Why, it almost sounds like ... crowd funding!

Dude there’s going to be thousands and thousands of people walking all over. That much traffic causes some rumbling. He can support his weight but they really don’t want him to fall over with that much movement all over. Why do you think figures usually glued to the displays at these? They don’t want them falling over

Exactly.
Because honestly, that GIANT thing would never, ever find it's way into standard brick-n-mortar stores. Such a figure is a high risk endeavour. So the "backed by fans" plan is the most logical way to approach things.
…
Aw, screw it. The more I deny it, the more I want it.
So... Instead of a 3rd Dollfie Dream...

,,,,,,aaaaaaaaaand backed.

It suck that I have to pay taxes. However, this mean that I will not have to pay the 10$CAN surcharge when the thing go through customs and I will not have any more customs to pay. Furthermore, the thing is very, VERY cheap to ship for some reasons.

Oh, and how am I gonna pay in such a short notice?

Exactly. If they presented this to retailers they would be told "Your bargaining posture is highly dubious." And wouldn't get the "But very well."

Plus, compared to MP Optimus Prime 3.0 that is somewhat similarly priced, Optimus would take much, much less shelf space than this insane Unicron. Plus it's Optimus freaking Prime. Not some "random nobody". Thus, why Optimus will find it's way into stores despite the CAN600$+ he will go for, but never that Unicron.
And know what? I wouldn't have it any other way. I'd even go as far as suggesting that big boxsets like Combiner Wars sets or Titans should be online exclusives only. Maybe with free shipping if they have the deals. Because those boxes sure take a lot of space on shelves and because they are big, they often get badly distributed among individual retailers of the store chain. Plus customers at some stores act like savage apes and destroy everything in their path, making those big boxes prime targets for kicks and partial thieving.
No wonder Walmart are online only for such big collectibles.

Oh and just to be sure, the planet stand will be included, right?

1) You are an absolute madman and I love you.
2) Yes indeed, the stand is included. I wonder what else could be though. I kinda want some laser eye beams, or that gravity beam for planet mode.

If you really, REALLY want it and work to get it, Karma will smile upon you.
Seriously.
That's how I got my 2 Dollfie Dream dolls. Both times I plunged head first into the unknown and both times, circumstances made me happen upon unexpected money to pay the bills. Selling pricey figures or bonus work. So it will work a 3rd time for Unicron.

Congrats! And yeah, the taxes would be paid here if you found him at retail anyways so it evens out. Good thing the shipping is cheap for a 19 pound item.

It's surprising, really.
Not to go off topic, but everywhere I look, it would cost 60-70$US at the bare minimum to ship this 1/8 figure from Japan via EMS. The box is big, but will no way be near as big as Unicron. That's why I always nope'd over this 100$ Hatsune Miku Love is War DX.

And how many times did we saw a paper clip on sale on ebay for 30$ of shipping? Plus I'm sure that if I buy a normal deluxe TF off Pulse, it will be 30$ of Fedex shipping anyway, like for the old HTS. So, that Unicron basically ship for the price of a Deluxe. It's baffling but I will not protest in that case.
(Also, screw you, custom fees with your 10$CAN extra "just because". I already paid all taxes!)
Forgot to ask, Will, are you getting that Unicron? I remember you said that Metroplex was "too big" so how about this one?

So for once the people who are buying these just to sell them on the secondary market are on our side?
