When was Transformers first ruined forever?

As the older fans will remember, the Transformers franchise is regularly ruined FOREVER. Prowl being a motorbike is simply the latest thing that's doomed Hasbro to certain bankruptcy. Minicons, beast modes and Michael Bay have similarly raped our childhood in the past. But what I'm wondering is: what was the first thing to ruin Transformers? Was it Headmasters? Pretenders? Or something else? Opinions, please.

Beast Wars, I just can't see the point to them.

Cute topic. :D

There are several things that have "ruined" Transformers.
Not financially, but either for me personally, or, imo, have hurt the brand's uniqueness.

I'm a continuity fan.
It was one of the things that made it stand out from other all the other dull mech shows, so the addition of new continuities still let me enjoy it, but only in a What if? kinda way, where I don't actually care what happens to these people.
I also hate things stuck in the past, and don't consider redoing G1 over and over is actually giving us something new, so with each new reboot I think it looses a bit of it's magic, and I lose a little more passion.

The second was the Beast style. I didn't like it personally, but in Beast Wars at least it made sense as they had moved on tech wise; they weren't Transformers, they were something genuinely new.
When I see them in later lines though, they just seem out of place among the more traditional looking bots.
Well, with the exception of Animated.

The third is the movie.
I was a G1 comic fan and always thought the show was bad, but the movie makes it look like an intellectual masterpiece.
When I watched the movie, I could see every negative thing everyone has levelled against the franchise over the years, it made me hate Transformers.
And the designs, whilst not all bad, lost too much of the visual identity imo.
Whatever people think of "traditional" style (Diaclone meets Microman) it was different to everything else out there bar the lines it came from.
Macross and Gundam have moved on whilst being very traditional, but Transformers hasn't.
Not ruined forever as some fans claim, but certainly weaker for having done it, imo.

Yeah, I can see this thread being fun.

Transformers is far from ruined. Hasbro are far from bankruptcy with their share from the movie, Transformers in fact is once again huge thanks to the movie. It'll be around for a few years yet.

Are there things I don't like? Yes. I don't like Animated. But it's not going to ruin Transformers.

See, Transformers to me is more than just the current line of the day. Transformers mythology covers 20+ years meaning I have over 20 years of history to enjoy if I don't like the current stuff.

But completely and utterly ruined? No, that's just an opinion.

Agreed. TF's not ruined. Sure, it may be taking a direction some fan's don't like, but it is far from ruined.

I see some people aren't quite at ease with subtle, British humour. So, whilst it's generally considered bad form to have to explain a joke, here goes: I KNOW Transformers isn't ruined forever. I'd kinda hoped that the article I linked to would make it clear that I don't believe Hasbro will spontaneously combust as a result of Michael Bay/Munkys/whatever. Ok?

We now return to your scheduled thread...

I hadn't really thought of the point about Beast TFs being shoe-horned into other lines, but they don't really work, do they? It sorta worked in RID, with the bad guys being Predacons and all, but in Armada it was a bit weird. "Ok, I'm Optimus Prime, I turn into a truck. That guy there turns into a car, and the dude in the corner is a techno-organic dinosaur." Didn't fit.

Thing is, whilst you were joking, that wiki exists because there are enough people who do believe that, many of whom are on these boards, as well as those who automatically take any opinion from someone believing the franchise has been ruined for them personally as one of the overdramatic harbingers of doom, so aware of you're humour or not, threads like these are almost always doomed to bursting into seriousness and anyone's comments being taken out of context or ignored in favour of soapbox posts.

*edit* including myself.

Sure, we could do that. Or we could have a light-hearted debate about whether Munkys were worse than Pretenders. Or if it's all been downhill since ball joints. Come on, we're adults playing with toys, let's lighten up a little!

What I think did it at first is having Hot Rod be leader...WTF is wrong with the Matrix of Leadership was it high or drunk at the time...next thing is it is hidden deep within Rodimus Prime's chest going "wtf am i doing here... NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO I'M IN HOT ROD?!
THIS IS BLASTPHOMIE!!!!!!!!!!I don't know if the Matrix can talk and I'm sure it couldn't but if it could that is what it would be saying :P

It didnt sound like a joke to me. I was just saying though, nothing has raped anyones childhoods. You still lived those childhoods yourselves, you still have the good memories and nothing can take those away from you.

If you fool yourself into thinking that it has then you are a very weak person.

Thats all im saying. That kinda stuff stays with you forever, its what makes a person an individual. To say that something or someone has raped your childhood really gets on my nerves because that simply cant happen.

Transformers has always held something to me, but there are some series that just did not work for me. BW was okay, but Armada was just........silly to me.......IMO, little children in the presence of giant robots=BAD idea! Not to mention the dialogue was a bit...kindegarteny...The basic underlying idea behind the story-core is timeless and open to MUCH addition and adaption (I myself have written COUNTLESS short stories using Transformers, using characters I myself created as well as already-created ones). Transformers will always hold a place in my heart, no matter how old and decrepid I get!

Maybe so, but it's an old joke that people have become sick of hearing.

Do you know how often threads like these pop up? Far too often. Is it any wonder why some people didn't see the humour in it? Because whether it's a joke or a serious thread, it's been discussed to death a thousand times over.

Burn when you've got 23,000 plus posts, EVERYTHING has been discussed a bazillion times.

Some new guys haven't so just try to ignore it if you don't like it, or start a thread you'd rather discuss. 8)

I personally think the Quintessons being responsible for transformers creation was the turning point for the series. I really did not want them just to be robots created by another race of aliens. How many times has that old story been done?

It's similar to the same thread that's started nearly each week in the movie forum.

While I liked the movie and the movie figures a little bit, I think after the original toons were out (G1) it went down hill. I really think that the beast wars stuff was pretty lame.

Sorry, I thought you realised you were on a Transformers board. :P

The sad reality was any attempt to have fun with the thread was pointless.
I could have even posted in advance a couple of the posters and comments they were going to make.
As ridiculous as it sounds, it's just too volatile a subject.
Hell, on some boards, everything you ever said from now on would be taken as a covert way of displaying your hate for anything not G1, so it could be worse.

2 points.

1. So what if it is?

Every week, at least 1 "the movie ruined Trasnformers/my childhood/my life" thread starts, but so does 1 "the movie is the best thing ever" or crediting the movie with saving or ressurecting a franchise that hadn't gone away and was doing fine for itself.
I don't go whining in all those overly positive threads about over reactions, false claims or repetative threads do I?

No. Because I respect people's opinion and right to express it.

People have opinions, either debate intelligently or avoid, just stop whining about those that differ to yours, or, like some in this thread, responding to comments not even made here.

It just makes you (the generalised you, not specifically you) look stupid.

2. It is not similar to the other threads. It was a lighthearted joke, one that poked fun at fans who react to every change as though it killed the franchise dead.

If you wanna get angry, get angry at those that actually say something ridiculous, not those you wrongly assume say something because you can't be bothered to read their post or apply any form of context.
