Heck of a mixed set.

Like Son Goku in a permanent Super Saiya-Jin form, making it a new standard form (he tried that during the Cell Games saga). Not bad, but...
Does anybody think the set has been rather predictable this year?

I'm in the same boat. already didn't want Ferak, and Cannonball and Devcon are nice and all, but not that fantastic. Can't imagine it'll be easy enough to sell Ferak and Gingerai for a high enough price to make it worthwhile buying the set, so I'll probably pass and hope to get Scorponok for only one kidney.

I'm interested to see what the non-box set exclusives are. 2 out of 5 on the Box set.

Sure, we just need to photoshop some on Black Optimus Prime:

I think this will be produced in too few numbers to justify them coming up with a trailer for it, even if it would be just a redeco. I guess it depends how well the set sells and what the 2ndary market for this figure will be like.

Even though it's Ginrai, I think Prime (the character) collectors will be all over it. I can see this being a $200 figure within a year or two, same goes for Scorponok. I don't think the rest of the set will appreciate all that much. Devcon a little, maybe.

Sure is. Fire Guts God Ginrai, an e-Hobby release. In red and orange to represent his ultimate Fire Guts attack, enveloped in flames of BURNING JUSTICE.

But Ginrai was the lead character (once he was introduced, that is). He was always around (after his debut).Rodimus Prime wrote:Oh. Duh. Totally drew a blank on that 1. I knew of the character in Masterforce, but forgot they actually made a toy for him. He wasn't around much.

I think he was referring to the Fire Guts toy not being around much. No idea on the actual numbers but there aren't a ton of them out there.

1. Cannonball - establishes the story setup and rationalizes some sense to the set
2. Ferak w/ Tornado - commemorate the original Transformers fiction: The Marvel G1 comics
3. Devcon - commemorates the original Transformers cartoon
4. Scorponok w/ Olin Zarak - commemorates the original Transformers toyline (through its gimmick)
5. Ginrai - commemorates the first Japanese-original Transformers cartoon that didn't directly build upon on the American fiction
Makes me wonder what the souvenirs will be like.

I kind of like it, but not for convention prices.
I feel the same about Cannonball and Devcon too.
If they were retail releases or store exclusives I'd get them.
Ferak is a skip in any case.
I'll be on the lookout for Scorponok, but if I can't find him for a price I like, I'm content enough with the Energon one.

The "shield" works, I guess. Didn't know the mold was capable of holding it like that.
Now, what will the pair of two-packs and the army builder set be, I wonder...?

Kinda disappointing, especially after such a long wait. You follow up Scorponok with this?

It's a "Classics" universe set to me (despite their labeling of this "Wings" universe thing). Not major characters outside of Scorponok, but everything can be justifiably put on a Classics shelf if desired, Cannonball maybe being tougher to justify. That makes me happy but also sad, because my shelf space for Classics is dwindling down to nothing.

Now that I think about it, weren't Ferak and Tornado among the very first comic-original characters ever created? I mean, Ferak was one of the first ones Marvel US made, and Tornado one of the first Marvel UK made, right?
So that kinda make the selection of those two for this set really make a lot of sense.
And was there any memorable cartoon-original TF character that appeared before Devcon did? If he was the first, then that further helps bring sense to this.

Looks like it's time to finish up the Fire Guts Ginrai gallery that I've been putting off until an appropriate time.

Essentially, the Wings Universe is an alternate version of the G1 cartoon universe, in which the two have mostly the same history, only with the Wings Universe having some additional events that the cartoon didn't have, and certain characters having different bodies from those seen in the cartoon (like, Optimus has his cartoon body, but Hot Rod has his Universe 2.0 Legends class body). In a way, this world acts as a substitute Classics universe, as the real Classicverse got destroyed, which was a splinter timeline for Marvel G1 comics that, like ReG1, ignored the G2 comics and UK G1 comics.ScottyP wrote:It's a "Classics" universe set to me (despite their labeling of this "Wings" universe thing). That's pretty much my thoughts too. I'd love a classics Ginrai/SuperGinrai/GodGinrai but Fireguts isn't the one I had in mind. The colors on this mock up look good. The biggest eyesore for me is the Knight badge. It's like the club was screaming "See! He's a knight!"

If it only makes sense to you, I wouldn't really call that making "sense" (no offense)...

I cannot find the word "knight" anywhere under any description of any Devcon character on the TFwiki. Neither can I find it on any Ginrai page (though I can find it in reference to the Sixknight character).
They could have called the set Pirates vs. Local Plumbers 386 and it would have the same amount of relevance to plumbers that it has to knights.

Well, think about it. If they wanted to create toys of comic-original and cartoon-original characters to pay tribute to both of their respective sources of fiction, wouldn't it make sense for an anniversary set to choose (among) the very first ones ever created by each?megatronus wrote:Sabrblade wrote:So that kinda make the selection of those two for this set really make a lot of sense.

Ferak was the first Marvel US original TF character, Tornado was one of Simon Furman's first Marvel UK original TF characters, and Devcon might have been the first Sunbow cartoon original TF character (unless anyone can think of someone memorable who came before him), so that's a possible reason for why those three in particular were chosen.

Yeah, people, aside from Cannonball, forget the theme and it's pretty clear that this is obviously an anniversary set for the 30th anniversary that commemorates the original comics, cartoon, toyline, and Japanese lore of the brand.JelZe GoldRabbit wrote:WiseMan wrote:The set is Pirates vs. Knights.

As a 30th anniversary set, as per Sabr's theory of these being the first characters of different types, it does make sense. I still don't like Ferak or Gingerai
Posted by Sabrblade on April 21st, 2014 @ 3:06pm CDT
But consider this. After 30 years, is it really that far out of the question for everyone other than Cannonball to have chosen a new career path?
It really seems that this year's theme has its character roster rooted more in the story that the characters will be in rather in the characters themselves.
In other news, Tornado has updated his Facebook with more posts since the last one we saw.
