Autobase Aichi has posted higher resolution and non-watermarked copies of the previously seen promotional photos for the upcoming TakaraTomy Unite Warriors Aerialbots set. The updated images feature Slingshot in better detail as well, and as expected, all of the figures feature different decos from their Hasbro counterparts including their weapons and combiner weapons/appendages.

So has anyone else noticed the guns added to the thighs of Takaras Superion? it fills him out a little more, i think it helps the overall aesthetic ;)^

There are a few reasons I opted for Takara's over Hasbro's. Firstly, it actually comes out cheaper than buying the hasbro version locally at walmart. It come to about the same price if I waitied for a sale and plus I would be waiting forever for slingshot (I can always get the alpha barvo mold as blades later).

Secondly, while the deco is better, the big part of the deco that gets me giddy is the superion chest. Let me explain.

The character model has Silverbolt's chest transform into Superion's chest and they are very different color wise. Silverbolt's chest in the G1 cartoon is red but seperated by white while Superion is red all across (except for a small patch).

Due to the engineering of back then, the G1 toy could not do that so the chest was a full red for both Superion and Silverbolt since it didnt really transform.

However, the new updated Combiner Wars toys have the engineering so that whatever chest Silverbolt has, Superion doesnt necessarily have to share it. And indeed, the transformation into a torso is quite involved and the same chest peices are not reused. And yet, Hasbro's lazy paint job doesnt showcase that at all since you still end up with a full red chest for both Silverbolt and Superion.

However, Takara does make the most of this great tnrasformation by showcasing how the torso has morphed and is far from just being Silverbolt's chest. And for once, the color change on the chest is very visible. This may look small, but it is a big deal for me since it highlights the evolution in engineering of these wonderful toys.

Are we sure that blades is going to be a remold and not a new mold (or at least a remold like chromia)

Also I like takara's silverbolt better than hasbro but the rest are the same and I will take new over old, so hasbro for me

He was shown on a comic cover as part of Defensor: Blades' tail piece looks remarkably like Alpha Bravo's, only in red, plus he follows the arm transformation exactly.

my thoughts on Hasbro VS Takara:

Air Raid
i think i like hasbros more. that gold trim looks really nice, and the extra red spot on his shins pops better than takaras silver.

Skydive
pretty much the same, but takaras is just hasbros +1. black on the ribs and red on the shins makes him better. its just math folks.

Fireflight
takara wins for having less blue. i also like how the silver "trims" the sculpted parts of the chest.

Silverbolt
that yellow, looks kinda bad in the pics. but its spot on accurate. while hasbros orange/gold is really nice, i gotta go accuracy. the little things like gold knees and silver shoulders go a long way too. takara wins.

Superion
over-all, takaras snow white just looks nicer (also, big points for white hands/feet). combiner head has his needed gold antenna. and the crotch, being red all the way across give it a faux attachment piece look. as does the almost solid white chest with red center piece.

over-all, takara wins for me! ;)^

Hmm he could still be a retool since reports were saying he was more futuristic looking. Then again I'm buying him anyways so I can have rotor arms :D

If it's a re-tool it's going to be the absolute minimum they can get away with to make it different. Look at the rest of the line. EVERYTHING is getting repainted and re-purposed at least twice and they are hauling in crap from 2 lines (or further) back and repainting and re-purposing THAT stuff as well. It's not going to be a matter of what figure, it's going to be what color do you want any figure in because you are going to have 6 different paint schemes to choose from.

Something to note about Hasbro's deco. While Takara went full on cartoon-accurate with theirs, the Hasbro deco leaned more towards toy-accurate, especially with Silverbolt's robot mode color layout, his gold color and its layout, and with the wing designs on Firefly, Skydive, and Air Raid.

However, there is one thing on Hasbro's Superion that was deliberately not colored toy-accurate, but was not colored show-accurate either: Superion's face. The original toy had a face with a mouth and nose under the visor, while the cartoon model had a mouthplate instead. A dark gray mouthplate. Notice that Hasbro's CW Superion instead has a bright silver mouthplate instead of being either toy-accurate black or show-accurate dark gray? Well, there is a reason for that.

The original toy was not the only place in the 1980s that depicted Superion with a mouth instead of a mouthplate. Japanese magazines illustrations and manga, like those dran by Studio Ox and such, retained the toy's mouthed face instead of drawing the cartoon model's mouthplate, even despite the version of Superion portrayed in that Japanese media being the same person as the cartoon version. What's more is that the few Japanese illustrations that were colored instead of in black and white had Superion's mouth area colored light gray/silver instead of toy-accurate black or show-accurate dark gray.

Fast forward to today with Hasbro's CW Superion having a light silver-colored mouthplate serving as a compromise between all of his 1980s media depictions. The mouthplate is from the cartoon, but its silver coloring is from the Japanese illustrations, such as these ones:

Also notice the Autobot-y blue visor the colored ones, when the original toy had a yellow visor, the cartoon had a Decepticon-y red visor, and both the Hasbro and Takara new Superions have red visors.

