Kup's altmode is colored correctly, his eyes are more lively blue, the opaque window matches his overall deco so much better, he's got a proper G1 Autobrand instead of a Movieverse one, his leg wheels are gray instead of black...
Cliffjumper's windows are solid opaque plastic instead of painted translucent plastic, his red is brighter and so much more vibrant, his arms and legs are the correct gray and black instead of red and black, his bazooka is metallic blue, he's got an Autobrand on his chest and on the front end of his car hood...
They both look so GOOD.
Posted by Sowndwave76 on December 10th, 2021 @ 4:55pm CST
I also like that Kup's limb parts are toned-down instead of a minty blue-green.
The backpack part being darker looks better as well.
It almost looks like his eyes are painted and outlined... The brighter blue looks good.
While I don't like the painted windows for Cliffjumper's alt mode, that won't matter because he'll always be in bot mode in my display.
The red-orange color looks fantastic.
And I do appreciate the gray portions of the limbs. It just looks better.
I don't care that much, but the metallic blue of the weapons is also an improvement imo.
So these guys are supposed to be released on the 30th?
This is a hunt I'm looking forward to!

Is this Hastak's move to sell more of this mold because they weren't able to figure out a better way with something like a SG version?

Anyway, back to Kup and Cliffy...
I tend to agree about Wreck-gar...
A height in-between Springer and Hot Rod would've been ideal imo, but even slightly closer to HR.
And the alt mode situation is just what it is... Even with a smaller figure overall, the bike was always going to be too big.
Even though I'm alrady certain I'll get this new CJ, earlier this evening I was looking at my ER version.
These new photos are just a little misleading in terms of the size of that window on the chest...
It's actually not that large, which considering that really bright blue paint, is a really good thing imo.

As for Cliff.... Wow. I really love my ER Cliffjumper, it's a fun mold that looks great. But this repaint makes him look dreadful. This is the repaint that shows to me attempts at cartoon paintwork don't work. The windows look terrible in both mode, and the car mode color and the weird paint layout make this toy legit look like a dollar store toy. That was not good. So glad it's exclusive and hopefully it stays that way.

Nah, they just repainted all the ones my local walmarts got and shipped them elsewhere [/joke (seriously, the 4 walmarts I check in on have had at least 4 Kups each since I moved in June).

Kup has the Orion Pax retool/redeco option, which looks like they will be doing anyways.
But I don't think it's about selling more of this mold per se but rather ensure that retailers have constant stock on their shelves for anyone who wants to buy Transformers. And thus is what they settled on as the low effort product.

Anyone else getting pre-WFC Takara Tomy vibes from these? Feels like the old days when TT would take Hasbro molds based on G1 toys and do their own versions with decos based on G1 cartoon models.
Definitely getting both. Kup's head sculpt still isn't great, but the brighter colors and painted eyes are such welcome improvements. CJ's new colors make for a much more visually interesting figure than just being another black and red bot.

No, I have. I very much have. But it's generally more robust on modern TFs when present in sufficient thickness and not idiotically used for ball joints or ittybitty tabs (Looking at you, Soundbarrier and SS86 Hot Rod).Jelze Bunnycat wrote:You never had clear plastic break on you, did you?ZeldaTheSwordsman wrote:*snip*Which is a massive downgrade because it makes him look like a candy toy or Happy Meal toy. I'm upset about getting another Kup though but I do like this new one so much more. Maybe I wouldn't mind so much if they looked radically different from each other. Like the difference between Titans Return Kup and Takara Legends Char. The bright colors for Kup always reminded me a bit of Turbofire...if his colors were more subdued and less garish. Bright turquoise, red and pink are not a good color scheme. Bright turquoise and grey are a fair bit better like a G1 version to the original deco's G2. PRID Kup is my current favorite stand-in for Turbofire. I always wanted to paint the lime green on him, pink.
Getting a second Cliffjumper won't bother me though. I'll just swap and repaint some heads. I have two Bugbites already so I'll get a second Hubcap (which is what I intended but forgot/didn't). Then give Bugbite Hubcap's head after painting it white, give ER CJ Bugbite's head after painting it red and give Hubcap CJ's head after painting it yellow. Maybe some Reprolabels for Bugbite. So I'll have red BB (Volks maybe? Stinger?), yellow CJ (Carrera maybe even though he's either gold, white or green and not yellow. and Rest-Q from my customizing. Or something like that.

