gaming-era lol

Yes, those are some good games you mentioned. I'm way over due on a SotN playthough. It's sitting on my vita getting ignored. Many a happy hour was spent jamming out while playing WipeOut XL. I've also been considering a MGS playthough after poking around in MGSV.

More on topic been years since I've even thought of Omega Boost. Polyphony Digital's other game (that few people even remember) had a bad ass intro that featured Loudmouth's Fly.

If I remember correctly it was a pretty Ok on rails space shooter?

Speaking of big mechs and licensed music, remember this one?

The good old PSX. I had most of the Capcom fighters, any Need for Speed that was released, Ridge Racer, and of course Gran Turismo. Still never 100% that game. So many cars and races!!

One of my favorite Square titles from then was Brave Fencer Musashi. Not sure why, just really liked it. Parasite Eve was good, Resident Evil 2, Megaman 8. Good times!!

I never could get into BFM, but PE was neat.

MM8 had some of the worst voice acting ever

RE2 was gold though ;)^

Riiiiiiiidddddggggeeee RAAAAAACCCCCEEEEEERRRR! Good times!

I got totally obsessed with GT2. I had a Dodge Neon at the time so I got one in game and suped it up. I'd spend hours racing, watching replays, tweaking settings, rinse repeat. That little Neon could best almost any car in the game on twisty tracks. I'd always get passed in the long straight aways though

I'm still chasing that racing game purple dragon and that's word!

I wouldn't say no one knew what to do with all the space. Just a few months before the GitS game came out, Squaresoft had this little indie hit, you may have heard of it, it was called Final Fantasy VII. They packed two discs full of game and that still wasn't enough so the grand finale got its own disc to itself. VIII and IX used multiple discs as well, (And a year later, Metal Gear Solid would do the same thing--something Otacon would laugh about in MGS4) and even VII's remake is going to be so massive it'll take up three discs, only this time it'll be dual-layered Blu-Rays!

The sheer size of CD-ROMs is what attracted Squaresoft to Sony to begin with. The Nintendo 64 had the superior hardware, but its cartridges couldn't hold enough data to make use of that. (Hence why PS1 games tend to look better) Square needed more room for VII to grow, and they jumped ship over to Sony. Besides having fancy CG openings, my favorite thing about going disc-based with gaming had to be the music.

Sure, I loved 8-bit MIDI music, but hearing orchestrated tunes was pure ear-candy!

I totally followed Squenix to the PSOne, thanks to my love for FFVI. That RPG also got me fully back into gaming....even if my favorite RPGs have changed.

True true, a few peeps knew how to fill disc full of content, but to be fair FFVII was chock-full of CG sequences. MGS was slap dab full of VO and don't even get me started on all the lame super long install times for MGS4, Argh

I was a naive nintendo kid back. Then, but my general dissatisfaction with the N64 started digging it's grave and Square's jump to the Playstation firmly hammered the coffin shut, kicked it in and poured concrete on top :michaelbay:

I'm cautiously excited for the FFVII remake. Hopefully they will leave what made that game great intact and not pull a George Lucas.

Squaresoft. The merger with Enix didn't happen until the PS2 era, after the release of FF10. (Fun fact, the original release of 10 has the Squaresoft logo on it, the Greatest Hits version has the Square Enix logo)

I don't think FF7 was all that heavy on FMVs, there were maybe a half dozen on the first disc, spread pretty far apart from each other.

We already know for a fact that they are only going to be adding to the game. In Star Wars terms, Han will still shoot first, but the whole event will be more fleshed out.

Good point, Shadowman! I am just used to calling them that nowadays....and I fell out of love with them around FFXI or FFX-2.

Although I loved Nier, Drakengaard3, and Nier Automata is on my To Do list! We will see about FF7.5 ;)

So whatcha playing, Cary? I'm still glued to Persona5, but I did recently start up Utawarerumono: Mask of Deceptionon the PS Vita.

It's a visual novel/SRPG from Atlus - entertaining story, no doubt...

Oh jeez, I'm spastic as hell when it comes to jumping from game to game. 8-}

PS4: Diablo 3 now that the necromancer is a thing. Loving that class. Was my favorite back in the D2 days. It's more or less what I've wanted for about 15 years, the necromancer on console. Also splitting time between No Man's Sky, Wither 3, Divinity: Original Sin, Driveclub, Styx: MoS and Adrift. I recently finished TF: Devastation and ABZU

PS3: Binary Domain and I just finished the Adam Venture Chronicles and Mars: War Logs both of which I thoroughly enjoyed. 8-)

PSVita: I'm barely playing it, but when I do - Lumo, Slain: Back from Hell, Freedom Wars and Persona 4

3DS: LoZ:OoT and Blaster Master: Zero

TL;DR - a lot but spread thinly.

Even though I'm about to google Utawarerumono: Mask of Deception tell me more about it.

Visual novel eh? I absolutely loved Zero Escape: Virtue's Last Reward. I want to say I 100% trophied that game, but it may be one of those you can't help but 100% by just playing it. I played on it on the Vita while traveling for work and just loved the experience. One of my fondest memories is that even though the game has a way for you to take notes in game, I did all my note taking on paper. Been decades since I've had to do that. But here's the best part; when I was finished with all the cryptic notes, I'd tear them off and leave them in the hotel bibles  I'm excited for Zero Time Dilemma ;)^ :x

Is Utawarerumono: Mask of Deception anything like ZE:VLR?

More straight-up visual novel, Cary -- so no puzzles like VLR, but about 17 tactical RPG style battles (think FF Tactics) throughout the 20+ hours. Mainly reading with Japanese voice-overs though.

I still need to complete Zero Time Dilemma! I was also in the middle of Steins Gate....and then there's the PS4 backlog.
