Titans Return Soundwave Concept Sketches from Emiliano Santalucia

From the Facebook page of Emiliano Santalucia, the toy designer for many figures in the Titans Return line including Wolfwire, we have more concept sketches of one of those toys - namely, Leader Class Soundwave! While it's not exactly clear where these sketches fall in the range from 'functional toy concept' (like those for Titans Return Skullsmasher) to simply ideas uninhibited by reality like we saw from Alpha Trion's concept art, it seems as though these designs fall somewhere in the middle, where physical design is considered but isn't totally binding.

The images show a few interesting differences from the final toy, including: an animation-accurate red visor rather than the toy-accurate yellow on the final Hasbro product; the classic blue-and-black chest panel instead of the eventual clear plastic; a much longer shoulder cannon (with an appearance that suggests a possible composite weapon); and more classic shoulder detailing than we ended up with, along with several other small details. On top of that, the accompanying text posts from Santalucia reveal that the sketches were "based on Blaster from the same line" (whether that means the designs were done concurrently or Titans Return Soundwave's design was actually tweaked from Blaster's remains up for debate), and that the figure's altmode was in fact intended to be a soundbar.

Check out the concept images and accompanying posts below, view the Leader Soundwave they ended up becoming in our gallery of the toy, and as always share your thoughts in the Energon Pub!

I forgot I had never posted my sketches for the Titans Return Soundwave! Created in collaboration with Hasbro design team and based on the Blaster figure from the same line

Soundwave alt mode! It was supposed to be a soundbar, but not many got it ;)

I always wished Soundwave and Blaster were Voyagers; they don't always get enough attention in the Generations lines and some figures seem too big or small.

I absolutely love this artwork! It almost looks like what Soundwave could have looked like in Transformers: Energon. :CON:

Kinda need Astrotrain to complete the trio, so I guess finding a place which still sale him would be another factor to consider. This is a bit harder than it look because I initially passed up on Astrotrain when he was shelfwarming but now that Octane and Blitzwing are the one clogging up the store I regret not picking him up. :-(

So, Blitzwing and Octane: thoughts on these two? Don't have a previous version of the mold of these two but I do have Sentinel in the Astrotrain mold.

Mind you, I am saving up for Power of the Primes once it hit and the triple-changer trio weren't originally in my collecting plans...

I'm not sure if you are still undecided, but I did see a couple Astrotrains at Target this weekend, so he might not be as hard to find.

This is something we don't see very often! @JesseWittenrich on Twitter reports having received Titan Master Ramhorn from a pre-order at Entertainment Earth, and has noted a surprising running change to the figure. Running changes are often small changes to details or fixes for minor issues, but in this case, no less has changed than the very base plastic color of the toy!

Jesse shares an image comparing this new Ramhorn to a copy he'd acquired earlier this year, showing that the browns are very noticeably different between the two versions. The previous version's brown is lighter and has more of an orange hue, while the presumed variant has a much darker and richer base color - this applies to all brown plastic on the toy, both the rhino-vehicle and the Titan Master figure itself. Even more strangely, neither shade of brown appears to match either the G1 cartoon model or the G1 toy perfectly, the new brown even less so than the old; a running change for more G1-accurate coloring seems unlikely as far as reasoning goes.

It's still unknown at the moment why this running change to the figure exists or what its distribution situation is. Other Twitter users report receiving the original Ramhorn variant in orders of an entire Titan Master case (also from Entertainment Earth) earlier in the year, while Jesse's copy came from the listing for a single Ramhorn figure. For the time being, check out the comparison image below, let us know what you think in the Energon Pub forums, and stay tuned to Seibertron.com for any further updates on this strange occurrence!

Entertainment Earth Ramhorn (on card) vs Ramhorn purchased back in July (loose). The brown is quite noticeably different.

Odd, Ramhorn didn't really need any changing... Would it have something to do with the upcoming Amhorn drone included with Legends Perceptor?

I'm not sure, but it doesn't seem like there's any direct connection. LG Ramhorn('s drone) has a different brown again - much closer to the cartoon, and probably the toy, than either of these in fact - so it seems unlikely to me that there's any causation here.

Always possible I suppose, and it is pretty much the best idea we have to go on for now. Very odd.

Okay, so now I'm confused. I also have mine on preorder and my account says it isn't shipping until January 2018 (so much for it being a stocking stuffer).

