Recently in the news there has been a lot of talk of lead paint contaminations, recalls and voluntary recalls of certain toys from China. This has mainly effected the Mattel company whose main toy lines are Barbie, Hot Wheels, Fisher Price and many more. As this threat of lead paint is on many consumers minds, CEO of Hasbro Al Verrecchia has issued a statement on Hasbro.com. Mr. Verrecchia states Hasbro's commitment to quality products, and what Hasbro does to ensure the safety of all it;s products.

Letter from Al Verrecchia
Statement on Toy Safety From Hasbro's Chief Executive Officer

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

As the President and Chief Executive Officer of Hasbro, no issue is more important to me than the safety of our toys and of the children who enjoy them.

At Hasbro, we are proud that our own safety standards meet or exceed all federal regulations and that we set the highest standards for our own factories as well as our vendors wherever they may be located, including China. We are also proud that none of our toys or games was affected by the recent recalls related to lead paint.

To ensure compliance with our high standards, Hasbro requires tests and quality control checks at multiple stages of the manufacturing process. These procedures, which have been in place for many years, have always included - and continue to include - independent, third-party testing of our products.

Specific to the issue of lead paint: paints used on Hasbro products are tested and inspected before application on our products. We test the same paints during various stages of production, including on finished product as it leaves the production line and before it gets shipped.

In an abundance of caution, we are taking additional steps as part of our thorough proprietary safety procedures to confirm that our procedures are being adhered to and that we are doing everything possible to make the safest toys for your children. For example, we have increased the frequency of our product testing. We have also stepped up inspections of all of our products both in our company-owned plants in the United States and Ireland, as well as our vendors in China, and we will continue to make more frequent, unannounced visits.

Overseeing this effort is a team of full-time Hasbro quality control engineers and inspectors based in Hong Kong and China. These employees, who are part of Hasbro's U.S.-based global quality assurance team, are often present on the factory floors of our vendors to confirm the quality and safety of our products.

We hope this gives you a better understanding of Hasbro's quality control programs and the many steps we take to ensure the safety of our toys so that you can continue to purchase them with confidence. While I can't guarantee that a recall won't ever happen, I can promise that we are taking every possible precaution. What I can say, however, is that if an issue of product safety should arise, we will address it quickly, openly and decisively.

I would also like you to know that we maintain a strong working relationship with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. Our in-house product safety experts interact regularly with CPSC officials to share information regarding our products and practices.

We continue to take the safety of our children - mine and yours - very seriously. That's my commitment to you - as a CEO, as a parent, and as a grandparent.

Sincerely,

Al Verrecchia
Chief Executive Officer

Hasbro Licensing Division Teams with Best-in-Class Publishers to Reach the Readers with More Than 25 Hasbro Brands Imprinted on 55 Million Titles Across All Publishing Formats

PAWTUCKET, R.I.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--HPG, the licensing division of Hasbro, Inc. (NYSE:HAS), has signed a broad array of licensing deals with top tier global publishers that have significantly expanded Hasbro’s already robust publishing program, converting more than 25 Hasbro game and toy brands, such as LITTLEST PET SHOP, TRANSFORMERS, PLAYSKOOL and MONOPOLY, onto 55 million book titles for adults and children since 2001. These new deals, paired with Hasbro’s many existing agreements, will begin to fill retail shelves worldwide this fall with an assortment of books, from novels to comic books and activity sets.

“We set an aggressive goal for ourselves four years ago to significantly expand our publishing program with a global focus and to place Hasbro brands in many locations where books are sold,” said Tom Klusaritz, vice president of licensing and retail development for HPG. “Through agreements with Sterling Publishing, Scholastic, HarperCollins, Random House, IDW and others we are certainly on our way to bringing Hasbro brands to consumers in a meaningful way through various publishing formats, from puzzle and trivia books to novels, comics and parenting guides.

HASBRO OFFERS FUN & LEARNING FOR THE ENTIRE FAMILY

HPG has inked a five-year deal with Sterling Publishing, under which the preeminent games book publisher will release up to 24 puzzle and trivia books per year based on 22 Hasbro toy and game brands. To launch the program, Sterling will release 14 titles this fall with another 12 titles due in spring 2008. Some of the brands in this global agreement that cover the English-speaking countries include: MONOPOLY, TRIVIAL PURSUIT, BOGGLE, YAHTZEE, and PLAY-DOH.

In a pending deal with Simon & Schuster, the company would bring PLAYSKOOL-branded children’s books to market in 2008. The pending agreement would build upon the successful summer 2007 launch of four parenting guides from Sourcebooks, Inc. In addition to strong placement in the U.S. market, the PLAYSKOOL Parenting Guides are being translated into multiple languages for a variety of territories. Sourcebooks will continue to expand the PLAYSKOOL Parenting Guides line, with three new titles available in 6,500 retail outlets throughout the U.S. in fall 2007 with an additional two titles planned for spring 2008.

