this giant is a work of art. Each individual giant constructicon tries really hard to mimic the designs of the 1985 individual constructicons.
the giant devestator mode really does a great job of trying to mimic the 1985 devestator designs. perfect job, another great 3rd party toy.
Deluxe scale for each giant constructicon means their in 1984-1986 cartoon/movie size scale.
I Think the giant devestator mode is leader sized. which puts in in scale with the energon 5-in-1 combiners gestalts.
I really Hate the "Hercules". Because I'm all about scale & exact updated homages. having each individual hercules constructicon be voyager size makes them over-sized & have no original 1985 cartoon nor 1985 toy scale.
I don't like the hercules individual robot modes. because they look nothing like the 1985 constructicons robot modes. at best they look like something similar to the CR/RID 4 constructicon bots or various other constructicon bots from the years 2001 thru 2011.

necr0blivion wrote:Sweet pics, but there's some "kibble" hanging out in the nether regions!
My guess, this was done on purpose to make a joke about the ROTF movie devestator scene.
most likely the "nether regions kibble" on giant can be adjusted to not be in the nether regions area. the crane can most likely adjust to another non-nether region area on the giant toy.
tmk9883 wrote:All things being equal, TFC looks better. Unless this thing is way cheaper, I dont see why you would pick it.
Because some, like myself favor the more exact updatted homage & the more appropiate size scaled version. TFC Hercules loses on both accounts. TFC Hercules is too over sized in the individual voyager sized constructicons & supreme sized Devestator. TFC Hercules individual robot modes & devestator mode look less like the 1985 invididual constructicons/devestator than giant does.
Having a huge TFC Hercules devestator that is supreme sized might seem cool. but it's over sized & some prefer perfect size scaled TF toys. G-1 Combiners were not shown as supreme sized toys in the 1980's. the supreme size scale should only be reserved for planet formers or city formers.
the 1985 individual constructicons toys were basic or legends sized. the 1985 constructicons on the cartoon were shown as deluxe scale. as they were in similar scale to the average medium autobots like jazz, prowl, ironhide, wheeljack.
The TFC Hercules individual constructicons robot modes don't even try to mimic the 1985 individual constructicons robot modes.
At the very least Giant's individual constructicons are in proper deluxe size scale cartoon 1984-1986 media size scale. the giant devestator appears to be leader sized. which put's him around 9.5 to 10 inches tall. the original 1985 devestator toy was aroound 8 inches tall,so another 1.5 or 2 inches isn't that big of a addition.
Giant's individual constructicons robots modes do try their best to mimic the 1985 constructicons toy/cartoon designs.
Giant's devestator mode looks more like the 1985 Devesator toy/cartoon designs. and TFC Hercules looks less like the 1985 Devestator toy/cartoon designs.
I'm sick & tired of radical updates that look next to nothing like the original toy. I hate over sized or under-sized updated homage new molds.

Long Haul was the first one that I did a double-take on. He's interesting.
It's odd how six gangly looking bots can form such a beefy combiner.
Scrapper looks to be on-point nicely.
Bonecrusher is kind of off from what I would have hoped for.
Scavenger is on the other side of my last point, he is surprisingly awesome.
Mixmaster is looking to be on-point as well. He looks creepy. Good.
Hook isn't too special. If the crane arm works for Grapple, it works here.
Long Haul...well, he robot mode sucked in G1. Go look at it (though, all these guys had mostly crap robot modes in G1). This is a solid update.

QC is becoming an issue with Hercules, both figures have design flaws. To their credit they stepped up and took care of the excavator arm issue on Exgraver, but they've yet to say what they plan on doing about Heavy Labor's stripped hip ratchets.
I also like how Giant retains more of the G1 design elements in combined mode.

I don't like the individual bot modes.
Scrapper is really good, maybe even having a slight advantage in my book to the Herc version, but Hook, Longhaul and Scavenger are unacceptable to me. The arm kibble on Scavenger and Hook were the deal breakers.
I also don't like that the Devy forearms are separate pieces. Neat idea making them trailers, though.
Don't get me wrong, had Herc not been available, or not come out first, I would be very happy with Giant. It is, overall a very nice piece of work, but to me this is the lesser of the two offerings.

Also, and not meaning to take away from Giants spotlight here, but i wonder if anyone is going to do a nice Autobot combiner like Hercules or Giant one of these days. But I'd much rather see somebody make an Abominus first THEN do an Autobot combiner.

I agree Mkall. I love his stockiness makes him look like a badass. I love how the individual robot modes all have character. Very very impressed.

