As many of you remember, last Thursday, Hasbro dropped a surprise bombshell on us with the revealing of a Titans Return Grotusque complete with Titan Master Fengul and Scorponok, rounding out the Monsterbot trio and the quadruplet of diecast Titan Masters. Yours truly was able to get a hold one of these figures, and I would now like to tell you why Grotusque is one of the best deluxes of Titans Return and why Scorponok is fun too.

For the official Seibertron galleries, you can check out the reveal gallery and the display gallery. You can also view G1 Grotusque for comparisons to his original form.

We will start with the bot mode, and I apologize now for the lighting of the images.

Bot mode is gorgeous, and very well painted. The bot mode is fun to look at, with the puffed out chest area complete with the beast mode lower jaw area proudly standing front and center. The colors are really loud and great on this figure, with the shoulders getting some surprisingly good attention to detail. He even has that little triangle dead center of his chest.

The head sculpt is pretty good, though I wish it was a little closer to the G1 toy's flirty/pouting face, but it is still nice regardless. He still does look grumpy though!

Now this mold is a retool of Titans Return Twinferno, his fellow deluxe Monsterbot. The retool is very obvious in the lower part of the body, with everything from the waist down being the same as Twinferno, just in new colors. The wings are also the same, as are the guns. The arms, head, and upper chest area, however, are new, and it really helps him stand out from his Monster-mate. The Titan Master's body is also the same, though the head is new (to be seen later).

Now up first for comparisons, here we have the Monsterbot trio together at last! While it is a bummer that Repugnus is not a deluxe as well, he still looks cool enough, and you can always play musical chairs with the heads!

Transformation on the lower body is the same as Twinferno, but the upper body has some nice new tricks. The arms are pretty basic, rotating 180 degrees at the bicep and having some flip out beast claws, but the new beast head is where the transformation shines. the lower jaw folds out of the upper chest while the upper beast head flips up over from the back.

And the result is a pretty great beast mode! Now anyone who likes Monsterbots will remember: they are supposed to be ugly as sin, it's part of their thing. They are supposed to be ugly monsters that scare people, and this guy does it very well. His beast mode is great in it's ugliness, looking so good yet so bad all at the same time. A great beast mode, the mode where he really shines!

Also of note, the beast head has tabs on the side for his guns. While they can store on his back like Twinferno, you can also mount them on the beast head. This is more for robot mode storage, but it's a really funny thing you can do in beast mode!

Here we have the Monsterbots in beast mode, and all 3 shine together here. They are a perfect team, and I am really glad I got to complete the team.

Lastly, we'll take a brief look at Scorponok, who finally got his release, and Fengul! The robot mode for Scorponok is the same as Ultra Magnus and Thunderwing, and is once again diecast. It looks pretty nice, and I enjoy the colors. Fengul is based on Daburu, Twinferno's Titan Master, but with a new head based on a saber tooth tigers, which is yet another battle beast reference! The paint work on Fengul is really good too, the best of the line.

Below, you can check out Fengul, and then a comparison with the 3 Monsterbots and Scorponoks Titan Master robot modes.

And finally today, Scorponok in head mode. It's a nice head, yet feels a bit too small, like this was a head that really needed the voyager treatment with the things deploying on either side to beef it up. The Head looks really funny on Grotusque, but really works with Tidal Wave!

In conclusion, this whole set is a great pickup. Grotusque is the best of the Monsterbots here, and is really one of the best deluxes of the whole line. I really enjoy this figure, everything about him is dumb, fun, ugly, beautiful, and he should be a figure people actively hunt down.

Scorponok is pretty cool too. While he is not my favorite Titan Master, he is still really cool, and will be a great addition to his larger generations toy when we finally get one.

While this set was only available for about an hour on HasbroToyShop last Thursday, it will be available again online soon, much like Arcee, so keep your optics tuned for all the latest Grotusque and Scorponok news here!

:BOT: :BOT: :BOT: :BOT: :BOT: out of :BOT: :BOT: :BOT: :BOT: :BOT:

Also, thanks to Stuartmaximus, we have word that Peaugh uploaded his video review for the Grotusque set, if you would like to check that out as well.

Firstly, thanks for a lovely picture eview that I can read and stufy at my leisure instead of videos.

Still waiting on my Grotusque, (Am I the only one who opted for he cheap shipping? :-P ) does he have the floppy hip diaper thing going that Doublecross does? And does the tail want to peg together or is that still a problem?

