That's funny; I have a very similar quest. Different start point, same end game.

I'm pretty sure there is a co-op achievement that can be earned.

LoZ: OoT - The Non Wikia Play-through Project - Update

Postby no-one » Mon Mar 28, 2016 10:37 pm

I'm not stuck; just a quick update, more of statement really. So I got through the rolly polly fish head dungeon. Played the tune, traveled through time. Got back to the Forest Temple and man, the game really has stepped it's difficulty a notch.

Rocking the headphones and the music is really dope! ;)^

HOW DID I MISS THE UPDATES?!

Also, I'm playing Paper Mario: Sticker Star currently on the *new* 3DS XL. It's quite fun! Never played any Paper Mario games, picked this up a looooooong time ago new for cheap ($9.99 sale at GameStop). Just now getting to it.

Now if I could just get to Luigi's Mansion..

They ever do a new Wipeout? I downloaded a game recently on the Wii U called Fast Racing Neo, and it's pretty nice. It appears very fast.

As of right now the prognosis doesn't look good. That's why I won't delete Wipeout HD/Fury from my PS3 or Wipeout 2048 from my Vita. I could always just re-download them.

Sony bought Psygnosis years ago and have since disbanded them.

Never say never and let's keep that candle lit. Wipeout has been one of my favorite series for over 20 years.

Retro Review - Kirby Mass Attack

Postby no-one » Wed Jun 01, 2016 11:49 am

Kirby is one of those series that I just missed. Not out of any particular reason, I just missed them. The first game, Kirby's Dream Land, was released on an aging system that I wasn't playing at the time and I was probably being a too cool for school teenager.

Image
I wonder what flavor Kriby is?

I've always liked the little fella and even though I have no history with the adorable pink ball of fluff, I just want to pick up his amiibo when I spot it in the store. Well thanks to a fellow...

I finally have my chance in the form of Kirby Mass Attack for the Nintendo DS to get to know Kirby.

Image
Betcha can't eat just one!

I remember when this game came out, it had positive reviews and I wanted to play it. Much like the original Kirby game, it was released on a system I just wasn't playing at the time. So I decided to skip the reviews and just jump right in. I know the general premise behind the Kirby games. Side-scrolling platformer where Kirby gains the powers of his enemys, right? Well yeah, except in this game.

It's still an eat all the things affair, but something is different here.

Image
NOM NOM NOM

You see, in this game you guide Kirby around with the stylus via taps and flicks, WHAT?!? So yeah, I was wondering around the first stage trying to figure out why I just couldn't drive the little pink ball of fluff myself. That was until I had about eight of the little bastards on screen at a time.

Image
And now you know where Kirbys come from

That's when it all made sense. I have an army to deal with and I can split the team up or concentrate all fire on a single enemy. Both strategies work and are required to get the most out of this game. I'm only a few levels in, but my expectations have been blown away. This game isn't just a platformer, its a side-scrolling puzzle platformer. Neat ;)^

Image
KICK! CHOMP! It's all in the GUT!

Kirby Mass Attack is a fun puzzle platformer, with multiple goals to achieve giving good reasons to retread old levels. I look forward to digging a little deeper into the world of Pop Star over the next couple of weeks. Protip: double tap to run! If you're an old Kirby verteran, a Kirby newb or just looking for something a little different; I'd give Mass Attack a solid Cary ;)^ seal of approval.

Image
Nothing like a pink triangle of fluffy power...

BTW... now I really want these figures :-(

I've yet to play the Kirby games except in the NES Remix series. I have Kirby's Adventure in 3D Classics format on my 3DS, still haven't played it. Pretty sure I got it free from Club Nintendo. I like the concept, gaining powers from enemies and such like Mega Man defeating a boss (or the upcoming Mighty No. 9 by Keiji Inafune!!). Maybe I'll try it out. Or buy Kirby and the Rainbow Curse on the Wii U.

My wife loves Kirby, I've tried to get her back in to the vidya games. Maybe this'll be the push I need.

I did also start playing Kirby's Epic Yarn but its also a very very different Kirby game than anything else and not related to previous mechanics in the franchise. It was too cute and kiddy for me. But Mass Attack was great. Cary, if you like the puzzles so far, they get even better. What amazes me so much about nintendo games is how they keep a very simple a tight control scheme and do everything they possibly can with it. There is an actual level in mass attack where you operate a tank with the kirbys and keep shooting them out at enemies. And it still uses just the stylus somehow. I am currently playing Luigi's Mansion Dark Moon and there are only 4 different actions: Flashlight, uv light, suck with vacuum cleaner or blow with vacuum cleaner. And they give you all sorts of senarios using those 4 simple actions that it feels so diverse.

First Party Nintendo games do seem to use the controls that they give you in some pretty fun ways. I really need to fire up Star Fox Zero and give everyone my take on it. People have complained about the controls in that game, but I'm fairly certain they'll be just fine. I'm playing Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker right now and that is a pretty fun game. It makes use of the GamePad pretty smartly, only frustrating me when the camera moves because of the gyro sensor when I'm not expecting it!

Nintendo is really good about cutting out the fluff and not padding games. They are still one of the best game developers. Now if they'd stop mucking around with gimmicky consoles. I like limitations myself, it spurs creativity.

I've found myself more and more drawn to retro gaming lately. All the new fluff and stuff just isn't doing for me. Speaking of; I just fired up another "retro" game this week. Does PS2 count as retro?

