Bottom page, first bubble: she's a Catharsian
what that actually means I've no idea, though it's presumably derived from "catharsis" which is definitely appropriate given then themes of this story...

It means it's another robot race. That's all. There's dozens of them. Some are possible colonies like the now extinct ardurians and others like some we've seen as part of Roms organization are just robots

I wish her design was actually different from a Cybertronian's. As a mechanical race, she looks like every other robot in the story. The stentarians were cool and had their own visual aesthetic, but I wouldn't have known Mengel was a different species had the comic not told me.
Also, she's called Mengel? Really? Why not just call her I.M. McBadguy?

At least killmaster was supposed to be stupid and it follows conventional transformer naming conventions, but I can't help but feel that Mengel is supposed to be clever or something. Like, it would've actually been better to just call her death angel.

I think Lost Light has balancing issues. I really do like cute stories now and then but too many of them doesn't feel genuine. It's the main adventure stories that give the "feelsy" ones meaning.

It's probably Greek or Latin or something like that.
That's Roberts. He tries to make up clever unique names and it just tubs out to be a Greek or Latin word.

Ok, I actually bothered to look it up. The closest thing I could find was Mengel as an old German surname that derives from another, older German word for trader or peddler. It's still German, which doesn't dispel my original thought about what Roberts' might be referencing.
I'm fine with latin/greek names. They sound find while still conforming to transformers naming conventions in a way that better explains what a character is all about. I especially like, Trepan.

Like Don Figueroa used to write the Japanese names of transformers or just transformers in Japanese on the side of Cybertron cities as an Easter egg. That's a language man. A human language. That just looks ridiculous

Yeah you're right, Mengel doesn't seem to be good and honest type. I Didn't get around to saying it when the last issue came out so I figured I'd throw the opinion out there now.

If that is honestly the case than I see this story going as:
Natica finally learns to let skids go. As her and Lotty leave, Mengel yells from the door "wait! You forgot his brain!" natica says "I don't need it now" and the last page Skids is revived by Mengel without a anyone knowing because they've left.
Please for the love of god don't let it be that cliche

That was my first thought as well. But IIRC, Shockwave was already compared to and/or modeled after Dr. Mengele due to his experiments, though I'm not sure which writer started that.Ballistic90 wrote:Seriously? Everyone, it's a reference to the Nazi doctor:

That's what I originally thought, hence my references to death angel/angel of death, as he would become known. Though, I did want to give Roberts the benefit of the doubt that it might be something a bit more clever (forgot about the tooth gap, though). I didn't say it outright because I didn't think it entirely appropriate to start talking too extensively about high profile Nazis on a transformers fan site. Thank you for ripping off that band aid in all sincerity.

Right now, basically everyone who wasn't kicked off the ship, or who was away for the Combiner Wars crossover. Naturally we don't know if there's people still on the Lost Light against him; but that's what we'll be waiting for #10 for.
In terms of characters left on the Lost Light that have mattered narratively in the past... Perceptor, Atomizer, Thunderclash, Bluestreak, Mainframe, Blaster and Riptide are the ones that come to mind right now.

Wasn't Thunderclash in a coma at the time of the mutiny?

He got woken up by Tailgate's spark spasm just after the attempted attack on megatron. How long there was between that and the actual mutiny I'm not sure, and Getaway was imprisoned for essentially all of that time so may not have had chance to have "the talk" with Thunders. I guess someone like Atomizer could have done so on his own?