I just went with whatever shipping was default. And I live only 2 hours from the HTS center, so I get things quickly.

the diaper and tail are zero issues. there isn't a flaw with my figure at all

does the Geotusque have a fake spark mechanism wheel like twinferno did? Not sure why they try to put faction symbols over a pin either but it's still looks a decent figure and Scorps head does look good on tidal wave.

The only thing on his clear plastic chest panel is a small hole, no sparker thingy. Probably had to sacrifice it for the chest to work transformation wise

The arms are mistransformed for beast mode. You're suppose to lift the should panels, lift the arms by the bicep like he's got both arms over his head and turn the entire arm from the shoulder 180 degrees instead of just rotating that bicep around.

I'm honestly happier with them as they are. the shoulder rotation really doesn't make much of a difference. Plus you said that, I skipped over that part in the instructions, and I have him right now with me and tried it

Worth noting is that G1 Doublecross bucks the trend by having his sparker gimmick in his chest, whereas Repugnus' and Grotusque's were inside the mouth. That said, the plunger detail is absent from the Titans Return version.

I just figured Id mention it. I honestly I didn't do the arms. Before I said "it's a shame there's nothing to do with the arms really" then I noticed the panels and went back to stock photos and said "oh there is something!"

Yeah they don't go all the way down but I like they have some form of transformation other than ratatong the bicep

What impress me the most about that Grotusk is not Twinferno's great remoldings. It's the fact the they gave the titan master a new, unique head that is also well painted!

There's much love and effort in this figure. ;)^

Well the design team at NYCC stated the figure had some extra detailing, but is it all in the TM head , or does the figure itself look more detailed? Mine doesn't arrive until Friday that's why I'm asking...

Can't wait to get Grotusque (whenever that is), I think he's going to look great with the better painted Takara Tomy Doublecross, especially their Battle Beast heads.

While the figure doesn't have the spark button it the original design art we were shown does. Just a casualty of the design process.

Glad they put all that extra detail into the figure because with a cost of $25 along with tax & shipping I think it came out to $34 for me. That puts it near the price range of a similar Takara release, which I spend the extra money on for the paint & mold differences. Not that I'm complaining about spending the money, I'm actually happy they put some extra effort into these special releases aimed at collectors. Guess I'll see for myself in the next day or two when my shipment arrives.

I don't know what figure you are referring to but if it's Grotusque you are talking about, did you miss the news with all the pictures?

Yes I'm talking about Grotusque, and the news is what I was referring to. They said it has extra details, and all the photos in the world don't compare to actually having the toy in your possession and seeing it with your own eyes, thus why I was asking.

That's a great figure! I am really impatient for Grotesque to be sold at another retailer. I don't know if Toys 'R Us will do a better job than they did with the Chaos on Velocitron set (wasn't available online), or the quantities will be decent (BBTS's shortage of the Siege boxed set), but I'd really like to add this to figure to my collection after missing out on the Hasbro sale. I felt fortunate to get Arcee before it sold out, but no such luck with Grotesque. **Crosses his fingers**

I don't really notice too much extra paint work on the figure. The titan master is where the extra paint really shines out. But the paint work Grotusque has is really good and used in the right places, so he does look pretty good with that regard

It's just Hasbro's way of saying that the figure has more paint apps than the average amount used for a mass retail TR Deluxe figure.

Marketing buzzword then. Okay.
At least, it's true for the Titan Master.

Well, as of now, the Arcee figure set is still available for preorder on TRU and has been up for quite a wile without selling out, so I think that would bode well for Grotusque.

Grotusque and Scorponok just came in today. Now while I wait for Legends Doublecross to pair with him, I'm trying to decide if I should try to track down a Titans Return Repugnus or just mesh him together from the companion pieces to Legends Brawn & Broadside :-?

If it helps, Broadside and Brawn appear to have little to no differences compared to their Titans Return counterparts; and Repugnus' Hasbro version appears to be straight up better. And, naturally, you'd save a lot when it comes to conversion rates and shipping.

Received and opened Grotusque yesterday. Man he is GREAT!

Image
He really is a nice premium figure, and a really well done retool.
My brother had him when we are kids, and I always thought he and the other monsterbots were silly. I couldn't wrap my brain around the mechanical and biological mix. But two things have happened since then.
1. I'm older and more open and excepting of the strange, weird, and unexplainable. 2. Beast wars happened.

Surprised how much happy nostalgia this update conjures in me.

Also, a bit of good luck. Found this evil jerk today at Walmart.

