In the latest Hasbro Pulse newsletter, we have an in-depth chat with Hasbro Transformers toy designer Sean Carmine Isabella, talking about two characters part of the cast of animated series Transformers: Robots in Disguise: Starscream and Blurr. The two were added to the aesthetic of the show, while keeping some of their G1 elements (and some of Prime's, in the Decepticon's case) - check out below to find out more!

Epic Redesigns: Retrofitting Starscream & Blur into “Robots In Disguise”

Tapping into the rich history of Transformers lore, famed G1 Decepticon, Starscream, and heroic Autobot, Blur, are getting a Robots In Disguise overhaul. So what exactly went into detailing these classic characters? We went right to the source for the answers—Hasbro Senior Product Designer on Transformers, Sean Carmine Isabella.

About the Designer:

Designing many of his favorite childhood characters, Isabella builds new play experiences for the next generation of thinkers and explorers. Before he worked on heroic robots battling the forces of evil, Sean designed toys for brands such as Littlest Pet Shop, Easy Bake Oven, and FurReal Friends.

So, why Starscream?

“Being an ‘80s kid, the idea of high flying fighter jets always sparked my imagination. No one encapsulated this for the Deceptions better than Starscream. Drawing jets and spaceships is something of a hobby for me so getting the opportunity to work on reimagining a classic character, (and a jet no less!) was a dream come true.”

What elements of the G1 Starscream sculpt inspired this redesign?

“We wanted to hold onto certain iconic design traits to maintain his epic look—such as his chest exhaust design, graphic pattern on his wing, his overall color scheme, and his twin null ray blasters.”

What was your motivation behind Blur’s build?

“Blur’s a fast talking, speed loving Autobot. We wanted his design to evoke the same sense of speed to be true to the core of the character.”

Was there a specific G1 element you focused on keeping or updating?

“We looked at his classic Cybertronian mode that debuted in the 1986 film and reimagined how this vehicle mode would exist in a modern Earth setting.”

The GI connections certainly don’t stop with these bots. Tune in to Transformers: Robots In Disguise to find out if some of your favorites are getting a modern makeover.

Hm. It's a shame they only focused on asking about the G1 elements because I'd be interested to know what other incarnations they considered.

Are you fans eager to find Robots in Disguise Soundwave in stores soon? Well, if you are in the UK then it might be sooner than you think. TFW2005 user hellhound has found this RiD Warrior wave featuring Soundwave & Blurr in Sainsbury, UK. The specific breakdown of the wave can be found here and also features a masked Windblade toy and Skywarp.

Soundwave looks so AWESOME. I haven't gotten one RiD toy so far, and this guy might break that.

Huh. That package artwork makes his face look less Prime-esque and more G1 with Prime influences. Not that I'm complaining. It looks abso-freakin'-lutely beautiful and a toy I have to add to my (admittedly only toy figures) RiD collection.

Especially since my Cyberverse Beast Hunters Soundwave toy got broke and lost an arm. :(

Yeah, especially if Blurr is coming over from Rescue Bots. It feels like that show had just as much to do w/ the design for his new toy as G1 did.

You're silly. G1 is the only thing that matters in Transformers history, and nothing else was as important or better than G1. G1 reigns supreeeme All hail the G1 Gods, local raindances on Tuesdays @ 7 PM. Bring your mail-in Reflector toys!

That is Combiner Force One steps Wave 2 surely as Blurr & Sideswipe isn't in Wave 1.

Also there is going to be such a glut of Grimlocks what with him being repacked in two waves in a row - a Bumblebee might have made more sense to re-issue.

I can't help but see a lot more Rescue Bots Blurr in the RID Blurr than I can G1 Blurr the colours and head are kinda G1ish - but if they repaint him purple sometime (or make the rescue bots one in blue) then the similarity will be really nailed home. let me put it this way if I was of a mind to paint the wheel rims I'd consider painting them greenish/yellow in honour of the Rescue Bots toy.

Well there is a possibility that the waves are different in the UK but the UK wave one is something like this.

Quillfire (new packet)
Springload (new packet)
Arctic Sideswipe (new packet)
Drift (new mould)
Bumblebee (new mould)
Optimus (new mould)

They have the same ones in ASDA & Sainsburys.

Now it's not impossible they may have rejigged the assortments - all I can say is that Blurr and red (mould type 3) Sideswipe are not in that wave here.

