Notably, while we saw painted prototypes at San Diego Comic Con, these displays appear to be composed of finished samples - meaning this is an even better impression of what the final toys will look like! Featured in the display are Micromasters, both Battle Masters revealed so far, Hound, Sideswipe, Cog, a gray-prototype Ultra Magnus (the odd one out not being colored), and way too many Optimus Primes. This is also further evidence of the continuing "brand unity" between Hasbro and Takara-Tomy, as the figures do appear to be identical between the two companies' lines.
Check out the images below, and share your thoughts in the Energon Pub Forums! And don't forget to stay tuned for more images from various toylines, as WonFes rolls ever onward!

MagicDeath wrote:What happened to Hound's opaque windows? Were those only from the stock CG renders, or is this sample different than the one at SDCC?
the SDCC were hand painted more or less figurines. Mock ups. Not sure why they painted the windows on those, but these are likely the first toys off the assembly line. Not quite rubber stamped with HasTak's seal of approval, but 98% of the way there.
personally, I am glad he has a windshield and not a blast shield.

But I am starting to really cool off about it now. There’s no way I’m not gonna buy it, but I am starting to lean back towards “Maybe the CW Mags is the better figure. I do however like the Siege Magnus is gonna have 5mm hands so I can use the Dr. Wu hammer and gun that doesn’t quite sit.in CW’s hands right. I hope someone comes out with Blue Bolts for him. That was a SiCK weapons platform.
Prime’s red plastic looks thin. Maybe its just me?
Seeing Sideswipe again, he’s still a pass. And while I like what they are doing with Cog, he’s not a priority. I don’t have Max, so there’s that) Will wait for SixGun.
I AM however getting more excited for Hound. I am glad to see he has a windshield. And Ironhide looks like a lot of fun. I just hope we get a Ratchet.

Now for some backtracking. I forgot to point this out when everyone was trying to decipher the second poster and I'm surprised nobody else did. Check out who's hanging out in the background. It's nothing we didn't assume was happening, but it's nice to see:
Wheeljack, plus Red Alert again.
And at first I thought this was Ironhide, but the chest is all wrong so maybe it's Impactor who won the fan poll with Mirage. Doesn't seem quite right either.

Also, what's up with both Takara and Hasbro coloring the vents on Optimus Prime's shins gray? What is that from!? It's not G1 toy sticker or paint detail, and it's not from the original cartoon either, but even MP-10 includes those gray shins for some reason. It boggles the mind.

Still no cons though, I hope they are good enough to live up to the hype

On 's display and int he official images they are black which I prefer.
Maybe that's a difference between the and the release.

I don't want to burst the hope balloon here, but there is and will be no difference between the two releases since the unification of the companies. There may still be changes in paint though, before they hit mass release in September!
EDIT: I just realised... they.. they All have ankle tilts.

I know that and that's what makes me wonder. I guess the version at Wonderfest will be the final release version but we will see...Va'al wrote:Lunatic Prime wrote:Hound's feet/toes are green now

What do you exactly mean by that now?Va'al wrote:There may still be changes in paint though, before they hit mass release in September!

Yes, they said at SDCC that improved articulation, paintjob etc. instead of including an (active) gimmick to address collectors more.

I just hadn't fully realised that all the figures in the line (bar Micro and Battle Masters) had ankle tilts too.

That neither the hand painted Hasbro display from SDCC, not the Wonderfest Takara version might be the final retail version! Even official images can often be early versions of the final colour scheme, so either option is still valid, and we'll only know once they hit retail.

Why those colors for the Autobot insignia?
Optimus even has wrist swivels now unlike the PotP Leader. But I think no forward and backward ankle.Va'al wrote:I just hadn't fully realised that all the figures in the line (bar Micro and Battle Masters) had ankle tilts too.
True. Very good examples for that are TLK Leader Megs and PotP Swoop.Va'al wrote:Lunatic Prime wrote:What do you exactly mean by that now?Va'al wrote:There may still be changes in paint though, before they hit mass release in September!

Ask the totally hunky make-up guys.
I think we were all just having fun, and Hasbro appreciated.

As he's white for the most part I guess he's pretty good for custom paint jobs
Or use a Gundam Marker brush type (GM20 for example) and cotton swabs.

I can't wait for in hand pics of um mind, and see the balance between paint apps and moulded details they achieve.

I really like the battle worn decos, just wish they used more of it.
The boxart is killer! love it.
I love how detailed the Magnus prototype is. I like busy designs like that.

Huh. So maybe THAT is why the price raise: slightly better paint and articulation.

Either use rubbing alcohol and a lot of rubbing or just overpaint it.
But do you really not want the weathering and battle marks?

JelZe GoldRabbit wrote:I get there are fans of that level of sculpted detail, I do. But at times the detailing just makes the figure look too busy. One reason I didn't like Studio Series Grimlock: simply too much. I guess it'll grow on me eventually with more figures following that train of thought.
That's why I like the movie toys so much, and especially Grimlock: the level and attention to detail.
And honestly, I'm very much attracted to the line because of the detail and battle paint. If we are truly going to do a "War" theme, both of those are great, it's why the movie toys, with the live action fierce brutal combat idea, attract me.
While I wish we were getting something close to the WFC/FOC games (especially if we could get a FOC Metroplex), the paint and detail are still good here, and in my opinion, a nice new refreshing feel.

You are not alone, man. I too would purchase this grey version in a heartbeat. Siege UM level of detail is so insane, I almost forgot this is a figure is way under $100 and not some premium statue which cost over 1K. I don't recall seeing this amount of greeble in any TF before. The nice thing about the grey prototype/ monotone figure is that you appreciate the detail more in contrast to colors.
As a huge armor UM fan, this is like a dream...especially when that dream is a reality. I can't wait to have him in my collection. Take that MP22!! *I love my MP22 by the way*

Regarding the level of detail... eh. Personally I think using flat space to break up detailing can go a long way. Some like sideswipe do it pretty well, some like chromia start to look like the death star. I think for once the way that paint and colour tends to mask some detail might be a good thing.
Speaking of paint though, that battle damage... if it were more consistent I'd potentially be on board. As it is, it kinda looks like Optimus' thighs were in a fight, but his shins got out unscathed*, making it seem a little forced. I'll wait till we see in-hand, finalised figures to pass proper judgement though.
*(a made-up example, I've not actually checked Prime's legs)

Exactly, I wanted to say too. That's what this much mass of greeble looks like sometimes. Not to mention the dust that will be collected in all those grooves.
But regardless, since I already have a "perfect cartoon-accurate" Ultra Magnus I'm looking forward to this one with its two gimmicks/features (White Convoy + RID truck.)
Optimus Prime aside, I still haven't decided if I'm gonna buy characters I already have though, shelf space an' all.
