Why does everybody hate Micheal Bay?

Postby Galvatron628 » Mon Aug 20, 2007 3:34 am

Its realy something I can't figure out. when I heard he was doing Transformers I was somewhat relieved. I knew he was going to do a good job, simply because action is what he specializes in.

Of his whole filmography, one I don't like and one I haven't seen. Armegeddon was a piece of ****. Pearl Harbor, I have yet to see. As for the rest well:

Bad Boys: Pretty good movie. Kind of a rip off of Lethal Weapon, but it is his first big movie so its forgivable. Does a good job taking the lethal weapon formula and updating it for the 1990's with 2 popular african american actors. Also love the Micheal Bay Coreographing of of the heroin being smuggled out of the police station.

The Rock: Man this movie kicks ass. Great Cast, Great acting, Great story. If I recall it even had great reviews, but it was overshadowed by the over-rated Indepedence Day movie that came out around the same time. I just watched this movie again tonight, first time in years. And yes it still kicks ass!

Bad Boys II: even better than the original. More Action, More humor, and a longer movie. Can it get any better than that?

The Island: Ewen Mcgregor at his best! Scarlett Johanson is also easy on the eyes. While I agree with some of the complaints about the movie, ie like how super easy it was to escape from the evil underground cloning facility, it still was a pretty damn good movie and good watch. As usual, Action was great, courtesy of Micheal bay.

Transformers: Very pleased in how this turned out. Micheal bay did the action and plot very well. Love how everything was shot from the human's perspective, it was an interesting touch, and while many people complain about it, I thought it gave the movie more of the "OMG THIS IS REALLY HAPPINING" touch it needed. Micheal Bay's best to date.

So whats with the hate? I never quite got it. Growing up my favorite movies were the Terminator series, Die Hard, Predator, and Lethal Weapon. Its thanks to Micheal Bay that these same type if action movies get to live on!

I don't quite get it either. I'd like to think Bay-haters that saw his take on Transformers wouldn't have been disappointed, though.

As for what else he's done...

Haven't seen the Bad Boys movies, though I agree they do seem to be Lethal Weapon KOs.

The Rock is the one with Cage and Connery, right? Like what I've seen of it.

Haven't seen The Island and I dunno if I want to, in spite of Scarlett.

All I remember about Armageddon is that Aerosmith had some stuff on the soundtrack.

I remember someone getting dad Pearl Harbor for some reason, and he never got to watch it I don't think. But then, I never did either, and dunno if we still have it...

Really liked Transformers. I've seen posts where people complain about character development; problem is it really wasn't a character driven movie at all IMO. it was more plot driven.

Still don't get it about people hating Bay...

My vote for the HOF goes to my favorite Transformer, Kup, to the Headmasters (who still need new figures that aren't just the characters without their master components) and to seibertron.com for for being the ultimate TF resource.

I don't hate him.

:)
He's got some pretty far-out powers to go along with them, too, including teleportation, the projection of trippy telepathic visions and illusions, and the ability to groove on the language of 98% of all known species. To uses his powers to the fullest, though, he's gotta be feelin' good vibrations; bad karma can seriously harsh his mellow, y'know?

yep that would be the one. Basically Nick Cage plays a Bio-chemist FBI agent, Sean Connery plays a captured british spy who never got fair trial who's claim to fame is he's the only one known to escape from "the rock" a.k.a. Alcatraz. After a well known hero and General goes insane and takes his crew to steal some biological weapons and take hostages of tourists of Alcatraz and threaten to drop the weapons on San Francisco if the U.S. Government doesn't meets to his terms, they enlist Connery and Cage, and a the best group of navy seals to accompany them to go in there and take out the hostile marines and disable the weapons. As you can imagine (warning spoilers), the Seals all get killed off and Cage and Connery save the day. Pretty good movie

Yeah that's something I wondered about too. Apparently this is something of a common thread. I loved The Rock. My favourite movie of all time in that genre. I thought Bay captured the heroism of the doomed SEALs very well.

There are some people calling the movie Bayformers, whatever the hell that means. And also a poem circulating, purportedly by some disgruntled person about how Bay screwed up The Transformers. Probably just because that's not how he would have done it. I wonder what he thinks about this 'screw up' now that the box office figures are in.

This still puzzles me now. Why do people hate Michael Bay?

Personally, I thought he did a fantastic job on Transformers. I really don't understand all this hate for him.

And yeah, The Rock was awesome.

I don't really care. If he delivers, which he does, I don't mind.

I can't say much about the Rock, at that time it wasn't my cup of tea. I need to see that again.

The story for Transformers wasn't executed very well but I liked the action nice enough. But since its technically a war about an alien race and the rush to find the allspark I think I can forgive it a little.

I'm in the Bay-is-OK camp. I don't see him winning any Academy Awards pretty much.... ever. But who cares right? Shallow is fun and Bay's movies are a pretty good time. I even like Pearl Harbor just for the sheer spectacle of it, although not enough to defend it. :?