While Europe getting special assortments isn't unheard of, it does follow the US ones for general retail. I guess the US skipped the first wave and headed straight into the second. I'd still like the product numbers tho, they should be on the bottom near the bar codes, or near the copyright and/or mold ID stamps on the actual toys.

I can't beleive that Soundwave will JUST be limited to Sainsburys, surely eventually other stores like Asda, Tesco & Smyths will get him in

http://news.tfw2005.com/2017/02/14/robo ... ers-333381
Ok! this is getting daft now! even though it's for the ap...we know we'll eventually be getting toys out of these(we're already getting a cyclonus) why are they just reusing characters that we've already seen & gotten with Combiner Wars?(Menasor, Galvatronus....which btw...this RID Cyclonus is legion class...so is waay too small to become a torso for a combiner!) instead it would've made more sense to get the combiners that we DIDN'T get with CW for Combiner Force....namely Predaking, Abominus, Monstructor, Piranacon, Road Caesar, Landcross(i think there's a Titans Return one coming?), Landfill & Raiden

coz the way Combiner Force is going....its looking like we may also get Superion, Defensor, Computron, Bruticus, Devastator & Liokaiser all over again! so soon after we not long got those with CW.

It has been a long time we didnt get new toy reveals through the Robots in Disguise App. It seems it is making up for lost time sinc we finally have our first look at not just 1, or 2, but 3 combiners:
Ultra Bee, Menasor and (hold onto your buts) Galvatronus!

There are also new Combiners/Activators: Soundwave & Torpedo Laserbeak (which we have already seen in toy form) and Optimus Prime & High Test.

We also finally see Dragbreak (which looks pretty much as you would expect), as well as Lunar Force Primestrong and Shocknado, which both appear to be redecos.

Let us know what you think of the designs. Remember that the combiners have been found to be at the 30$-35$ price point so that may explain why they look like simplified transforming toys with no individual robot modes, more along the power rangers zord concept.

Hopefulyl we will get a better look at these this coming saturday at the 2017 New York Toy Fair.

So, Galvatronus could be Cyclonus's endgame, using his mind control powers to not only manipulate the Council, but to also make himself a combiner. My theory, at least.

Though, look closely at Galvatronus's arms. Don't they look kinda like blue-colored Vehicons?

Wouldnt be the first time they reuse that character model in this show.

This news certainly has me wondering how these toys will work. The torsos on the bigger Combiners, and the fact that they have crash in their name, lead me to believe they will be closer to the two bot Combiners we've already seen with a similar gimmick. But I'm wondering how those arms will work. Any speculation?

Maybe mildly disappointed that they are not more in line with Warrior toys, but I was also pleasantly satisfied with Primestrong. The gimmick reminds me of the old days.

Hope they show these this weekend.

Plenty. I smell Powr Core Combienrs all over. So it would be a car and when you plug it, it turns into an arm. Or you hae to do a simple transformation into an arm, like power ranger zords.

I am sure kids will love this.

Oh! PCC. I could see that. Maybe that style of combining would offer up a little more articulation.

So it's interesting to not that the Activator Combiner Bumblebee has the Stealthforce mode and the 3 step seems to be stuck in that mode and doesn't even have the ability to fold up into a proper car at all. just as Optimus' new 3 step can not fold it's guns away.

So it seem the Activator Combiner Optimus is very like the 3-step just like is the case with Bumblebee too where the 3-step and Activator combiner are also very similar.

I'd wish they'd done a few more new moulds before starting on the crash combiner repaints though. I'd not minded a Decepticon repaint at all but just a random colour change - I hope will at least reference something in the story to have an excuse to exist.

If there is automorphing, then you usually get less articulation. The PCC toys had no articulation :( (and neither do Power Ranger zords)

Wait, why would we hold on to our 'buts'? But I like the word 'but' even though there's nothing to hold on to, as 'but' is a conjunction, not a physical object like a cigarette butt.

True, true. I was thinking of shoulder articulation mostly. These could be really good or really not. Only time can tell.

I agree too though that, "The kids will love'em". Oh the kids. :D

The mechanims in the PCC drones did inhibit motion and so cause a lack of functional elbows but they had fully mobile shoulders and some had opening hands. you can certainly pose them a lot they have waists, usually pretty mobile heads, knees, decent enough hips and so on.

