One of the most recognizable characters from the TRANSFORMERS brand lore, SOUNDWAVE is making a retro-comeback for San Diego Comic-Con in honor of the brand's 25th Anniversary. Hasbro is re-releasing the original 1984 edition of the figure that will include four of the SOUNDWAVE character's cassettes, two of which have not been released since the 80's. The cassette characters include BUZZSAW, LASERBEAK, RATBAT and RAVAGE. The four figures fully convert between robot and cassette mode and fit into SOUNDWAVE when in cassette mode.

No no no, you're missing the point.
Take a nostalgia fueled event, like a comic convention...provide an iconic character in an iconic toy...give him lots of stuff (tapes)...and people will LOVE IT.
Collectors don't have to groan about it, because they likely have it already in one form or another, but for everyone else...it's a hook back into the hobby.
Or at least it's a snack that makes people say...'Wow, I miss having Transformers...I wonder what's on the shelves now.'

Couldn't that have been accomplished, while still giving the collector something he wants by using Soundblaster instead of Soundwave?
I'd be all over this if it were Soundblaster, but with just buying the TRU exclusive reissue from the Classics line only a couple years ago, I'm not all that interested in owning another one.

If I wasn't collecting the Encore cassettes I would be all over this.

No way.
Only hardcore TF fans know who Soundblaster is.
The general population likes and wants to see Soundwave.

I have the TRU version, so I don't need this, but it's perversely tempting. Soundwave is just that cool.

have they made his body thinner in these re-issues so this was the only way to make the cassettes fit or is it another reason?

In Japanese G1 (post American G1), Soundwave and Broadcast (Blaster) killed each other and were rebuilt as Soundblaster and Twincast.
When Takara released the figures, they remolded the tape compartment on Soundblaster to fit more than one tape.
The TRU exclusive Soundwave and Comic-Con Soundwave just use the Soundblaster mold.
Other experts can go in deeper detail, but that's the barebones of it.

Hasbrotoyshop lists the SDCC exclusives on their website after the convention ends. Buy it online like Nemesis Prime last year.

Still a release worth picking up when the page for it is up on HTS. I think I might even get it (though I bought the TRU release as well), and keep this one MISB like I did for Overload.

I have the TRU reissue and still might snag one of these if for no other reason than just the sheer nostalgia of 4 minions being commanded by Soundwave at once!

To -really- make people take notice, they should use gold version of the cassette weapons...

Curse convention excucives.

I do take offense at their description of this as the "original 1984 version of the toy"... since this is clearly the later, Soundblaster version, colored in original Soundwave colors.

Last year I believe it was more like they were SDCC Exclusives, and if there were any extra they MIGHT have them at HasbroToyShop.com, I'm 99% sure that's how they were billed.
I would be shocked if there weren't some left. Maybe not as many as there were this past year, though.

To build on that, remember that Soundwave and Ravage will be hitting the shelves soon as a ROTF preview figure. If this exclusive reminds the non Transformers fan who he is then they will snap up the preview figure when it is released and excite them about the upcomming movie. It is a good marketing ploy by Hasbro. Part of me does wish they substituted Ravage and Laserbeak for Rumble and Frenzy but what you gonna do.

I would like a soundwave that can stand and blend in with the rest of my classic/ henkai/ universe/ figures. hell they released a new ravage, why cant they make a new classics mold for soundwave???
that would have been an awesome sdcc exclusive.

The reason they can't/wouldn't do something like that is because these "exclusives" are pretty much exclusively repaints of existing figures. Once in a while they will toss us a bone and give us a new bodypart such as a head. There are 2 reasons it is done this way. The first reason is simply cost, for the amount of figures they would make for an exclusive (which would be much smaller than a regular run) they'd lose their shirt making the mold. The second reason is that if you make a cool enough exclusive, especially of a figure we've been waiting for and it sells out, there will be collectors all over complaining "Why didn't Hasbro make that figure available for everyone for $9.99"
I hope that helps.

At last year's SDCC, they HasbroToyShop.com booth had images of everything they were selling around the booth. Many of them (like the Cobra Commander figs) had "SDCC Exclusive!" by the items. The Transformers, notably, DID NOT.
On a side note, I am pleased to note that the Transformers Collector's Club has confirmed that this will be the SINGLE-CASSETTE version of Soundwave, and NOT the double-door Soundblaster version. Intriguing...

Hasbro Toy Shop is absolutely useless for me.
They don't ship to Canada.