Same thing happened to me. The order status now says backorder, so I think they took more preorders than they actually received, and we now have to wait for a restock that may or may not come. :(

So I'm messing around with Krok and it occurred to me that he really has a ton of paint on him. It's like Hasbro thought being a repaint of Skullsmasher wasn't enough so they went all out on the paint job. I think the only purple that isn't painted is his elbows, knees, the crocodile neck and the joint that connects it to Krok's back (plus the Titan Master). That's pretty crazy, especially when you consider they painted the inside of the tail for no practical reason. They also went to the trouble of matching the front and back legs when they could have easily simplified the back legs. He does lack tampos, but I don't consider those a necessity. Overall I'm really impressed by the end result and glad to have him.

Now I just need to find Quake...

Maybe the color shouldnt matter because it actually homages concept art for an unreleased Japanese headmaster. They shouldnt have even called him Ramhorn. Trying to kill two birds with one stone was the cheap way out.

Only the head homages the rhino Headmaster. The rhino vehicle itself is still very much Ramhorn's rhino mode design.

Outside of the guns on his side, its kind of hard to distinguish one rhino from another. Im not denying that they didnt put some cassette ramhorn in it. Im just saying I like him better with shuffler and lione and I will try to ignore his side guns. (If I ever find him)

Due to already having and not wanting (I'm on a budget) what I don't have in the revision shelf stocking waves I was not planning to be able to take advantage of Meijer's BOGO 50% sale this week. But I looked anyway and saw one lonely TR Kickback. So then I had to decide if I wanted to get 50% off TR Apeface or if I wanted to finally pick up TR Triggerhappy. There were 2 Triggerhappys and one had a perfectly painted face so I chose to go ahead and get him. I love this figure. I love the look and the transformation and the paint and the weapon options.

Kickback is also awesome and I am looking forward to picking up Skrapnel and Bombshell when they get re-released in PotP (I would have picked up Bombshell during CW had I known we'd be getting Kickback and a Skrapnel re-release so thanks to :HASBRO: for letting us know about that this time).

But I have one small issue: The head connection joint is very tight on my Triggerhappy. I have found a way to slide the head in on an angle like I do with Hot Rod but there is still more resistance than I would like. I was wondering if anyone else has this minor issue and if it will loosen up in time?

Well I guess this is as close as we get to an official announcement for Grotusque at TRU in the US. His listing just showed up on TRU.com today. He is currently showing out of stock, so keep your eyes on their website. I actually went to my local store and had them look it up. They indicated they had none in stock and none showing in the warehouse or on the way, so my guess is that they are just putting the item into their system and it should be available soon.

Dude, good call on Triggerhappy. To many (myself included) he is the best design in all of TR.

I haven't had the head issue on my Triggerhappy, but I did have an extremely tight head joint on Perceptor. In fact, the first time I removed the head right out of the package, the TM head actually pulled out of the TM body and stayed in Perceptor's body. The good news there is after a few times of putting the head on and taking it off very carefully, the joint loosened up and is about as tight as the rest of them now.

Interesting, I just check a little while ago and he didn't show up in my search. They do have Seaspray and Cosmos in stock now if anyone is looking for them.

Its weird, you won't find it by searching transformers. I have only found it by searching the name Grotusque. Which I've been doing every frigging day since he was spotted in Hong Kong TRU's, Thank Hasbro for keeping us informed.

That tells me it was probably meant to be behind the scenes until they had everything lined up in their warehouses.

Well, Seibertronians, the day is almost here! Finally, after several weeks of waiting, Titans Return Grotusque has finally been listed on the Toys R Us Website!
While not in stock or available to order yet, the Twinferno remold's listing is currently active, with a list price of $24.99,
but is oddly on sale right now for $19.99. It’s unknown at this time if the current sale price will still be valid when the figure comes in stock.

Just like Titans Return Arcee, the figure is a Toys R Us exclusive, so you won't be seeing him in any other stores. Thanks to this listing we also get a bio for Grotusque himself, as well as his Titan Master Fengul, and his bonus Titan Master Scorponok!

Imagine harnessing the power of not 1 Titan Master but 2, with this special edition Transformers Grotusque 3-figure pack featuring a Titans Return Deluxe Class figure, a Titan Master figure, and a special edition die-cast Titan Master figure. The Titan Master figure becomes the head of Deluxe, Voyager, and Leader Class Titans Return figures (each sold separately).

In Titans Return, the Autobots and Decepticons unite with Titan Masters, small bots that carry a power boost. Titan Masters are key to controlling an ancient race of warriors the size of cities: The Titans.

Character Specs:
Grotusque
Function: military strategist

Decepticon Fengul
Function: optics scorch

Scorponok
Function: super firepower boost
Unite and power up for battle.

Make sure to keep an eye on this listing to see when this exclusive figure is available to order, and keep an eye on Seibertron.com for all the latest Transformers new and reviews!

After what happened with Arcee hopefully he'll be up for pre-order within 30 days of release to prevent another mass cancellation incident.