Me too, I prefer the extra bits of colour in both Firefly (blue) and Air Raid (gold). I also prefer the black hands/feet on Hasbro's Superion. It's not as accurate but it doesn't over-do the white and does well to break things up.

For the sake of accuracy I will still get Slingshot. I'll pose Alpha Bravo as a standalone figure, as he's a cool little dude in his own right.

Now here's the thing. What with Takara going for character accuracy, I fully expect to see Menasor with Wildrider, but what's going to happen with Defensor? Groove is already there, just as a Legends figure to add on to the chest. I doubt that Takara will re-design him as a Deluxe to replace Rook.

Hisashi Yuki on Unite Warriors Superion, MP Star Saber and "Adventure"

- How did "Combiners" become the theme?
Y: In "Generations" series overseas, popular characters were picked without a particular theme. (Generations figures) are packed with IDW comics overseas, but there wasn't much connection between the characters, their designs and the contents of the comics. Then Hasbro changed their direction and decided to develop a series with the "Combiners" theme and connect the comics to it. TakaraTomy had been suggesting combiners to Hasbro for a while, and this time it was fit for what Hasbro was looking for.

- So the situation is different from when "Generations" Bruticus was developed.
Y: The purpose was to create a high priced product firstly, and Bruticus from the game was selected.

- It seems that the Japanese fans and the overseas fans see "combiners" differently. How was the reaction of the overseas fans?
Y: I think knowledgeable and enthusiastic fans overseas were pleased that they were finally getting combiners. I was at Botcon when "Combiner Wars" was announced, and when the silhouettes were revealed there were cheers.

- How did you proceed with the development of Superion?
Y: Due to the scheduling, 3 or 4 people are working with the products including Superion. Since it was being re-made as a current product, an extra effort seems to have been made to have as few excess parts as possible. The head and the chest plate were excess parts in the original toy, but now they are incorporated into Silverbolt. As for the base mode, it was omitted at the beginning because of the various factors that would have been required to form the runway. The wrist transformation gimmick is an idea which had been thought of a long time ago, but wasn't realised in a product until now.

- This Superion's legs are back-to-front.
Y: It is due to the joint movement. If the nose of the jet is at the back of the leg, it gets in the way when the knee is bent. Though it is possible to combine them back-to front. It is not the official way, however I think using such tricks is also a part of combiner robot fun.

- How did you decide on the direction of Japanese "Unite Warriors" development?
Y: This can be said for "Legends" series as well, but the concept for the current domestic products is that we want (the customers) to remember the Transformers from the past. We do not want someone who had (Transformers toy) long time ago to feel (the new ones are) somewhat wrong. When we first learned of Overseas Superion's specifics, we thought, "huh? There's a wrong guy in the team" (*laugh) So it was decided to make Japanese Superion consisting of all jets.

- How come is it sold as a set?
Y: I believe the concept works only when the five robots are present and they should be to played with as a whole team. Although some in the (developer) team suggested to sell them separately. The 5 robot combiners are to be released one by one this year and because of that they are marketed separately from "Legends". Hasbro's lineup is gearing toward combiner warriors and we are considering developing "Legends" series that is different from the overseas.

- Any other point of interest besides changing a member?
Y: The colour scheme is closer to the cartoon image. Actually I combined the images evoked by the cartoon and the original toy well so that the end result is not too far off from either. I like Hasbro version's black wrists and ankles, but still chose white in accordance with the original. As for the paint applications, I made it as close to the original as possible such as the patterns on the wings. If you are not familiar, they are all minor changes, but I did not want to compromise after we went as far as changing a member to stick to the original. When it comes to the Japanese versions, one of our unofficial objectives is to give them deluxe deco so that the fans all over the world would want them, too. I would be happy if they buy Transformers as souvenirs when they visit Japan. (*laugh)

- Also MP Star Saber is going to be released in March at last.
Y: I was particular about constructing it using the colours of moulded parts. You will notice it when you see the actual item. This is not only because of the cost, but I also wanted it to be a toy that you can play with freely without worrying about chipping the paint. If this concept is received favourably, I think Masterpiece series will be able to have wider range of lineup.

- I was amazed at the volume of it when I handled the sample.
Y: Giving (MP Star Saber) the impression of the volume as close to the original as possible was one of the concepts since the beginning of the development. The people who played (with the original) must have considered it very big and I didn't want them to think it became smaller as a Masterpiece.

- I can't help wondering about Victory Leo....
Y: I'd like to know that as well. (*laughs) In fact I haven't done anything so far. When I developed Star Saber I drew a rough sketch, but I can't go any further until the company gives the green light. This Star Saber is also considered to be the 30th anniversary celebration item, so first of all I hope the people who voted (for Star Saber) or owned Star Saber long time ago will be satisfied with it when they have it in their hands.