I would be shocked if the $35.00 Combiners are that well jointed. I'm sure they will be an interesting talking point though.

I say so because of the fan-created part - of the many things fans chose for Victorion (like her gender, faction, component vehicles etc.) was what her rival should be. And - while this has unfortunately barely shown up in fiction at all yet - the fans chose Galvatronus to be her rival.

Ya. They did have knees, and the ports as articulation worked pretty well. I know PCC was not well loved, but I think they are pretty neat toys. Toys being the key word.

I'm doubting these RID Combos will have knees.

So it looks like we're getting 2 different sizes of Cyclonus then! one Legion & one larger that forms the torso of the combiner

it can't & it won't! but wouldn't it be funny if the legion Cyclonus could form one of the limbs of Galvatronus

The in-game models don't seem to look much like the images on the left side of each picture (which look more like in-show models). The Soundwave on the left, for instance, has a face much more reminiscent of his G1 look than the more Prime-esque look on the in-game model.

More importantly, take a look at the highlighted images on the left for Shocknado and Galvatronus. Shocknado looks much more like G1 Galvatron, while Galvatronus looks more like G1 Cyclonus, or at least an amalgam of Cyclonus and Galvatron.

Pretty sure the left side ones are from the toys' packaging art.

Lunar Force Combiner? Sounds like an exclusive line of redecos. Target maybe? Or perhaps Walmart finally gets a shot

Shocknado looks like a redeco of Skyhammer, and a Decepticon one at that. Shockwave/Shockblast and Tornado is what I'll be guessing for the names.

Dragbreak... Guess I was wrong, it is a single pack, with Drag Strip/Dragstar and Wildbreak. What are the odds of seeing the other two?

Hi-Test is partnered with Combiner Optimus Prime, guess that comes close to a "Hi-Q" reference.

We already know about Activator Combiner Soundwave, but why is Laserbeak classified as a Torpedo and not as an Activator?

Galvatronus should indeed be Cyclonus... but what intrigues me is that he seems to have 5 members instead of the predicted 4 for the rest. Also, each limb has a different accent color. The arms are indeed Air/Jet Vehicons, so the legs must be another type.

I wonder how the legs work on Menasor. And "Ultrabee"... *groans* Bumblebee's inability to come up with something cool strikes again

Eh the legs are vehicons(unless it's two halves of a vehicon) that's why they have wheels

UltraBee sounds better than my thought of Bumblelock Strongswipe

It's nice to see some rotation in a One-step you don't often get that.

It looks like the knees up are on a hinge system so the chest is the nose of the car and I like the elbows he has - it seems he spins at the knees.

But I really would prefer some more Decepticons - heck they could do a much better job with Thunderhoof - or at least repaint him a bit.

They never made a Megatronus One step so that would be worth doing as would Starscream.

I think that Shark one would work really well as a one-step too.

------

P.S.

This is now 5 One-step RID Bumblebee (2 Scissor,2 butterfly, and an unfold type).
4 Sideswipe (2 butterfly, one sort of Scissor and a rotate and chest pop type)
3 Optimus Prime (Flipchanger ish one, one which is mainly just moving his hands and standing it up, and an unfold like one) I would have expected one be made in white but they've not done that yet surprisingly.

2 Drift (One scissor and one butterfly)

------

So I'll say what I usually do - make more Decepticons and make Jazz.
Also why not make Rescue Bots onesteps in with the RID line ?

Which Sideswipe featured the rotation? Also Blurr and the newer Sideswipe are part of the Combiner Force Wave 2 One-Step Changers. Bee, Drift, and Prime are wave one.

The first is the switchblade type, the second is the car jack type, and it's the third that has the rotation. Twist the back spoiler and the whole body from the knees up twists along.

Part of me wanted to believe in the possibility of CW-compatible RID styled Stunticons (and thus a non-terrible Menasor torso be available) but it looks like they're going for both the legs being formed from one robot. And on top of that, even if by some miracle they were CW compatible, they'd be even flimsier than CW toys. :(

Argh. Being a combiner fan who doesn't like CW sucks. I just want good CHUG scaled combiners, damnit!

Unlikely that Hasbro would name a new character something as generic and hard to copyright as "tornado". Probably be something else that ends in "-nado" like Terrornado or Speednado.
