I read this second hand (ie I didn't buy it, but read a copy someone else did) and I've got to admit to really scratching my head over all the praise.

The one thing I really struggle with in this issue is the art. I enjoy it and dislike it within a matter of panels. It may be just a different style that just isn't fully clicking for me, but I like things like the facial expressions and dislike most everything else. I also don't find the writing to be that mind-blowing either; but I didn't care for the writing or story of the Beast Hunters Dinobots series or whatever it was called.
I fully understand that it's the first issue, and so expecting a fully realized story is kinda nuts, but I don't find much to be happening in here. I know people will screech at me about how can I expect a fully developed narrative in one issue, but so far, I've seen lost of posts about the glory of the narrative as presented in the same one issue.
At the same time, I can't fathom how if you don't like this after one issue you're being too quick to judge, yet people are supposed to be salivating for this to be an on-going title after the same one issue.

But then, I've got an issue with things being overhyped without having done anything to prove themselves worthy of any hype yet. I know that 90% of the hype surrounding this book comes from the gender/"evil leftist/tumblr" madness of January surrounding this character, but I personally don't see anything in this first issue that makes me interested in a second, let alone an on-going. If we are going to have an on-going focusing on one character, there are tons of better ones than Windblade to focus on.
"H-how do you know she's not the awesomest?? It's only been one issue!!"
How do we know that she IS the awesomest? It's only been one issue.

If I read the second issue, I'll probably read it second hand like I did with this one. I've really been liking MTMTE and RID, so I can't be dismissed as one of those IDW haters. I'm just not impressed by this single issue of a story that has far more hype and (imvho) unwarranted praise than it has material to be praised.

As I said in the review, the issue read to me as a punchier version of early RID. And I liked RID. I love RID Starscream and his characterisation in that series. Here Scott and Stone play on that, making him even more scheming in Windblade's eyes (as she's newer to his games).

And in that, the series is not just about Windblade. It's about Cybertron in Shockwave's aftermath, seen through her and Chromia, and other unaffiliated characters like Blurr.

The on-going possibility, to me, would open the floor to finding out more about Caminus, about all the Camiens and other off-planet NAILs, about Cybertron as it is, about characters like Wheeljack, who've been out for a while now - all of which I cannot see being resolved in three more issues.

Does that make sense?

I think this mini is already suffering from being overly hyped. We are one issue in and, in my opinion, it is getting too much praise. Honestly, I think the majority of people like it because it is a little different. They are bringing something a little different to the table with this book. Is the art fresh, sure. Is it a solid act 1, you bet. Is it a must buy for all transformer fans? I'm not on that ship just yet.

Well, 2/3 ain't bad. Just wait until the TOB comes out then.

Honestly, I agree that it was over hyped. But, I'm just glad to have TF fiction. I take it for what it is. And I enjoy it!

Yeah, very on the fence with the story as a whole. I like the city speaker concept and like the art (some panels more than others), but Windblade herself just doesn't seem like a very interesting protagonist.

I suspect sales will dictate her future appearances; where after the initial hype, Hasbro and IDW will tally their revenue and decide whether to feature her prominently or phase her out, and I suspect it'll be the latter and she'll be shunted over to one of the big two books as a supporting cast member after the fact.

Still withholding judgment on the series as a whole, but the first issue left me wanting. >:oP

It's kind of smart for them to do this. It's a great title for new readers to jump on as they will be learning right along with Windblade as to who is good and who is bad and how the status quo is now.

Have to say, Windblade has been a STUNNING comic. The stylized, very artful style was a happy surprise. Huge props to Sarah and the team. Art, color, composition, story have all been really stellar. I'll definitely be continuing with the title.

The characters have been refreshing and original. Story has immediately gotten my attention and left me wanting more — as Windblade is checking out the dark basement of Metroplex. Huge props.

