I'd also like to see his design change a bit. I feel like his horns/ears are what throw off some of his positive vibes for me.
But yea, good to hear he and he Scavengers will return.

First thought: Movieverse Bumblebee, 'cause of all the little tech greeblies, particularly in the top-left corner. And it's yellow.
Looking at it more, maybe some flying gun drone thing?

Early on Grimlock and the Dynobots battled shockwave on Earth. Grimlock had a backup plan incase they lost. He instructed their ship to fire on shockwave's location if that happened. The ship's firepower ignited a volcano that incased them all in lava. The Dynobots were on orders to not go after shockwave and they did with no one knowing. Since no one knew where they were, they were considered deserters and charges with multiple crimes. Eventually(Maxumim Dinobots) they resurfaced and battled Scorponok and Shockwave. Long story short, Ultra Magnus showed up and arrested Grimlock who took full responsibility for their actions due to the fact none of the other Dynobots knew about Grimlock's back up plan.
Grimlock was arrested and taken to Garrus-9 while the others were released, rebuilt their ship and left Earth where they were not seen again until RID #5 when they returned to Cybertron.
Grimlock spent his time locked up on Garrus-9 until Overlord took over. The Wreckers -sent in to liberate the prison- went to release Grimlock to help in the liberation only to find his cell empty. His next appearance was MTMTE #7. No one knows where he's been or how he wound up on the Decepticon ship he was found on or how he suffered severe damage.

They've always been a sort of dysfuctional family. From the top of my head I remember that they were originally a six piece strike team called the Dynobots, who never quite got over the death of their sixth member, Skar. They've always been Autobots who don't really class themselves as Autobots. They see themselves being different due to their heavy handed, overly aggressive nature. It also didn't help that they were cursed with some alt mode disease type thing where they would become enraged beasts. They were eventually cured of it though.
They followed Shockwave to pre-historic Earth (where they adopted dinosaur alt modes and thus becoming 'Dinobots') where they were caught up in a battle with him which resulted in them all getting preserved in molten lava. They were rediscovered millions of years later, during the whole Earth portion of IDW TF where they fought both Scorponok and Shockwave. It was revealed that Grimlock was at fault for them getting preserved in lava as he hit some sort of killswitch on their ship that created a volcanic eruption. The rest of the crew were p****d off with him for it and there's been a frosty relationship since. At the end of it Grimlock gets arrested by Magnus. I'm not actually sure why, perhaps destruction of property on Earth, or perhaps abandoning his post when they followed Shockwave millions of years earlier, I can't quite remember. Slag becomes the leader and Grimlock is sent to Garrus-9, the Autobot penal colony.
During 'Last Stand Of The Wreckers' which is set on Garrus-9(which you totally must read if you haven't already), you're told that Grimlock was driven mad by Overlord, as he forced him to constantly watch footage of all the awful stuff that happened in the prison upon Overlord's arrival. Grimlock apparently went nuts as a result and disappeared. His mysterious appearance in the DJD/Scavengers episode of MTMTE is the first we've seen of him since, so no idea how he got there.
