In another bout of iTunes preview magic, we have an initial look at the final issue of the mini-series crossing over two of the current IDW Hasbro licensed franchises - set 200 years before anything we're currently seeing in-universe - Rom vs Transformers: Shining Armor #5!

We start straight off with the Ultra Magnus/Dire Wraith hybrid, so be ready for some eldritch and (robo)body horror from artist Alex Milne - plus obvious spoilers if you're not caught up yet - and some Starscream schadenfreude for those of you into that sort of thing. Check the preview out below, and join the conversation as we wait the couple of weeks left until the book's release.

Bumblebee vs. Rom vs. Starscream vs. the Dire Wraiths! All alliances are off—this is a fight for survival! Torn between her Cybertronian heritage and her Solstar Knight upbringing, Stardrive takes control of her fate!

Thanks to iTunes, we have a new preview for the upcoming Transformers: Lost Light #11! Lost Light #11 picks up where #10 left off, serving as the middle chapter of the Mutineers Trilogy. We left off last issue with the reveal that there were many crewmembers who had been reduced to sparks, brains, and spines in engex containers, other crewmembers who were questioning the decision to go with the mutiny, some of those mentioned crewmembers stuck in a brain memory loop including the Protectobots, Thunderclash, and Mirage, and a Getaway that is far more ruthless and more dictatorish than when we previously saw him almost 2 years ago. This chapter starts with the mutiny recruiting story, with Getaway telling someone in Rung's office about how the process went down. While the person may be Rung, it is highly unlikely, and we are left wondering who he is really talking to.

Check out the 3 page preview below, and let us know what you think of these new pages in the comments section below!

Success? The crew of the Lost Light, led by the mutinous Getaway, is now only weeks away from completing their quest. But such remarkable progress comes at a price. Just how far is their new captain prepared to go to find Cyberutopia? Unfortunately for the likes of Riptide and First Aid, it turns out the answer is “very far indeed.”

Story

This review is not late, this is just ..strategy, in keeping with IDW's approach to releases. That's my story and I'm sticking to it. Also, this is the first fully double review for two comics that form a single story that I've done in a while, and for good reason: Optimus Prime and Transformers, the one-shots that mark the Cybertronian tie-ins to the First Strike event, are better seen as a coherent story (with some downsides), and is essentially the coda to the end of Revolutionaries.

Transformers News: Double Review: IDW Optimus Prime / Transformers First Strike #HasbroFirstStrike
You gotta specify a little

There are really two macro-story-threads running through the books, in the shadow (or light) of the events taking place on Cybertron during Ironblood/Colton's attack, and they both coalesce in the character of Centurion/Mike Power - perhaps one of the best 'retcons' we've seen in the TFverse at the hands of John Continuity Barber - and his sibling from another spark if you will, GB Blackrock/Sovereign.

Transformers News: Double Review: IDW Optimus Prime / Transformers First Strike #HasbroFirstStrike
Plus Action Man and ...Optimus?

If on one side they allow for a better exploration of the idea of hybrids, something that keeps coming up in this IDWverse of recent, and the identity of Centurion (complete with some time-hopping and merged memories), and the setting up of Kreiger's real identity and/or motives, on the other it lets down on the specific plot at hand that holds up the story proper.

Transformers News: Double Review: IDW Optimus Prime / Transformers First Strike #HasbroFirstStrike
Subtle

There are more thoughts on these two issues in the latest episode of the Twincast Podcast, but one more point I wanted to make refers to the developing interest between Arcee and one young Ian Noble (definitely not the boyfriend of Doctor X) - which not only does not feel forced, it segues nicely from later developments of Arcee's character in both OP ongoing series and Sins of the Wreckers, of all things.

Art

Working on the first part are Transformers veterans Guido Guidi and John Wycough, and I have to unfortunately admit, that the inks of the latter on the pencils of the former do not complement the visuals well, at all - as I had also noted in a previous issue on the same lines. Which is a shame, as there is some nice panelwork, and Thomas Teyowisonte Deer's colours are very well placed in providing a continuity with the Revolutionaries aesthetic.

Transformers News: Double Review: IDW Optimus Prime / Transformers First Strike #HasbroFirstStrike
Best Bot Buds!

