Today, Hasbro and Wizards of the Coast revealed new details of the upcoming TRANSFORMERS Trading Card Game. Players build a new deck composed of TRANSFORMERS character cards (which are twice the size of standard cards and can be flipped from bot-mode to alt-mode and back) and power them up with battle cards.
At launch, players can look forward to the AUTOBOTS Starter Set and Booster Packs to enhance their decks, though fans can get their first look at the game with the Convention Edition at San Diego Comic-Con 2018 where fans can get exclusive cards that are available in limited quantities.
TRANSFORMERS TRADING CARD GAME IS MORE THAN MEETS THE EYE
TRANSFORMERS TCG from Hasbro and Wizards of the Coast to Launch Later in 2018; Fans to Get Sneak Peek with Convention Edition Item at San Diego Comic-Con and Gen Con
PAWTUCKET, RI AND RENTON, WA–JULY 10, 2018 – Hasbro, Inc., a global play and entertainment company, and Wizards of the Coast, a subsidiary of Hasbro and the publishers of the seminal trading card game Magic: The Gathering, provided more details today about a trading card game inspired by Hasbro’s iconic TRANSFORMERS franchise: the TRANSFORMERS Trading Card Game. Designed for players ages 8 and up, the TRANSFORMERS Trading Card Game will be available for purchase in the United States and certain other markets later in 2018.
The TRANSFORMERS Trading Card Game is a fast, easy-to-learn action battling card game designed for two players. Players build a team of TRANSFORMERS character cards and power them up with a customizable deck of battle cards. TRANSFORMERS character cards are huge – character cards in the AUTOBOTS Starter Set and Booster Packs are twice the size of standard playing cards, and can be flipped from bot mode to alt mode and back – and feature premium printing treatment on one of their sides. The deck of battle cards features Action and Upgrade cards to enhance TRANSFORMERS character cards.
“The TCG format lets us pull TRANSFORMERS characters from across the brand’s massive history. From Bumblebee to Sunstorm – the game is digging deep into the TRANSFORMERS lore,” said Drew Nolosco, TRANSFORMERS Trading Card Game Brand Manager. “We can even focus on different aspects of the same character. Optimus Prime, for example, is immensely powerful in combat, but he’s also a master tactician. The Transformers TCG will let players explore the characters’ depth through engaging and tactical gameplay.”
At launch, TRANSFORMERS fans can look forward to the following:
· AUTOBOTS Starter Set - The AUTOBOTS Starter Set contains cards for two players to begin gameplay, and features OPTIMUS PRIME, BUMBLEBEE, IRONHIDE and RED ALERT character cards. It will be available for purchase at retailers in the United States beginning on Sept. 28, 2018, and in certain other markets later in 2018.
· TRANSFORMERS Trading Card Game Booster Packs - Players can add to their character card teams and battle card decks for full gameplay with Booster Packs. Each Booster Pack contains 1 TRANSFORMERS character card and 7 battle cards from a pool of 40 character cards and 81 battle cards. Booster Packs will be sold separately and available for purchase at retailers in the United States beginning on Sept. 28, 2018, and in certain other markets later in 2018.
Fans can get a first look at four cards for the TRANSFORMERS Trading Card Game in July with the TRANSFORMERS Trading Card Game Convention Edition. Limited quantities will be available for purchase at Comic-Con International 2018 in San Diego, Gen Con 2018 in Indianapolis and through the Hasbro Toy Shop at HasbroToyShop.com, where available, after the conventions. The TRANSFORMERS Trading Card Game Convention Edition contains two TRANSFORMERS character cards (CLIFFJUMPER – RENEGADE WARRIOR and SLIPSTREAM – STRATEGIC SEEKER) and two battle cards (All-Out Attack and Tandem Targeting System) not available in the AUTOBOTS Starter Set or the TRANSFORMERS Trading Card Game Booster Packs.

That's what I thought. Not that I find Transformers or robots particularly sexy but it does seem an odd choice of artwork there.

If you want to know what some of the cards look like, look HERE for an IGN article and HERE for preorders from the Hasbro store. It seems to be an interesting mix of DC Deckbuilding with a bit of Magic -- and personally, I'm really quite excited as I simply adore card games.
But assuming everyone knows about this already, is there any information that I missed? I would really like to learn as much as I can about this game so I can keep my hype satiated.
It will never be satiated.
EDIT: Thanks for the move. I couldn't find this thread.

Actual gameplay will vary from gameplay shown. For full 2-player gameplay, each player puts together a team of Character Cards (up to 25 stars when stars on Character Cards are added together), and a deck of 40 or more Battle Cards. Click below for the Transformers TCG Rules.
With the AUTOBOTS Starter Set, 2 players can start playing the game with fewer cards, -or- 1 player can use this set for full gameplay. Players can add cards to their teams and decks with Booster Packs (each sold separately)

They're very thin in MTG, too. The "rules" (as such) are complimented by what the cards tell you to do, rather than having a rule structure filled with endless what-ifs.

