For starters, this really grinds my gears, to quoteth Peter Griffin...
on the TRANSFORMERS side of things, this story takes place between the miniseries INFILTRATION and ESCALATION, just after Optimus Prime has arrived to take command of the Autobots on Earth. But you don't need to know any of that to enjoy the story.
They claim we don't need to know anything about either series to know what's going on. Which is all well and good in principle, but kinda goes against the grain when they try to work it into their respective continuities. Now, I don't follow New Avengers, so I really couldn't care less (certain people may, and are certainly free to, disagree), but as for Transformers, there is a problem. By having the series take place between the two current story arcs, and guaranteeing that one of the 'cons appearing will be dead by the end, it causes major problems, since all the 'cons shown to be around at the end of Infiltration are around in Escalation.
Which brings me to my next point:
The Autobots are basically Prowl's team from INFILTRATION: Ratchet, Bumblebee, and Jazz, now led by Optimus Prime, with a brief appearance by Wheeljack. There are a lot of Decepticons, including one who hasn't yet been seen in the IDW continuity.
First off, they've forgotten Ironhide and Sunstreaker. I know Sunstreaker gets totaled in Escalation, but this takes place before that, so that's a non-concern. Forgetting that, though, is the very major fact that it appears that they'll be bringing in a new guy just for the hell of it (or maybe not, if this new guy is destined to be the one that ends up getting the dead mark...)
Either way, the more interviews they do to pimp this, the more obvious it becomes that they're trying to drum up support for it, knowing full well that the all likelihood of it going over is nil.

Yeah, all those interviews for Marvel's other crossovers and spin-offs at the moment, such as Marvel Zombies, definitely proved to be signs of the apocalypse...
Also: CNI has more Transformers focus than most comics sites, because they have fans involved (it's a related project to TFormers and a bunch of other TF sites) and actively go out and try to get interviews, since it brings in visitors and ad revenue.
Casual interest and the timing's good.