So:
First little thing was MTMTE 19's reveal of the constructed cold trials with Tyrest. Flame is on trial, and includes the desecration of bodies and other related crimes.
Story first really starts in Last Stand of the Wreckers. Overlord takes over the prison for over 3 years, and during that time Grimlock disappears and Flame must've disappeared too, as he was an Autobot and Overlord ordered all bots to be killed at the end (and they were), so he had to have been spirited away too. MTMTE issue 6 would also state that when Overlord was interrogating Fort Max, he stated that he didn't want Aequitus, he wanted what it was built to hide. We thought nothing of it at the time, but what if there was something, and that's where Grimlock and Flame went?
Forward to MTMTE 7 and 8 with the Scavengers. They find a symbol ship with aborted protoforms and a wooden robot (sound familiar LL 8 coffin bot?) along with Grimlock, who is brain damaged and basically doesn't even know who he is. He was used for something that damaged him internally, whether it be by actual surgical procedures or a case of Skids where his experiences damaged him emotionally/psychologically.
Potentially related but uncertain at this point: MTMTE 21. Skids sees through Tyrest's portal to cyberutopia. A spark that speaks in pictures, and the pictures include a bot and con symbol and the Lost Light, along with the "symbol" and 5 planets/moons, and the setting of cyberutopia is even 5 planets/moons. Pharma, who was already found by Tyrest, has his headless corpse pulled through by tentacles before it closes. Tyrest also disappears ala Magnus hand trick style. Star Saber teleports away half blinded and hasn't been seen or heard from since.
MTMTE 42 shows Thunderclash's map and the "symbol" again, and as it uses plug outlets for the symbol, it would appear to indicate that this is something related to power potentially.
MTMTE 46 shows the mysterious bots for the first time. More protoforms hidden by standard transformers practice who are protected by the mystery bots in exchange for hiding whatever operation is happening. Mention is made of another location, which is visited by the bots in issues 8 and 9 of LL. Also shows Grimlock drawing the symbol and writing a phrase that Drift would later see in his LL1 vision.
MTMTE 50 shows the bots discussing the symbol and the things they have learned about their quest. Indication is made that these symbol guys are part of one of the 5 clans of the Knights. we have also seen 5 planets/moons related to the symbol that is most prevalent.
MTMTE 54: Skids, the one bot who saw the other side of the portal and thus what the spark said, dies.
LL1: Drift has his vision that includes himself, Rodimus, and Grimlock facing off against Pharma and an army of Sparkeaters and symbol ships, with the message Grim was writing etched into the ground and it is raining those crystal things that in
LL5: we find out Rung's true purpose is to create these crystals, which is crucial in the process of birthing new cybertronians.
LL6: Anode is shown to be a blacksmith who crafts the crystals from Rung to allow for new cybertronians to be born.
LL8: mystery bots show up again, led by Flame, and they are still using a symbol ship and they are after blacksmiths who craft life while they are at a location where protoforms are being grown. There is also a robot who turns into a wooden coffin, killed by the black block consortia.
If I missed anything, please add to this!

this is Not gonna go well...
Honestly the most I think will happen in terms of resurrection is perhaps a chance to say goodbye (or learn about the portal! I'm pretty sure he didnt tell anyone) in a similar vein to No Guns, No Swords, No Briefcases. Even then I doubt it, much as I'd love nautica to get some peace of mind on that front I think it's more effective if she's left to deal with it herself

Besides the spark portal symbol stuff which wasn't really intrinsic to him (just that his amnesia made him guilt-free and so able to go through), there was nothing really left in his arc.
That's not in itself grounds to kill a character imo, but it does mean that getting them back isn't necessarily crucial.
It's kind of why, conversely, I'm still not keen on megatron departing from the story so early/suddenly (hopeful suspicions of an eventual return aside)- there was still so much more left for him to do.
That, and he was one of the best parts of this series, no qualifiers. I've always loved how Roberts writes megs, particularly his pre-war self which is what he was essentially returning to over the course of mtmte. Genuine, moving, and by nature political- the "questions to power" speech from Tony Benn uhhh... Chaos Theory really spring to mind as epitomising that.

That cover has really thrown me off though, seriously gorgeous as it is it seems an odd choice? We've had unrelated covers before but I don't remember any that *were* directly related, just Tina *different* title. Honestly, my guess is that it was commissioned by IDW and completed before the confirmation that taao would end, and hence using it now so as not to let it go to waste. Can't say in complaining- as I said, it's seriously gorgeous!

Anode's colour scheme mainly consists of green and grey; with accents of brown and a couple bits of yellow here and there. Her eyes are bright blue.
Lug's colour scheme mainly consists of dark grey and red; with blue highlights and eyes. Her face is white.