So yeah I have a bad case of ooooooo, shiny when it comes to games.

Sony has been re-releasing/porting PS2 games to the PS4 lately. They are bumping up the resolution and adding trophies, but leaving them at the standard 4:3 format (unless the game had a built in 16:9 mode). I want to say that this game was maybe in the second batch of PS2 games to get the PS4 treatment. This is a game I've been wanting to play since it's release in 2007.

For what ever reason, probably budgetary, I missed this game when it was first released. I remember trying to track it down for rent at Blockbuster (remember them days?). I tried all the stores in my area (at the time there were quite a few) and couldn't find it. Time moved on and so did I. Two console generations later I'd still run across mentions of this game. I'd go look up used prices on amazon or ebay and just run. Didn't really matter anyway because I've long since sold my PS2.

Then it happened, PS2 games on PS4 where announced. There may have even been a fan poll to see which games were going be added. Either way, this game made it to the PSN in February of this year. You've probably already seen the image below, but I'm talking about Rogue Galaxy!

Image

Does it live up to the hype? I think I just might. I've only barely gotten through the first part, but I feel very positive about the potential of a grand space adventure. It's an action RPG set in a sci fi meets the wild west full of space pirates universe; it's right up my alley. I'm still fumbling a bit with the controls and the interface is a little outdated. I kinda like it that way.

The graphics have been given a bit of a resolution bump and look surprisingly nice for the age. Cel-shaded games tend to age well. The story has been kinda vague so far. All I know is that I'm a slave of some sort that collects bounties for food and I've been mistaken for some legendary bounty hunter. I'm just about to jump on a ship and blow this back water planet. It feels very much like the start of a hero's journey. So paint me excited!

I think I will play this game much like I am playing LoZ: OoT, with no help from the internet. I'll just fumble my way through like it was 2007 all over again ;)^

Its interesting but while it might seem the newer consoles are offering us more, I feel they really dont. The big PS4 exclusive last year was the hottly anticipated Order 1886. But it was the most limited game you could possibly play. You HAD to go in a certain place, you had to do things a certain way and it was mostly cinematics with boss fights that were just repeats of oneanother with looping telegraphed moves. Now thats limited. I just played Castlevania Portrait of Ruin and there was so much stuff in there, I touched only the surface. Al I mastered was throwing the bible at Dracula and I realized that when you master it you can throw several at the same time. So now all I am wondering is what happens when you master the 50 other weapons in the game.

On the head you nailed it. I've been saying this for years, that games need to stop trying to be movies. The developers are sacrificing gameplay for narrative. I don't watch a lot of movies because I like to be the one doing things. If you wanna dazzle me with cool effects and over the top scenes, just have me put the controller down and show me a cut-scene, otherwise stay out of my way and let me play the damn game.

I've skipped almost all of the big AAA games lately. I know people who are super hyped for Uncharted 15 or whatever number they are actually up to, but I just don't like those games. They are just a linear path that lead you from ridiculous shooting gallery to the next. The first one started the fire on the bridge by pretending to be Tomb Raider and the second one pretty much blew up the bridge and the river it was crossing. To add insult to injury the Tomb Raider reboot was trying to be Uncharted which was doing a bad job at trying to be a Tomb Raider game :HEADHURTS:

Tomb Raider was a 3D environmental puzzle game. Here is a big room now you have to figure out how to get from point A to point B - oh yeah we're not even going to tell you where point B is. Cool, thanks I'll figure it out and have fun while doing it I may even shoot a couple bats along the way. What's so hard about that type of game anyway? Sorry, I have a special spot in hell reserved for the Uncharted series and their story over gameplay ilk.

Anyway, I like gameplay short and simple. I like to be tossed into game and left to my own devices and not shown how the game wants me to play it so I can trigger the next big "wow" moment.

Also QTEs can suck it and suck it hard :-x Will, you may have picked at a pretty tender scab.

BTW, I'm still super excited for No Man's Sky - you know if they ever release it. I hope they just drop me on a planet and just tell me to **** off until I figure it out.

Them sequelitis vids are awesome. I suffer from sequelitis myself.

I feel the same way that he does about Mega Man X; he's not called Rock Man for no reason.

Now as good as X is if you really wanna bring that **** to a whole new level check this game out.

Image

Shivers, I gots them. Bonus when you beat the game you get to play as Vile which is like a whole new game because he just isn't a purple X he is a completely different beast. You play the same levels and beat the same bosses, but each one gives you multiple different weapons and there is some mixing and matching going on because Vile has three attacks. The catch is that Vile only has so much power so you can just equip all the best stuff until you upgrade; the second catch is that once you load Vile out, your stuck until you exit the level. Vile mode is where's its at!

I may have to download this to my Vita tonight because oooooo, shiny!

PSP actually, but I have the digital version that is compatible with the Vita (played originally on the PSP).

I did play the Powered Up MM. I liked the style but the gameplay was a little dated. I did not like the two new guys they added either. I kept a candle lit for a Mega Man 2 Powered Up, but alas, it was not meant to be :-(

I remember being right there with him on most of the OoT critiques. It did get a little dark though.

I'm actually having a hard time motivating myself to play OoT. It's just feeling a little too closed/small/linear for my tastes. It's like I want that gameplay, but in a different package. Kingdoms of Amalur has been filling in that need very well lately.