Taken by itself, Priscilla Tramontano and Joana Lafuente's art for the second issue is better overall, and it does fit the way in which the script sets up the characters, but there are inconsistencies throughout the book and the two styles (Guidi and Tramontano) don't really pair up well for the story as a whole. Still, the colours are nicely in sync, even taken side by side.

Transformers News: Double Review: IDW Optimus Prime / Transformers First Strike #HasbroFirstStrike
Just.. gorgeous

The lettering continuity is no issue at all, as not only it's the same letterer on both, but we're talking once more about Tom B. Long, and I've spent many a word praising his work on the IDW books. I do not need to add much, just enjoy it, will you? All the cover variants can be seen, with credit, in our Comics Database here and here, plus you can enjoy the one by Guido Guidi as thumbnail for this review, too.

Thoughts
Spoilerish ahead

These two books, and their story were inevitably hindered again by the issues in IDW's release and scheduling, meaning that the two books would've prepared more for the ending of First Strike (Kreiger in particular, a big name in both Revolutionaries and Centurion's personal story here), set a parallel stage, and been made less redundant (OP in particular) if they had come out when they were supposed to rather than when they did. I cannot ignore that, I'm afraid; though it doesn't reflect on the creative teams, it does impact the enjoyment of the story.

Transformers News: Double Review: IDW Optimus Prime / Transformers First Strike #HasbroFirstStrike
..aaand there's robomance

When I started this, I pointed out that the tie-in is essentially a Revolutionaries story - and I stand by that, with the disclaimer that they are probably the best executed actually tying-in of all the books of this ilk, and not just the final issues of the previous series, or the prologues to the next one (looking at all of you, GI Joe, MASK, Rom, Micronauts). It uses the characters well, and setting the action as parallel to the main First Strike story allows to fill in some blanks left by that story, too, along with having some truly excellent interactions that fit well every single character in the book, Arcee above all.

A new press release from IDW Publishing brings us news of some reshuffling over at the company behind pretty much all major Transformers fiction from the past decade, with current President and COO Greg Goldstein being promoted to Publisher.

The news that affects us more directly however, as Transformers fans and Hasbro Universe (reluctant?) inhabitants, is that as a result, two household names are assuming new roles too: Chris Ryall and David Hedgecock! Ryall, current CCO, is returning to his Editor in Chief disguise - aka the Chrischarger of the days in the -ations letter pages (just in time for another coming of All Hail Megatron); Hedgecock, one of the people behind the Hasbro Universe Revolution and First Strike shenanigans, will assume the mantle of Associate Publisher; both can be heard in episode 170 of the Twincast Podcast too, right here! Read on below for more.

Chris Ryall and David Hedgecock Receive Expanded Roles

San Diego, CA (November 14, 2017) – Today IDW Publishing is pleased to announce the promotion of Greg Goldstein to Publisher effective immediately, as well as other staff changes.

“As company President, Greg has proven to be an invaluable asset to IDW and continues to put his heart and savvy into a company that is near and dear to me,” said Ted Adams, CEO of IDW Media Holdings. “His passion coupled with his intimate knowledge of the business will serve him well as head of publishing.”

Adams, who co-founded IDW Publishing, will continue as CEO of the parent company of IDW Media Holdings, which in addition to IDW Publishing, also includes IDW Entertainment and CTM Media Group as its subsidiaries. In addition to his continued management of IDW Media Holdings, he will be pursuing new business opportunities across the three divisions.

IDW will also see other shifts take place within its editorial staff. Chief Creative Officer Chris Ryall will once again assume the role Editor-in-Chief, too, working directly with the editorial department in continuing to advance the strategic and tactical abilities of the group. Additionally, David Hedgecock will take on the newly created role of Associate Publisher, further developing the company’s strategic goals by synergizing processes throughout the entire publishing division.

“I could not be more honored that Ted has put his trust in me to continue guiding the direction of IDW’s future in this expanded role,” said Goldstein. “Equally, I have tremendous faith in Chris, David, and the rest of the IDW team to help lead us to even greater success.”

In addition to adding Publisher to his title, Goldstein, who joined IDW in 2008 as Chief Operating Officer, will also retain the title of President.

Let us take you back to 2008, when the -ation storylines (including Stormbringer) came to a sudden end, finding a conclusion of sorts in Maximum Dinobots, to make way for the first big IDW Transformers 'event': All Hail Megatron.

