Grand Galvatron combines the best of Japanese Transformers history while giving the fans some great figures. Obviously the standouts will be Starscream and Thrust, both featuring new heads that will get fans salivating at the possibilities. At the end of the day these are repaints, so we know what we're getting in terms of transformation, and durability. Now to figure out what to do with my Combiner Wars Cyclonus.
The latest tweets from TF Yuki feature Grand Galvatron as well. Especially the fact that this combiner can use upcoming Legends Galvatron's cannon. Enjoy!

I really want this set but j can't justify the price of it. Hopefully grand galvatron like the rest of Takaras sets stay in stock for a while. Maybe in 6 months I can get him.

The head sculpts for both are fantastic. The very manga/anime looking Starscream head, and the new take on Armada Thrust is great (though I would have liked to see the "camo" paint that the original Armada Thrust had). I'd love to see all 6 of the Seekers done as Combiners but am happy for now with what we've got.
Great set, just feel like they mixed up the robot mode bodies for Armada Thrust and Ghost Starscream.

Ha! I said this a couple posts back. Seems to be a very odd decision on Takara's part. But it really has no effect on my immense enjoyment of the set in any way.Seibertron wrote:Great set, just feel like they mixed up the robot mode bodies for Armada Thrust and Ghost Starscream.
Seibs, I have a ton of translucent toys, (mostly Microman) but not a lot of TFs. Have you ever seen this translucent paint they used on Starscream, on other TFs before?

The mold used for Thrust would have been a much better choice for Starscream's robot and jet modes. I can't figure out why they did that unless they feel the "wings" in robot mode are more important than the jet mode, the engine inlets (which would be behind his shoulders but still visible in robot mode, and the overall look of the chest.

I dunno whose decision it was, but if you look under airraid, there's a notch cut out for a conehead to fit, so this was built into the mold from the very start, it was likely chosen because the silhouette of the airraids cockpit piece looks more like thrusts armada jet mode than the angled skydive does and vice-versa for the raptor; not saying it's perfect, but it's something.

That said, I agree in wishing that the Starscream head had been pretooled to the Air Raid mold and the Conehead head pretooled to the Skydive mold, as not only would doing so have given Starscream and Thrust more accurate altmodes but the rectangles on the Air Raid mold's chest would have worked well as Starscream's pectorals.
However, I have seen one decent argument for the way they were done as they are. The Skydive mold's torso is built more like the tradition Seeker torso, complete with shoulder notches that emulate Starscream's shoulder intakes, while the wide and boxy build of the Air Raid mold's torso is more evocative of Armada Thrust's own wide and boxy torso, which also enabled one of his boxy pecs to be colored red like on both the original Armada Thrust toy and cartoon model.

Working on the robot mode galleries for Armada Thrust and Ghost Starscream currently. While working on Starscream's, one of the wings popped off very easily which gave me an idea. So I popped off the other wing, flipped them around, and now you end up with wings that are very evocative of G1 Starscream in robot mode. I can't help but think this was the reasoning at some point in the development process. Pics will be in the gallery once it is completed some time tomorrow.

Oh man, the wings being flipped around like that would have made the Skydive mold even more perfect for Thrust since his original toy and cartoon model had his wings flipped around in robot mode as well. Such a missing opportunity for Hasbro having pretooled the heads to opposite molds.Seibertron wrote:Sabrblade wrote:From what I've heard, the heads are tied to specific molds so they very likely couldn't be swapped around.

Speaking of missed opportunities, anyone think Hasbro is gonna milk these molds ('seeker' and 'conehead') at all? Hasbro not using them is so counter to their whole business strategy right now - especially, since they're there already

Imagine if you could make that combiner from the Deviations comic. You could almost do that with the molds and heads available

It's completely the wrong color! Cyclonus should not be blue. I'll stick with my Combiner Wars Cyclonus (though I wish he was closer to G1 Cyclonus or at least a bluer purple instead of a reddish purple). I really like Unite Warriors Cyclonus, he's just flat out the wrong color though. It'd be amazing if it had been purple like he should be.

And from other points in the cartoon when he was blue, but not as bright and vibrant a blue as hr was in the above movie scene:

The rest of the time, he was inconsistently colored varying shades of purple, including the light lavender that Ryan loathes so much.

Yeah, I think its how the wings look in robot mode. However, its possibly about the head on the mold which I have a tough time understanding since I thoght these heads were on seperate molds anyway. Or else we would have a ton of these secondary heads taking space in a Hasbro warehouse out there.

Just curious, but if they were to make one more seeker, would this mold count a s a seeker mold

I think Counterpunch was referring to him over Universe Cyclonus. While the scale for CW Cyclonus is a good size and has a great alt mode seen from the top, I much preffer the transformation for Universe cyclonus and his alt mode when seen in a 360 view. I dislike having the entire bot under a flat ship.

Not sure what you mean by that, I guess it would count as a variant, I just want a fleet of seekers/coneheads for my galvatronus and Bruticus, nothing else really matters in my books.

Except for the movie characters, which Cyclonus was one of, since Floro Dery made those designs first and then Hasbro/Takara turned those into toys. If anything, his original toy got the purple wrong since he was rarely ever as dark a purple as his toy's purple in the movie or cartoon.Seibertron wrote:The cartoon was simplified versions of the toys ...
Though, really, does it matter that much about this particular Cyclonus toy? I mean, this isn't his cartoon body, but an evolved form of it from after Masterforce. Should it matter that much if his new body is colored like or unlike his either cartoon body, his 1986 toy, or anything else?
And it's not like he hasn't been blue before. He was blue in his very first appearance in the movie, in various instances during cartoon, in many instances during The Headmasters, and even on this Japanese DVD cover art:

And I for one think he looks gorgeous in it.

I rather like the blue on this UW Cyclonus. The whole deco is sweet!
Also, personaly, it helps justify having two of the same figure.

Most importantly, I think, would be anything from the original cartoon/movie media that matches the upcoming Transformers Legends release.

Wow. That's an embarrassment of riches in terms of Galvatron screen caps. There's definitely a TON of instances of a very light/pastel shade of purple or purple-ish blue for Galvatron. Even in the original movie, his hue changes from scene to scene. Funny how I never really noticed during any of the dozens of time I've watched the movie before. I think Unicron created Galvatron with some weird mood ring type of metal that changes the intensity of his purple depending on his current emotional state: either crazy-angry or angry-crazy, I guess.

It's quite possibly an attempt at dynamic lighting, but the hues don't really match up in the different lighting environments. You don't go from periwinkle to eggplant purple just by dimming the lights.

To be fair, Bruticus' bios do specify he's one of the overall strongest transformers. Plus every time he fought in the cartoon he either used his fists, Vortex' blades and then there was the one time he used Shockwave.

Agreed, though you do see some of the "proper" dark brown coloring peppered about his robot mode and alt mode, it's just that it's more of a highlight color instead of the main color, which is that light brown. If they had swapped those browns around, I think it would have worked out quite nicely, with light brown highlights to help break up the dark pallet of the original toy and show model a bit. C'est la vie.

I'll second this... This lighter brown color is a bit surprising as well as a little disappointing.
While I don't really mind this color on the chest plate of Brut, on Blast-off it's a little much.
In terms of appearances, I also think Onslaught's blue is a little saturated; should be more of a slate blue.
But other than those couple issues, I think this set looks good. With the PE hands/feet it should be amazing.
