Courtesy of the deviantART accounts of colorist Josh Burcham and artist Guido Guidi we have retailer incentive cover for IDW's upcoming Transformers: Regeneration #81 and "Dinobot Month" cover for #82. The issue 81 retailer incentive cover features retro style art by Geoff Senior. Take a look below.

Thats right folks! Geoff Senior is back! [for a cover...but hey! the important thing is he's back!]

So anyways, this was shown off at Botcon this last weekend [photos of it have cropped up here and there on the web] and I figured i'd give you guys a little clearer look

This cover was truly momentous for me. Geoff Senior is hands down my favorite artist to ever draw Transformers. EVAR. and he's been a huge inspiration/influence on my own drawing style as well

So its a pretty big deal to me being able to color this cover!

After getting it i pondered ever so briefly about tackling it just about how i would any other piece of TF art i do but just felt that going that route wouldnt feel right. I had to go old school. So I busted out my 80s Marvel/DC color palettes i've run across online and colored this bad boy up. [and that yellow background! totally helps sell the feel i wanted for this too. Its so 80s xD]

So anyways! Thats my story! This is our cover! And I hope you guys all check out Regeneration One when it hits [Free comic book day is when the "first" book comes out. Nab that up and get yourself up to speed for the proper release!]

Special TFRG1 #82 "retro" cover* for the IDW's "Dinobots month".
Since it has been publicly revealed at the Botcon IDW's panel (and throught various reporting fansites) it should be safe to post it here too.

Fineliners/markers on art board, done on '80 retro style.
More to come!

Wondering why Grimlock was absent from the Transformers: Robots in Disguise #8 cover we posted earlier today? It's because he's right here on the cover of Transformers: More Than Meets The Eye #8! All part of IDW's Dinobot month, the team will be divided between the two ongoing titles. Alex Milne updated his deviantART account with the cover to issue 8 mirrored below.

so this image was shown off at botcon this past weekend so i figured it would be alright to show it off here. hopefully get a better look at it
this is the cover to MTMTE issue 8, and yes it features Grimlock
i guess now we finally get to find out what happened to him since last we saw him which i think was in maximum dinobots?
i had a lot of fun with this cover
it has a batman feel to it, which i did not intend until after i stated placing in the shadows and i thought, why not go pretty heavy on the shadows like in the batman comics i read. this was the result, and i like how it turned out
got to work with Joana on this cover. when we were talking about it, i noticed that this was going to be out first cover together that wasn't part of the movie line. i thought that was pretty cool.
the bots in the foreground don't look to happy. i wonder if they know whats about to happen???
enjoy

It was revealed during IDW's BotCon panel that July would be Dinobot and Decepticon month. Now artist Macelo Matere has revealed the line art for the interconnected retail exclusive covers for July's Transformers: MTME #7 and Transformer: RID #7. They noted that just because Megatron is featured in the cover art is not an indication that he is back. Check out the art below.

Since IDW showed these covers during their panel at Botcon last weekend, I think there's no problem to show it here!

Do you like Decepticons? Dinobots so here we go!

During IDW's BotCon 2012 panel it was revealed that fan favorite and Hall of Fame contender Sky-Byte would be joining the cast of Transformers: Robots in Disguise Ongoing starting in issue #5. Artist Ardrew Griffith has revealed the character's redesign for the series via UK fansite Full Metal Hero. Check out the mirrored images below.

Thought I'd give you guys another exclusive.

I was told this was OK to post online since his image is floating around the web now anyway. This is Sky-Byte's official design for IDW as he's appearing in RID, staring in issue 5.

He's largely based on his original toy, though the transformation is a little different than originally. For example, his shark head now becomes his chest instead of a "faux"-shark face on his chest. And I added painted teeth on his shark face like you'd see on vintage fighter planes.

Basically, his alt-mode is some sort of space shark. Who is to say something that looks like a flying shark couldn't have evolved on some planet somewhere? Makes no less sense that dinosaurs in space, eh?

The official Transformers facebook page has posted the Creator Commentary for Transformers: Robots in Disguise Ongoing #4 with insights on the first five pages by John Barber, Andrew Griffith, and Josh Perez. Check it out below:

Image

PAGE 1. Swindle is his usual self while Dirge appears to be finding his feet. We get the sense that maybe the Decepticons are really up to something bad. You think we’re getting to know them again as the bad guys here?

JOHN BARBER: Well, they’re kinda the bad guys, yeah. I mean, they don’t see themselves as the villains of the story, but that doesn’t make them not villains. However, these guys, they’re really trying to get by—especially Dirge. He just wants to move on with life. I think Swindle was a character that writer Mike Costa nailed in the last run of the book, before we came on, so I kinda wanted to have Swindle looking back at the days of him going toe-to-toe with Prowl and Ultra Magnus (during Transformers Vol. 6: Police Action) as the glory days; the best it ever got for him. He just fills the air with dialog—grand schemes, half-thought-through philosophies—and Dirge just wants to do his job and get on with his life.