Thankfully I think Hastak is doing a pretty decent job with using molds where it works at least decently well.

I do however look forward to the ones who are more honest selling their older Kups on. Because buying an SS86 Kup would beat paying Voyager price (after shipping) to get a rounded-arms kit for TR Kup off Shapeways (and that seems to be the only such kit for him out there).

Believe me, I don't think the painted windows are ideal at all. The Cliffjumper on the back of his package is my ideal, but that's not what's really available, unfortunately. The upgrades to Cliffjumper, though, including the brighter red paint, Autobot symbols, correctly colored limbs, and even the metallic blue painted bazooka, altogether outweigh the issue with the windows, especially in robot mode. There's a balance between character model accuracy and realistic detail that I enjoy in my figures, and BB Cliffjumper doesn't quite fit that perfectly for me, but it comes much closer than the Earthrise release.

Ah, well, see, for me the issue with the windows completely outweighs the good done by the other things. But there's more to it: not only do the windows massively offset the positive changes in looks by making him look like a bootleg or Happy Meal toy (especially in vehicle mode, where the limbs being more accurately colored is absolutely meaningless; the reduced detail paint doesn't help)... they're something that can't be readily fixed.
With Earthrise Cliffjumper, I could paint the limbs and weapons and whatnot, and change the red to a brighter shade if I were so inclined (although I'd have to see some comparisons with a G1 CJ toy to evaluate there). It'd be work, but it would be doable.
But paint can't magically turn opaque red plastic transparent. Which makes the windows not only a massive downgrade in looks, but a hard-to-fix massive downgrade in looks.
TLDR, for me this new CJ trades relatively-minor (and relatively easy to amend) cosmetic problems... for a major cosmetic problem that's hard to amend.

I'd just customise my ER Cliffy by painting the parts in the "correct" colors. As for the windows, I'd paint the BACK of the window in silver to make them brighter like they did for many of the Sideswipe/Sunstreaker molds. Finally, a repros on the chest.
I'd do the same with SS86 Kup.
Money saved and some fun projects to do.

I believe that Hastak's profits are the whole point.
Sure, more product on the shelves/pegs helps Target because there are plenty of consumers that view "more" equaling "better". Which also most likely means this is considered a sound business practice for b&m retailers.
But if this line didn't exist, that aisle space would be filled with something, even if it wasn't TF-related.
Not trying to split hairs, but your wording almost makes it sound like you think this is either some sort of sacrifice, hand-out, or favor on the part of Hastak,
or that this deal is more beneficial for Target.
Now, I don't know this line all that well, but the number of retools/repaints has to be exponentially more than new mold releases. In fact, other than Core class Bee w/ Spike, and Origins Bee, I can't even think of any new molds in Buzzworthy.
Meaning, I wouldn't even call this a mutually beneficial deal. That's not me suggesting Target is getting screwed. Or that Hastak is corporate evil.
But let's call a spade a spade.
You've even said it yourself-- that basically, this line is such a weird combination of releases...
To the point where these new SS86 releases are literally confusing.
Why such an odd mish-mash of releases? Because Hastak is using this line to sell a whole lot of repaints/retools.
All due respect, we can agree to disagree... I just think it's pretty myopic to think the whole point of this line is "giving Target more product for their shelves".

That's why I LOVE this line and many others do. Not only do we get nice repaints, but we often get a second chance to buy toys that we initially missed out. So it's all win.
Also, because this line is so weird and don't follow any rules, we can have reissues and repaints of much older toys like RiD, Animated, Prime, UT, classic Generations, and much more. Just imagine a re-release of Voyager Animated Blackout in Buzzworthy with an unique color scheme...

The painted windows make it easier to give him a lower window belt third party/3d print to make it look accurate. this cliff might look cheap but it's uniform and has a lot less needed to make it more accurate (tho an actual waist would take more than a third party piece). WFCs blacked out rear window is more windcharger than cliff (unless going by g1 toy then all the windows should be black) so it definitely has more going for it even with my preferences of clear windows.

None of you are really wrong with this. The line exists BOTH so that Hasbro has new products to make money off of AND so Target has fresh toys to put on the shelves so they can make money. The line wouldn't exist in the first place if, like Will said, Target didn't want it for their shelves. I'm not even sure why this is even up for debate.