It's a good effort. I already planned on getting Hercules (got Ex and HL already) and prefer him at this point for the simple fact that everything is built in to the vehicle modes (the trailers kinda annoy me on Giant's bits) and I am also of the opinion that BIG is GOOD. Or, as Grimlock would say, much more gooder. My other beef seems to be the head being hidden by so much of the shoulders. The head may look great but if you can't see it then what's it good for...
Posted by Trikeboy on November 10th, 2011 @ 12:32am CST
Incorporating the combiner parts as trailors just looks wrong to me (as it did on G1 Devy). Also, Giant makes no attempt to hide the combiner head attached to Hook, its sitting out right next to the cab. His own head can clearly be seen at the back too. I haven't seen many cranes with a large robot head attached to it.
Giant:
Hercules:
Longhaul looks too Movieverse for my liking but could be good for a kitbash into the Fallen. At first glance my first thought was Stockade:
So, yeah, I'm not regretting going with Hercules as my 3rd Party Devestator. If the cost of Giant isn't too high, I might consider getting one to repaint ala Shattered Glass though.

Giant is approximately the same size as Bruticus with the FansProject upgrades, I believe the price is about $300.00.

All currently existing combiners are too small IMO, I want combiners to look huge and menacing like Herc's is gonna be.

Hercules was tempting; but ultimately it didn't win me over. For Voyager class sized components, they don't seem to have particularly inspired transformations. Scavenger's Exgraver's cab is a separate piece? C'mon.
Hercules does have size going for it. That counts for something, for sure. But I think MakeToys has really nailed the aesthetic. Giant does a better job of capturing the "modernized G1" feel of the Hasbro Classics lines.
I look forward to seeing the finished product; I suspect this will be hard for me to pass up.

Your estimate seems rather conservative. I think you should have multiplied the figure by three.

Where did you get that number from? I may be able to afford it.
Posted by xyl360 on November 10th, 2011 @ 5:36am CST
To each his own though, we all have our tastes, but this offering is one that I'll be passing on. Herc is certainly more costly, but well worth the money for me. The thing I like about Classics/Generations etc. is that they DON'T look exactly like their G1 counterparts, they only homage them, which Hercules does for the Constructicons, this one is too close to G1 for me, and if I wanted that, I'd just find an oversized KO Devistator for a fraction of the price of this thing.

Of course, that's for 5/6 of them. Long Haul is an interesting enigma. He's good looking enough, but I do really, really, really like my TFC Long Haul (Heavy Labor) a lot. Neither version does him very similarly to the original, which I find a little disappointing. Using the dumpbed as the arms is okay, but seems like there is a lot of potential for it to be legs.
Anyway, I will need to get this version of them all as well. The Scavenger, Scrapper, and Mixmaster being the main reasons to buy. And of course, the ultimate combined mode.

Very true, a large purple hand on his back in robot mode looks stupid and it is my only complaint about the fig. It does however incorporate very well in vehicle mode. It doesn't look like a hand when seen from behind. Giant Hook has a large head on display in vehicle mode and by the looks of things the Devy head will be kissing Hooks ass in robot mode. Dr. Crank wins IMO.

I wouldn't say TFC's Constructicons look nothing like the originals. It's pretty obvious who they are meant to be. With the exception of Mixmaster and Hook (which both look superb, minus the abundance of head on Hook), I'd say MakeToy's Constructicons are no more G1 accurate than TFC's.
I'm not a huge fan of the kibble: the previously mentioned heads, Long Haul seeming to have an engine on the back of his bucket, and where do the trailers go when they transform to robot mode? Plus, each figure's unique equipment seems quite small.
On the flip-side, the transformations look extraordinary and posability is highly impressive: look at Giant's ankle!!!
I can't see any reason why one set of 3rd party Constructicons would be better than the other (except for the fact that we've actually got orders for Hercules ) I think it simply comes down to personal preference and available funds. Really wish I could get both.

I was looking at this on my cellphone earlier and I was going to complain about a number of things, the trailers, the visible combiner kibble, the small-ish head.
But honestly, seeing it now on a big screen. Who gives a crap? This looks amazing! I love how different and full of personality each separate bot looks. And the combined mode looks totally badass as well. This will look amazing on my classics shelf alongside Bruticus, facing off (unfairly) against Superion.
I complain about price and being broke all the time, but I just have to make it work. I've done so with FP in the past, I need to continue with Maketoys.

As far as any devastator being too big, I just can't get my head around that statement.