KIDS ‘HIT THE BOOKS’ WITH TRANSFORMERS AND LITTLEST PET SHOP

The TRANSFORMERS and LITTLEST PET SHOP brands have both achieved great success on the bookshelf. The LITTLEST PET SHOP property’s ranking as one of the fastest growing brands among girls in the toy industry and the TRANSFORMERS movie’s blockbuster success at the box office this summer have translated into similar successes for publishers. TRANSFORMERS: The Junior Novel by HarperCollins enjoyed seven weeks on The New York Times Best Seller List, peaking as high as No. 5, as well as four weeks on USA Today’s Top 150 Best Sellers. For the older fans, TRANSFORMERS by Alan Dean Foster of Del Rey, also spent four weeks on USA Today’s Top 150 Best Sellers, and was a top ten title in the Sci-Fi genre for two months.

For the comic fan, IDW Publishing has committed to publishing multiple TRANSFORMERS movie-based comic book series over the next two years including more than 10 titles alone in 2007. The Target-exclusive TRANSFORMERS movie prequel from IDW was one of the highest performing movie titles at the mass merchant retailer in summer 2007.

On the international front, HarperCollins and Dorling Kindersley will bring 10 TRANSFORMERS titles to market in the U.K., and Titan will publish more than a dozen TRANSFORMERS Movie Magazines throughout Europe. Additional licensees including Editions Hemma, Pocket Jeunesse, New Links, Paramon Ediciones and Grupo SM are working on TRANSFORMERS movie-related titles and Norma and Panini Comics are adapting the IDW-developed comic books for various international markets.

The LITTLEST PET SHOP property has a groundswell of support behind it with several new publishing deals covering multiple titles and activity kits that will roll out in 2007 and 2008.

Scholastic Publishing has inked a three-year deal to publish a wide variety of books under the LITTLEST PET SHOP brand. Launched in fall 2006 with three titles, the program has expanded with five new titles in spring 2007, and eight additional titles shipping in fall 2007. The agreement includes novelty, activity, sticker and handbooks that will continue to roll out through 2008 and are targeted at 6- to- 9-year-old girls. Reader’s Digest is also on board to publish three novelty formats based on the LITTLEST PET SHOP brand, and ASL Publishing has tentatively agreed to develop activity kits for holiday 2007. Meantime, Bendon Publishing has released four color activity titles and is slated to publish an additional four LITTLEST PET SHOP-themed color activity books, which will be available this fall. Additional color activity and novelty books are in the works and will hit store shelves in spring 2008. Phidal Publishing, Inc. also plans to release two books in 2008 with additional titles to follow. In the U.K., a deal is pending with Penguin Group to bring to market sticker, activity and story books in 2008.

MY LITTLE PONY AND TONKA ENTERTAIN MILLIONS OF YOUNG CHILDREN AROUND THE GLOBE

Hasbro’s MY LITTLE PONY and TONKA brands remain strong on bookshelves as well. Since its re-launch in 2003, the MY LITTLE PONY brand has sold more than 18 million books in the U.S. Internationally, two million MY LITTLE PONY books have been sold throughout Europe through a variety of publishing agreements with Egmont, Big Balloon, Editions Hemma, Mon Journal, Saldana, Edicart, New Links, and Modern Times. The TONKA publishing program also continues to grow, and by year-end 2007, there will be close to 100 titles in print in a variety of formats from board and activity books to young readers and flash cards.

FANTASY-BASED BOOKS AND COMICS CONTINUE TO BE BIG SELLERS

Based on Hasbro’s Wizard of the Coast properties, HPG has enlisted a team of publishers to bring the fantasy-based characters, environments and adventures to life on novel and comic book pages. A Dungeons & Dragons comic book series from Devil’s Due is already in the U.S. market, while Compupress, Norma and 25 Editions will be distributing the series throughout Europe. An additional 280 novels are in-the-works across multiple international regions by Timun Mas, Altaya, Aremenia, Fleuve Noir and Bibliotheque Interdite, and Anubis.

Bombus distinguendus has found some good news on the superherohype website.

It appears that Transformers 2 has had it's Writers Confirmed Sourced from: The Hollywood Reporter

Screenwriter Ehren Kruger and the writing team of Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci are in talks to team to write the screenplay for DreamWorks/Paramount's Transformers 2, says The Hollywood Reporter.

Director Michael Bay, star Shia LaBeouf and producers Tom DeSanto, Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Don Murphy are back in their respective chairs, as is executive producer Steven Spielberg.