- Tell us about your current work.
Y: I am working on the localised series such as "Adventure", "Legends" and "Unite Warriors". As for "Adventure" toys, more colours are added to make them cartoon accurate as well as homage to the past series. Their release dates are not far behind their overseas counterparts, and I hope the Japanese versions will be purchased with confidence. Also, some characters who were not able to release previously will be added to the line up this time. I made Dreadwing's colour scheme closer to his appearance in "Beast Hunters".

- "Adventure" seems to be marketed ambitiously, for example (the toys) are released close to their overseas versions.
Y: We are taking various ambitious approaches such as the way the show is broadcast; as well as showing on Animax, it will be broadcast online so that the viewers will benefit from being able to watch it any time. The preceding show, "Q-Transformer" has been played online more than our expectations.

- This year is the 30th anniversary of Transformers arriving in Japan. What do you suggest the fans to pay attention to?
Y: Firstly I hope you will take notice of "Adventure". The story is interesting, and the picture is bright. It is a typical Transformers show in a good way. There will be many merchandise, too, and I hope you will watch the show and discover your own hero. (note by Sydney: in the original text,Mr.Yuki uses the phrase "boku ga erabu boku no hero" (My hero, chosen by me), which was a catch phrase for G1 toy advertisement) Also, the other cartoon, "Q-Transformer" is received favourably by female audience. If "Q" Bumblebee is your favourite, I hope you will take a look at "Adventure" Bumblebee as well.

- Very colourful lineup worthy of the 30th anniversary indeed.
Y: We had 2 major lines last year; "30th Anniversary" and "the Movie". This year we are aiming for a wider variety. I will be happy if you can meet many different kind of Transformers and enjoy them.

That was hilarious. And I love it. It keeps answering what all the naysayers are complaining about. You want transformer toys catered to you with premium deco? Just buy Takara, the specific fans who grew up with the products is all they are catering to.

I find it really intereesting how the same toy can be used to cater to two groups of people when its presided over by two different companies.

I am still wondering what they will do with Defensor and Groove under their current mindset.

Well, guess what: Unite Warriors Menasor has been revealed in Figure King 206:

Magazine scans on TAG Hobby

As expected, Offroad seems to have been nixed in favor of the original Wildrider! As far as I can tell, he's not an original mold, rather like Sling he seems to be a retool, in this case Dead End.

Why not? G1 Menasor had purple hands and feet. I'm just waiting for a good look at Wildrider and if he's decent looking and Menasor's horns go black, this is a buy.

Most likely if Blackjack is planned for Japan, he'll be released in the Transformers Adventure line like Powerglide is. He could even be redecoed as his originally intended character: Runabout.

I'm hoping they do more than just give him a new head, but I do like the Dead End mold, a lot. He's one of the more solid designs of the Combiner Wars line, so far.

I was hoping Hasbro's versions of these figures (Slingshot and Wildrider) would be heavily retooled remolds, but I doubt it. Takara's done all of the work for them, so all they really need to do is throw 'em in US packaging and sell 'em.

It's better than nothing, sure, but still... :(

I do know fans are working on replacement arms and wings for both Slingshot and Fireflight so they can be the same mold, but different. I hope they're as good as it sounds.

But still, the fact that he isnt seen as part of this line lets me believe that UW Menasor will sport some interesting chest deco to replace the fact that the little car isnt there. Dont know how they could pull off a G1 deco though, with all those running tubes.

They may remold the chest plate underneath. It would work, too. New paint apps, new details, no need for Blackjack, might even be cheaper in the long run. One piece being retooled rather than an entire figure.

They could just keep the chest doors closed since those doors already look like Menasor's chest design anyway.

In case you haven't noticed, when closed Menasor's chest kinda resembles the Roller Car :)

Indeed. I'd like to see how it looks with Takara's paint apps all over it. However, with these kits I'm about to show you, it might not matter, because these look to fix some issues, especially with Menasor.

Menasor

Superion

The two together

Click back and forth to see all the pictures from each item's gallery, it's worth it.

I am really surprised they didnt give superion white hands to match his G1 deco since the whole point of the set seems to make these more accurate.

The text in the image states that it's the Hasbro version (just with Wildrider instead of Offroad).

Oh, trust me, that set's coming at a later date. Perfect Effect is one of the biggest proponents of redecos among 3rd party stuff. 3rd parties have been doing so for a while now, but PE took the ball and ran with it. They *live* for that kind of thing. I'd imagine about 6 months or so after this one is released, they'll do one for the Takara set with matching deco and apps. Menasor's easier, both Hasbro and Takara seem to be using the same color scheme.

Still, yeah, it's a bit odd they'd use Hasbro's black hands and feet when most will want G1 accuracy.

The only thing that really has me mystified about this Superion set is that there's no forearm mount for Superion's rifle. Can't get more G1 accurate than that.

I'm still putting money on them revealing next year's afterburner mold via a retool of it into their groove.