Image
So let me ask y'all this. The shelf was stacked full of Sixshots and nothing interesting on the Deluxe pegs, so my 3 year old and I moved on. As I rounded a corner I saw a cart with a ton of Leader and Voyager boxes, unopened. I spent about 15 minutes looking for an employee. No go. I decided to open a Leader box and there was Overlord. I scanned him at self check out and he came up as "unrecognized item". I scanned it again, and it came up "Movie and TV $39.70. I ran with it.

Does this make me a jerk? I mean Walmart is in the bizz of selling stuff, and I'm in the bizz of buying said stuff. It's all good and capitalistic, right?

I've opened cases before when they're on a cart but not being put out. Don't worry about it. As for the price, I'm pretty sure that they've been selling leaders for $40 lately.

Why would that make you a jerk? The only thing you did was open boxes. The price you paid is the normal TR Leader price at Walmart (at least that is what my regional Walmart list them for in stores), so I would say it's fine.

I'd have my father-in-law (who works at Walmart) say it's their fault for leaving cases unattended, and they needed to be stocked anyway so... It's not something that would win you points with some, but it's not illegal ;)

As for Overlord himself, I spotted him yesterday, used the price scanner, didn't come up. Apparently the system has not been updated with this latest product. I didn't get him, because I don't like the hassle associated with unknown prices, let alone suggesting one leading me to be.... *gasp* dishonest

No not at all. last year I and some other had the fiasco of having wave 3 TM's not in Walmarts system yet. I almost had mine confiscated! But then I went back and just scanned other TM's in place of the ones that would not scan. Glad you got Overlord to scan somehow. I've looked at unopened cases before, but all I see is TLK merch (yuck) so I don't bother, if I saw a case of TR anything, you bet I'd open it, if there were no employees around, or definitely ask if employees were around. You (we, I...) are not stealing, just trying to get the merch out efficiently...

Btw...may I ask whereabouts you are? I haven't seen any Overlords spotted on the West Coast that I am aware of, just trying to figure how much longer I may have to wait.

Where are the comparison shots with the original Grotusque figure? I have one (though he's missing a wing and one of his monster legs is broken, but functional enough), but still don't have the TR so I'd like to see the two together.

Had I won an auction back in March for a G1 Grotusque, I could have shown you. He's a G1 figure that I do plan to get, just don't have him yet

So Broadside. Plane mode pretty much universally panned, and while his carrier mode is objectively pretty good and there are those who love it, the idea of an aircraft carrier mode has never seemed partiularly... playable, to me? Like moreso than most things, it's just a plank that sits there - it doesn't swoosh like a jet, or roll like a car, if just "floats" in the "ocean" of one's imagination. Call me uninspired, but the idea of an aircraft carrier altmode never sparked much positivity in me, because I couldn't think of anything interesting to do with it, especially at the scale it is (i.e. way too tiny for basically everything).

Until now.

Hecks yeah. :michaelbay: (Please excuse the awful lighting and amateruish background, I just made the best of what I had to hand.)

Honestly this is close to the most fun I've had with Broadside since I got him - and whatever that says about the toy itself, good or bad, and least I'm finally properly happy that I picked it up :D

Thanks! :D I actually tried to do the same sort of thing with TR Hot Rod in place of Unit-02 back when I first got Broadside, but... yeah, it looked pretty rubbish, so much so that I didn't even bother taking a picture. (Plus an oddly-contorted Construct-Bots Starscream standing in for Gaghiel, now that didn't work in the slightest...)

Neon Genesis Evangelion, an anime from the mid-90s (also where the model kit's from; I was doing my best to replicate a scene using Broadside as the aircraft carrier that appeared in said scene). It's got giant robots, but those aren't really the focus in all honesty - it's way more character-focused and ends up dealing a lot with psychology and difficulties in human interaction. I'd recommend it personally, but it's definitely one of those shows where it'd be understandable if it wasn't your thing.

That said, I'm sure I've pushed the bounds of this topic far enough :P . To bring over a relevant discussion from the Legends thread: a poster over there mentioned a 'hairline windshield crack' on every TR Hot Rod they'd seen. A couple others chimed in saying theirs appeared to be fine, and I can't see anything wrong with my Hot Rod either, but has anyone else got that on their copies? Is it something to be genuinely concerned (or at least careful) about, or just exaggerated rhetoric on the part of the original poster?

Rebuild Eva-02 replicating a scene from the original TV series triggering my autism aside, that's great. Love it!

I'd love to combine them into that space cruiser, but still no luck finding Misfore or Slugslinger in Oregon. Plenty of Chromedome, Blurr, Scourge and Getaway to go around, though....