Almost ten years later, we find ourselves looking at the opening pages of what is still seen as a divisive piece of work in the IDWverse (mostly for the reasons pointed out above, and others to do with pacing and character writing) - one that has made its way to Japanese audiences not that long ago, as seen here - in a new paperback collected edition, the same as the Complete All Hail Megatron hardback we have seen before. For those of you wishing to read the story but not willing to own the hardback copy, this week's release may be the book for you!

Transformers: The Complete All Hail Megatron TP
Rejoice, Decepticon brethren! The pretender, Optimus, and his treacherous Autobots are defeated, Earth is all but defenseless, and the time for conquest is at hand!

After at last succeeding in defeating the Autobots, the Decepticons set about ruling our planet with an iron fist. Their forces invade and control New York and, before long, they manage to cripple the United States. It's a war between the U.S. armed forces and a giant species of technologically advanced killing machines--a war that suddenly becomes incredibly one-sided! Meanwhile, the battered and broken Autobots struggle to survive a forced exile on their dead homeworld of Cybertron. Defeated by to an unknown traitor in their midst, the Autobots sturggle to maintain their trust and unity... and nothing short of a miracle will save them from utter extinction!

Collects All Hail Megatron #1-16, as well as Transformers Spotlight: Blurr, Transformers Spotlight: Jazz, Transformers Spotlight: Cliffjumper, Transformers Spotlight: Drift, and Transformers Spotlight: Metroplex.

Three months ago, we saw art of upcoming figures, pins and keychains based on the recent-ish (2014-2016) Transformers vs GI Joe comics. Earlier this month, there were final images of the pins, and two versions of a 7-inch Cobra Commander vinyl figure. And now, thanks to some preorder listings on ToyWiz, we have some more final images to share of the vinyl figures themselves!

The lineup of 18 figures includes Transformers regulars Optimus Prime, Bumblebee, Megatron, Starscream, Shockwave, Soundwave, Wheeljack and two different colorations of dino-mode Grimlock - all based to some degree or another on their appearances in the comic series. Also present from the GI Joe side of things are characters like Cobra Commander, Scarlett, Snake Eyes, Destro, Baroness and more! The greenish Optimus Prime figure seen in the original images also makes a reappearance in a slightly transparent greenish-white hue, all but confirming that it will be a glow-in-the-dark variant.

And to round things off, from another ToyWiz preorder we also have final pictures of the 7-inch Megatron vinyl figure, seen from the front, back and in-package too! He appears much the same as the smaller Megatron seeing release with the others, aside from an actual chain for his energy mace, a removable Grimlock-head hand-puppet (which may or may not be removable on the smaller version) and perhaps a slightly more pouty expression.

All of these figures are set to release on December 2017, according to their ToyWiz listings. With that date fast approaching, which of these figures catch your eye the most? Are you more interested in the smaller Megatron or the 7" version - or both? Let us know your thoughts!

Also coming to us from Seibertronian Sunstar (via the Twitter account of IDW assistant editor David Mariotte), we got a sneak peak into IDW's upcoming miniseries Transformers vs Visionaries! It was kind of snuck into the larger panel from the 'Till All Are One annual we reported on here, in the same tweet, but we get a couple of panels featuring Kup, Ironhide, and two of the Visionaries themselves! This series will be written by Magdalene Visaggio and art will be provided by Fico Ossio, who drew the Revolutionaries series and also, the first issue of Miconauts. The first issue of Transformers vs. Visionaries should be coming out next month!

Thanks to fellow Seibertronian Sunstar we have our first glimpse at the eagerly anticipated 'Till All Are One Annual! When the series ended earlier this year, at writer Mairghread Scott's discretion, many fans of the IDW Transformers universe were very disappointed at the prospect of no more stories about the Cybertron-based cast; some had even started saying that TAAO was their favorite of the ongoing Transformer titles, due to the creative team of Scott, Sara Pitre-Durocher, Joana Lafuente and Tom Long putting out such consistently engaging work.

Via the Twitter account of David Mariotte at IDW, we have a one-panel tweet featuring everyone's favorite reporting duo, Circuit and Longtooth, though they're about to be interrupted by Windblade.

Also featured is a single panel of the Universe's favorite punching bag, Waspinator, who doesn't look too happy.