I just really started reading them (the IDW) after a long absence and they are phenomenal. I heartily recommend them.
I have been into transformers since 1984.
While I love G1 I also love new innovations and takes on the characters.
I prefer official Hasbro releases of stuff for the most part
I'm not a huge fan of Japanese original Transformers media or designs.
It's easier for me to say which are my LEAST favorite toy lines: Beast Machines, Robots in Disguise.

It makes me all giddy! Although, Blurr's face was a little too 'O' shaped for me when he "spoke slowly", but I love the spacey feel the colors give the book.

I also find it disturbingly awesome how Starscream keeps getting uncomfortably close to Windblade. He's just so bad at being seductive...or is he actually just that good?

I have to say, the IDW have been hit as miss with me. While most of the limited series have been spot on amazing — art, story, characters, etc. — some of the main comic line has been off-putting for me. (Mostly the RID series.)

So much of the characterization is exactly opposite... almost like it's a deliberate (and cheap) flip flop:

Bumblebee: playful youth scout VS Autobot leader with an old man cane
Arcee: caring mother figure for humans VS vengeful assassin experiment
Perceptor: brilliant scientist VS sniper killer
Optimus: strong leader and father figure VS wussy unsure & shirks role and responsibility
Megatron: military minded dictator VS Op's bro and new Autobot recruit + freedom fighter in early Cybertron
Sunstreaker: vain dude VS headmaster drone army

I know it's their prerogative, but there has been so much flip-flopping I just have to roll my eyes at it. #-o

I also didn't like killing off a Constructicon. No Devastator combination now. Terrible decision.

I HAVE loved all they've done with various minor characters to develop them into new fan favorites. (Swerve, Whirl, Topspin, Twin Twist, Guzzle, Ironfist, Pyro, Overlord...)

There has been a lot of great stuff... enough to balance out the odd Robots in Disguise snafus... and leave a very positive impression of IDW. Definitely worth getting into, especially if you can pick and choose your books in the TPB.

A lot of what they have done is to purposely get away from the G1 typecast of 30 years ago. I'm glad to see them do it. I also have to say that your comparisons are awfully "black & white". The generalizations don't quite do justice to the characters. I'm not trying to be a prick here (I never try, it just happens naturally) because you did sum them up very succinctly, I just want the folks who maybe haven't delved into the IDW world quite yet to realize that there is some back story they need to catch up on as to why the characters are the way they are now as opposed to the G1-ish characters they may be familiar with. I'm sure folks will be quite shocked if they just dive in head first with no warning.

I have to say that I'll be quite interested in seeing where this series goes. It certainly is taking all of 'Screamers "charming" traits and amplifying them. (If he were any more of an ***hole, I might actually have to start taking notes on how it's done)
I can't wait for Starscream to make that one step too far, to say that one wrong word or do that one wrong deed that pushes Windblade just a hair past her breaking point. It will be epic indeed!

The more I read of MTMTE and Windblade, the more generic RiD feels. It's kind of like experiencing something that's perfectly 'OK' for a while, then being shown exactly how good it 'could' be from a fresh perspective.

There's nothing technically bad about RiD, but it is very standard comic book faire. The story boils down to robots punching each other, then drama, then more punching. I'm liking the character and flair of the other 2 series much more.

I think this preview has sold me on getting Windblade comics. I held off initially because it was just a 4 issue run but it seems really good. Been reading RiD and MtMtE the whole time and I am thinking the storyline in Windblade will continue in a regular series whether its called Windblade or not.

Amazon.com Pre-Order - IDW Transformers: Windblade TPB

Postby Va'al » Sun May 18, 2014 2:38 am

Motto: "Till All Are Pun!"
While we wait for this week's release of IDW Transformers: Windblade issue #2, Amazon.com have uploaded a listing for the collected trade paperback of the mini-series (for now) by Mairghread Scott and Sarah Stone. It will apparently be released on 14th October 2014, and is currently priced at $14.04, with 104 pages. A coincidence? Quite probably. There is no image as yet, so enjoy the four Sarah Stone covers once again below!

In the aftermath of Dark Cybertron, Windblade takes the planet by storm! But where did she come from - and what does her secret mean to the future of the Transformers?