#Sideways# wrote:The only thing I sort of dislike is how Attacking and Defending reveals cards from your deck -- it's just a bunch of variance. It would be fine, though, if there were Scrying or similar tutor skills. But you seem to burn through your deck pretty quickly if you keep to the 40-card minimum. I also adore how you can attack with one guy per turn. Then, you can sequence what you want your opponents to be able to attack.

Actually it reminds me of cardfight vanguard with its drive checks and the old warhammer 40000 cars game where dice rolls were sorted by revealing the top card of your deck.

Would anyone like to see the SDCC exclusive card pack? In a pictorial review maybe?
Posted by Anonymous on July 24th, 2018 @ 10:07am CDT
MtG has all in one deck:
lands
creatures
Spells
The play therefore encompases all aspects of building your economy, creatures and magic. Multiple different strategies are possible as a result ie direct damage rather than creature spam etc.
This Transformers game appears to be so simplistic you simply lay your chaps out before you start. No economy, no balancing deck construction between economy, control or brute force.
Ill be getting a set and seeing how it works in pracitce, its just from first glance it seems to me you would need to have very very involving game mechanics in terms of the fighting to keep the interest. Maybe the transforming mechanic will be it, but no guarantees.
I actually dont mind the 'draw for luck' system. In other games i have played that work like this (monst notably the Star Wars CCG from like 20 years ago) the most powerful cards (ie Vader) had the lowest luck values and vice versa, so you didnt just spam huge characters in general as it would mean you were always unlikely to hit a big luck draw when you needed it.

Packaging, front and rear, with nice Slipstream art. Each pack contains 2 character cards (foil, in this case) plus 2 battle cards.
Cardboard inserted to protect the cards.
Pack also includes a promotional gold foil card for the game, with Slipstream silhouette one one side.
Then the two and two cards, as described on packaging!
The two Battle cards feature IDW comics art each: All-out Attack & Tandem Targeting System.
First character card is Slipstream - one side in jet mode, one in robot mode. The robot mode art is foil, and each mode has a different ability.
Specs: Strategic Seeker - Plane - Ranged attack
robot mode ATT 3 HP 13 DEF 1 | alt mode ATT 3 HP 13 DEF 2
Second character card is Cliffjumper - one side in vehicle mode, one in robot mode. The robot mode art is foil, and each mode has a different ability.
Specs: Renegade warrior - Car - Ranged attack
robot mode ATT 5 HP 12 DEF 2 | alt mode ATT 5 HP 12 DEF 2
Group shot.

Also, how to these cards feel in hand? Same as magic cards?
Omega-Doom wrote:Is there going to be a Decepticon starter deck? I would love it if they had released one. forever!
I think it would be a mistake not to have one. Its always been about Bots VS Cons. My guess is since the starter decks become available September 28, 2018 they will probably have some time to reveal a Decepticon deck before then.
Looking at most successful card games starter decks often come in pairs so that players can start with different decks. This is a good idea because the point of collectible card games are so that you can customize your deck rather than just play with preset cards. Facing different decks and choosing one that matches the player's style is very important. Especially when people feel they identify with the characters on the cards.
Magic players may remember how attached people got to their Ravnica guilds. The Return to Ravnica set saw record sales and event attendance too. While I doubt any cardgame could match that I think the principal is the same. Sorry if that's a ramble. I could use some sleep haha.

There is a decklist for the Autobot Starter set if you would like to compare cards. We also have a pictorial review of the SDCC exclusive card set which gives us a good first look of these cards in hand to get a better idea about their design.
While the only card image included with the set spoiler is of Decepticon Shockwave // Cybertron Commander we now know which characters will be featured. Since this set won't be out until September 28th, 2018 we have lots of time to speculate what they do and hope for more card images with text. Did your favorite characters make it? If not who would you have liked to see?

I'd also like to point out there is a list of credits at the bottom of the page that shows us who worked on the game.

Some of my favorite artists from the comics worked on this. Nick Roche, Sara Pitre-Durocher, and Alex Milne to name a few!

I don't want to burst the bubble here, but it may be the case that those people haven't directly worked on the game, just that their art is featured on the cards! I'm not saying this is for sure, just a heads up.

Yeah that was what I meant, didn't phrase it right I suppose. I would consider contributing artwork working on the game. But yeah, the WotC staff are the ones responsible for developing the actual gameplay and cards.

First up we have Sludge of the Dinobot! Or just Dinobot Sludge as Wizards of the Coast have dubbed him.
Next up, we have Jetfire, boasting his Classics toy design.
Here we have the Matrix of Leadership, something all Transformer fans will be familiar with now.
Last up is Nemesis Prime, everyone's favourite black repaint!

Hopefully they make some cards that allow you to discard your deck quickly then, or else it just becomes a neat novelty ability.

The deck also features Scamper, Six-Gun, and Slammer, plus some special battle cards to use with this first enormously oversized Titan foil card, and lends itself to speculate that once the Decepticon side is brought into the game we'll be seeing some giant purplesaur too. Check out the image of the deck in packaging below, and let us know what you think!