The trade adds that the teaming of A-listers to write such a huge project might be an industry first and could have been necessary because Kurtzman and Orci -- who wrote first movie -- also are busy writing J.J. Abrams' Star Trek movie for Paramount and producing Eagle Eye for DreamWorks.

The three writers are also working together on Nightlife, a DreamWorks serial-killer project that sees Kruger adapting a Thomas Perry novel, with Kurtzman and Orci producing along with Neal Moritz. Kruger also adapted the Stephen King novel "The Talisman," which Spielberg is exec producing for TNT.

Kruger met with Bay and Hasbro president Brian Goldner and impressed the duo with his knowledge of the "Transformers" mythology.

The Transformers saga erupts in Devastation

IDW Publishing’s latest Transformers title chronicles the third chapter in the series about the hidden war between the Autobots and the Decepticons.

San Diego, CA (September 6, 2007)—The Transformers’ secret war on Earth continues in IDW Publishing’s latest blockbuster, The Transformers: Devastation, the first issue of which hits comics shops in September. In Devastation, factions on Earth launch into bold and decisive action. With both the Machination and Skywatch poised to strike, both with Cybertronian technology and inside knowledge of the Transformers, the Autobots have no choice but to retreat. But the arrival on Earth of the Decepticon living super-weapon Sixshot promises only one thing: Devastation.

“We’ve been telling an ongoing saga, first with Infiltration, then with Escalation,” says Chris Ryall, publisher and editor-in-chief of IDW Publishing. “This continues the epic that we started a year and a half ago. This is where plot points and characters converge, where everything expands and the story blows up more than ever before.”

Devastation pulls in a range of characters, including those who appeared only in previous Transformer spotlight issues. Characters like Hot Rod and Sixshot both play major roles in Devastation, and fans will discover the startling fate of Hunter, one of the epic’s central human characters.

Devastation, like Infiltration and Escalation, features story and script by veteran Transformers writer Simon Furman, with art by fan-favorite E.J. Su.

In Infiltration, the Autobots struggled to prevent an Armageddon on Earth instigated by Decepticon, with the planet’s secret mechanical defenders relying on the unlikely aid of three misfit human allies. In Escalation, Optimus Prime and the Autobots confronted the impending menaces Megatron and Ore-13, only to see the Machination strike—with shocking and tragic consequences. And now, in the third series, those consequences go from dire… to devastating.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Creators of Transformers: Beast Wars: The Gathering Are Back!

IDW Publishing to release a new Beast Wars miniseries by Furman and Figueroa, in addition to an all-encompassing Beast Wars Sourcebook

San Diego, CA (August 14, 2007)—Transformers: Beast Wars fans have a lot to celebrate this month. IDW Publishing will publish a follow-up to the first-ever Beast Wars miniseries, “The Gathering,” by the same fan-favorite creators. In addition, IDW Publishing is unveiling the first issue of a long-requested, comprehensive character guide to all Beast Wars characters.

Furman and Figueroa Collaborate on Beast Wars: The Ascending

Writer Simon Furman and artist Don Figueroa have teamed up again to follow-up their acclaimed Transformers: Beast Wars: The Gathering miniseries. This next chapter will be a four-part miniseries entitled Transformers: Beast Wars: The Ascending. The previous miniseries launched in early 2006 as a celebration of the 10th anniversary of the Beast Wars animated series, and left fans clamoring for more.

“The re-pairing of this beloved writer and artist is exactly what fans have been wanting to see,” said Chris Ryall, editor-in-chief and publisher of IDW Publishing. Since their first Beast Wars collaboration, “there has been a steady stream of requests for the return of these fan-favorites,” said Ryall. “The demand for this pairing has just grown over time. And this comic book has even more appeal because people know what they are in for.”

The Ascending spirals out of events in The Gathering. Magmatron, a disembodied entity that exists out of time and space, is witness to Cybertron’s unchecked descent into chaos and madness—all a prelude to its complete and utter destruction. Powerless to directly affect this terrifying apocalypse, Magmatron’s last desperate recourse is to try and bring his greatest enemy, Razorbeast, together with fellow Maximals Lio Convoy and the pack.

Hitting comic stores in August, The Ascending #1 is the first chapter of this new four-part miniseries.

Transformers: Beast Wars Sourcebook Released

Also from IDW Publishing, Furman has teamed with Ben Yee, a consultant for the Beast Wars TV series, to present an all-encompassing, unifying resource about Beast Wars. From Air Hammer to Wolfang, the Sourcebook highlights the characters, worlds and technology from all generations and incarnations of Beast Wars. The Sourcebook details who each character is, what side they are on and what their abilities are. It features all-new art from a host of the greatest Transformers artists, including Don Figueroa, Guido Guidi, James Raiz, Nick Roche and Rob Ruffolo, as well as many more. This special series will be comprised of four bi-monthly, 48-page, ad-free editions.