ANDREW GRIFFITH: For my part, I just loved the idea that Swindle is shooting off his mouth and aggrandizing to the best of his ability, all the while carrying around a full basket and doing absolutely zero work. We've all known that guy. I agree that Swindle was one of the best characters during Costa's run, and I'm glad to see John picking up where he left off. Fans are always glad to see Swindle.

JOSH PEREZ: Can I mention how much I love how Andrew drew Swindle on this page? Something about how he’s drawn makes him look so nosey—like he’s always gonna be up in your bid’nis with opinions and stuff. I tried to make him look extra nosey and “annoying” (in the best way possible) with how I rendered his eyes. I’m in love with all of Swindle’s dialogue.

Image

PAGE 2. A dead Decepticon with a Decepticon’s flag in it. Obviously some things haven’t changed but Dirge wasn’t expecting to see who he is seeing off panel.

JOHN BARBER: Yeah—well, Dirge wasn’t expecting to see any of that. Especially who he saw. Also, I became super-paranoid after we sent this out to the printer: “Devisive” is a pun, not a typo. You’ll see what we’re going for on page 6.

ANDREW GRIFFITH: I just hope to have portrayed the emotion I was going for on Dirge's face. This poor guy gets no luck. All he wants is to be left alone, and here he is stumbling upon a murder, and suddenly he's surprised by the likely assassin. What’s next for poor Dirge??

JOSH PEREZ: Ha ha—oh, man… poor Dirge…

Image

PAGE 3. Starscream continues to preach politics and Prowl obviously doesn’t believe him. Do you think these two can ever put the past behind them and move on in rebuilding Cybertron?

JOHN BARBER: I know the answer to that question, but I won’t tell! Starscream is fighting on a new battlefield and he’s proving he’s better equipped at it than Bumblebee anticipated.

ANDREW GRIFFITH: The question in my mind is, do either of them honestly even WANT to move on? I know Starscream is adept at taking advantage of the new status quo, but I like to imagine that whenever Prowl's around Starscream he's always just desperately wanting to smack him! If only there weren't so many NAILs around and such a delicate political balance to uphold.

JOSH PEREZ: I really think there’s too much blood spilled between both sides for Prowl to really trust a Decepticon again. I really feel frustrated for Bee here! Starscream is just saying things before checking them over with everyone else. He’s promising Cybertron a pizza party and Bee never agreed to it! What was the question again? Will Cybertron ever have a Pizza Party?

Image

PAGE 4. Prowl looks like he may be regretting some of the things he has already done but always believes he is doing the right thing. Do you think he even knows where that fine line is between right and wrong anymore?

JOHN BARBER: That’s the million-dollar question, isn’t it? Over the course of Mike’s run writing the book, Prowl sort of mellowed… but he got a pretty bad jolt at the end. And now he’s dealing with a new situation on Cybertron… it’s a tough time for ol’ Prowl. We get an indication here that he didn’t exactly order Ratbat’s murder… but how much of that is his conscience and how much is the truth is… well, that’s the question. I love making Andrew draw these Arcee and Prowl conversations. “Here’s an 8-panel page—good luck” I say to him. And he nails it with this. How do you get a giant image on an 8-panel page? And look at the emotion there. Arcee on panel 4, and Prowl look on panel 6. Amazing.

ANDREW GRIFFITH: Thanks, John. It's certainly a challenge to find a new way to stage a scene that we've seen several variations of already. Yeah, Prowl is one of the big mysteries of this book. Just what is going on in that cold, calculating processor of his and where does he draw the line? Do the ends really justify the means?

JOSH PEREZ: I really like the relationship between Prowl and Arcee. Arcee is totally who Prowl WOULD be if he wasn’t Regulationstron, to me anyway. I feel like her presence kind of keeps his mind in check—despite of all the craziness he’s been through so far. You really start to feel bad for Prowl; he is totally gonna snap from all the pressure he’s putting on himself.

Image

PAGE 5. The question becomes who killed the Decepticon from page 2 and why. And we’re venturing deeper into the bowls of Cybertron. Keeping more of a sense of what the world is like. Are there are any plans to literally get under the skin of this world as well as the volatile situation itself?

JOHN BARBER: Yes, absolutely. Not to keep you in suspense—we’re back out in the nearby wilderness next issue—but issues 8 and 9 really delve into what’s going on in the deep, creepy parts of the world. For now, though—we’ve got a more immediate problem to deal with. I wonder how long it’ll take Prowl to solve the mystery? I wanted to do a Prowl police procedural from day one… and a Prowl police procedural is a pretty different animal, in my mind, anyway, than most police procedurals…

ANDREW GRIFFITH: I just think it's great to see some of the infrastructure of this new Iacon being established on Cybertron. On page 1 it's (hopefully) clear the Constructicons are still building this waste disposal area as the Decepticons are starting to go about their days with jobs in the new facilities. It's great to see the lives of these ’bots fleshed out a bit more than we've seen in the past and see what's "behind the walls." In the past we've seen very little of Cybertronian culture outside of war, and RID gives us an opportunity to see some of that.