I think he does a great job of putting you, the viewer in the middle of insane action sequences. Emphasis on "in the middle", not from a "god's eye view" or "some camera man in a Goodyear Blimp" view.

After watching TF 2007 you know EXACTLY what it feels like to be a busty bimbo sitting in the middle of a street while Ironhide does a mid-air transform into a forward roll right over top of you (with the help from the recoil of his arm cannons). Nice.

I dont get it either.

Its more than likely just moronic G1 purists who are unable to accept change. They didnt like the new designs and so they cried and sent death threats in vain.

Personally i enjoy his movies, they exactly what they say on the tin, and since i am an action movie nut im bound to enjoy them.

Hlel i even enjoyed Pearl Harbour to some extent.

Dunno why you thought Armageddon was so bad though..i consider that one of his best.

Why Do People Hate Michael Bay?

One, simple answer: He didn't make a movie that resembled G1 and focused on the humans as much as the TFs.

But they'd have hated Uwe Boll (for good reason...), Paul Anderson, etc.

You put anyone in the director's chair and it still would be hated by many because it doesn't cater to their specific tastes, and therefore is bitchworthy.

Here was my criteria:

Did it have Optimus Prime and other recognizable characters? CHECK.

Did it have kickass new characters that endeared themselves to us? CHECK.

Did it have action, and a good story? CHECK.

Was it G1? Nope. (Thankfully)

People hate Michael Bay because they can, and they have no voice in the decision making process of this or the other two movies due out.

Problem is, they keep forgetting that they don't have to watch it. Yet they force themselves to, and find stuff to bitch about.

Oh who am I kidding, even without watching it or knowing what goes on, they still find a reason to bitch because the stick is cemented firmly up their asses and they're stuck in the mud, with tunnelvision and a time machine so they can always look back on what was and never face the future or facts.

I don't hate Bay. He's just over his head. I wish he doesn't direct the next transformers sequel. Especially that he won't ever be faithful to the g1 mythos. He thinks his ideas count over everyone elses. Most of his films aren't even good to begin with. He's just lucky to work with big name producers like Bruckheimer ,and Spielberg. By working on many big deal so called summer blockbusters.

Actually the movie WAS faithful to the G1 mythos, but it ISNT for the millionth time, ISNT a G1 movie!!!!!

G1 will always be G1 and there will never be a exact remake of g1! We had a G1 movie back in 86, so move on! This is just a new continuity of transformers just like armada, energon and cybertron was.

From a movie watching perspective, irrespective of my opinion of the transformers, most of Bay's work oozes with his arrogance and adherance to the status quo of what counts for entertainment these days.

This movie in particular was not terrible story wise, but just completely mediocre. I found that the characters smacked of a friends'esq quality, especially any scene involving minstrel monkey Anthony Anderson (the preceding comment is okay because I am black). The characterization of the robots shifted in an unorganized fashion from heroic and serious to playful and child like.

As a director, compare Bay's work in this movie with Sam Rami's in Spiderman 2.
Spiderman 2, while shot awesomely, did manage to pay homage to his earlier style in the scene where Doc Oc is in the hospital (the Ramicam). Most of Bay's work is a complete homage to his own style from start to finish, and he is not showing any artistic growth in his style. His directing style is interchangeable from movie to movie with very little variation. In other words, I am tired of it. If he directs the next movie, it will prety much be shot in the same way, with no consideration of what errors were previously made.

Anyone could have made this movie what it was; a commercial success, but a substantive failure. You can owe that to the current trend of the 'multi picture' deal. Bay was under no pressure to make quality product because he knows that he doesn't have to. The maketing machinery has been put in place for three movies, so even if the movie is complete garbage (I don't think that, it was 20% quality, 80% trash) it doesn't matter. Between commercials, celeb interviews, toys, party favors, posters, books, etc., a second movie is definite.

As far as bay complaining about the format, he thinks this is the greatest scifi/action movie ever made, so he wants it out on all formats so that he can keep interest hot for part two. If enough people are exposed to this movie, he can garauntee big grosses for part 2 and that movie can also be touted as a successful Michael Bay film for no reason other than it generated massive amounts of money.

I have great hope for part 2 without bay at the helm. Remember, Terminator 2, Predator 2, and Aliens were all sequels that far outpaced their predecessors.

Sonray faithful to G1 mythos? I think not! It focus to much on human characters than the Bots. It refers to some cube that gives life that poses vending mountain dew machines, regenerates frenzy, and kills Megatron pointlessly. Seibertron also doesn't exist anymore. The bot fights were quick. Many characters got wasted like Jazz. There were too many plot holes. Like how the heck Bumblebee got his voice back? What happened to Barricade? Also there's the bad humor. I could go on and on.

Erm....incase you forgot, most of the entire G1 series had freaking humans in it. That arguement is retarded and moot. You could go on and on, but youd still be wrong.