JOSH PEREZ: I certainly look forward to diving deeper into Cybertron! But lemme tell y’all—I REALLY love coloring Blurr. This is the first time I get to really work with him this much, and there is just something so satisfying to laying down his flats. Also, panel 3; just look at how Andrew drew Sideswipe. That had me cracking up for a little bit. Poor Swipe’s TOTALLY uninterested in Prowl’s assignment for him.

The Universe of the Transformers is vast, and populated by many characters. Their universe is a large tapestry, made up of the stories and points of view of countless experiences that serve the larger whole.

These are some of those stories. This is:

Bad Cop/Worse Cop

BIG SPOILERS AHEAD!

So, here is it, Robots in Disguise issue 4, the comic that is currently dividing the Transformers readership.

RiD has some big boots to fill. More than Meets the Eye is a great comic; light hearted, colourful and fast paced and Autocracy is beautifully rendered, focuses on the franchise's most famous characters and has a story that we all know the conclusion to, so it falls to RiD to be the bigger of the three and bring new stories that are grittier, darker and more involving and this is not an easy thing to do when your subject matter is giant shape-changing space robots, especially with such limited scope.

Image
Because that has always worked so well in the past for the 'cons, eh Swindle?

Unfortunately this leaves little room for middle ground, and whilst I already know many will disagree with me on this, it's a good effort but for me it just isn’t working. In the past, Prowl has previously been depicted as a fan favourite’s character, with honour and integrity working from behind the scenes as the manipulator, not afraid to go behind people's backs to do what must to get the job done. Spotlight: Kup and AHM:15 are amongst the best examples of this, even if the aftermath wasn’t quite what everyone expected (See Infestation: Transformers #2). Here, the pressures of securing an entire rebuilt planet seem to have got to him, and in his pursuit of the Autobot philosophy any kind of honour has been stripped away leaving just the oft referred to ‘cold and calculating’ part of his personality which just ceases to make him the same likeable character, and Arcee’s influence throughout just appears to make it worse in her role of 'secret enforcer'.

Image
Born to be a kindergarten teacher

Art wise, my reservations from the last issue continue. Cybertron herself is crisp and clear but character detail once again overwhelms us one minute and is gone the next, and some character updates stand out from their other 80s-looking peers but for all the wrong reasons. Starscream (and his type) is a prime example, but the one thing that confuses me the most is that one section of the Seekers has lost its genre-defining lithe shape that invoked speed and manoeuvrability in favour of this bulkier almost movie-style physique, whilst Dirge – the last remaining Conehead - retains an older-style (possibly due to his early expulsion from Earth) but looks so much better for it, probably up there as one of my favourite Seeker designs. Why the different body types? Where’s the consistency? Adding to the confusion, Bombshell and the Constructicons all look near cartoon-perfect. And then of course there is Arcee... I’ll just let you decide on her amongst yourselves, my opinion is already out there and this does little to change it.

Image
And the voice of Prowl's conscience is a psychotic
pink robot. This can only end well.

Aside from my misgivings about the Prowl/Arcee dynamic and the art, the writing for this issue is still good. Barber has taken a world without the easy options of Prime, Megatron, Magnus and even Rodimus to solve the its ills and woven an involving and complex story and really grasped Prowl as a lead in this (still) dysfunctional government making pre-emptive decisions in the name of Cybertron security, even if it does take him in a very different direction, but it does feel a little heavy handed at times. The premise for this story – Bombshell seeding chaos into the Decepticon ranks as the planet becomes more and more divided - is engrossing, a character with an exceptional skill is finally being put to use in a well thought out and effective way, but the ending is blunt and seems a waste of such potential just to showcase this new 'Prowl' archetype even further.

Image
And cue the Benny Hill theme tune...

This issue had the potential to be great noir-style detective story or a bad cop/good cop action epic and falls short on both, mainly depicting Prowl on a murderous rampage meltdown and for many this will make him a thoroughly unlikeable character. One must wonder where they are planning on taking this, especially with the effective removal of a well-loved Decepticon group, and if there will be any 'bad guys' left in the only comic of the two ongoings that fully involves characters that the purple-badge wearing fans have any interest in as Barber boldly wields the machete of character death with reckless abandon.

Image
Champion bedside manner too. This guy is a true hero!

Fans of the bigger picture will appreciate this comic more than others, but with no clear story mapped out by the 4th issue, RiD is becoming an increasingly difficult read. Pick it up for the well scripted action scenes and enlightening character interactions, but be wary, whilst this is still of a higher standard than some of IDW’s previous runs, it is also still the weakest of the three series available.
