Top 5 Most badass looking Transformer toys
This was probably the most fun I had making a list since I simply spent a bunch of time perusing galleries looking for pictures to prove how badass some Transformers toys can look. This list will inevitably be light on writing since in this case a picture is worth more than my words. I am lucky to be writing these lists for a site which is known for its galleries and I encourage you all to write your lists on which Transformers Toys look badass with some pictures in the discussion. So without further ado, here are what I find to be the most badass looking Transfromers toys.
5. Transformers G1 1986 Predaking (Reissue) and Transformers Super God Masterforce Powermaster Optimus Prime w/ Apex Armor (God Ginrai)
You would think G1 toys wouldn't look very badass since most can't move well but that would mean ignoring some of the most badass designs ever. Predaking and Powermaser Optimus are brimming with guns and sharp metal (and teeth for Predaking). They both look like emissaries for death either swooping down or revving up towards you. I couldn't choose which looked more badass because they are indeed both bricks with a combining gimmick, and an equally badass alt mode (don't mess with Tantrum!), and both have weapons EVERYWHERE!!!!!!!
4. Transformers Generations Roadbuster
For some reason, having a visor instead of optics, which helps hide emotion, just brings the badass level to 11 (think Robocop) and a lot of the picks on this list have that (total coincidence I realized as I wrote this down) like Roadbuster here. While the whole design is badass, what I love are the accessories he comes with. You could turn his alt mode into a Mad Max like vehicle with all the added artillery and it's just so fun all the weapon combinations you could come up with in any mode. I especially love having the missile pod on one of his shoulders (Thew has a great rundown of all the possibilities).
3. Transformers Masterpiece Grimlock (Grimlock (MP-08))
Behold!
Having the massive T-Rex hips become the shoulders gives you such a beast of a bot.
Hail to the King baby!
2. Transformers Universe - Classics 2.0 Onslaught
That deal with the visor I was talking about earlier comes to full effect on this Onslaught toy. Those shoulders are insane with the alt mode's ramming spikes climbing to the heavens with his back cannons completing the look. This toy doesn't combine to form Bruticus and he clearly doesn't need to, I am already shi#&ing my pants.
1. Transformers Universe Nemesis Prime
Ok, before we get to this, how many of you know of Peter Freuchen, the most badass man to ever live? Here is the most awesome and brief history lesson you will ever have (brought to you by me and kottke.org):
Standing six feet seven inches, with a magnificent beard, Freuchen was an arctic explorer (among many other things). He participated in several arctic journeys (including a 1000-mile dogsled trip across Greenland), had a peg leg (he lost his leg to frostbite in 1926; he amputated his gangrenous toes himself), was involved in the Danish resistance against Germany and was imprisoned and sentenced to death by the Nazis before escaping to Sweden. My favourite part of his life is when he was trapped in an ice cave where he would certainly die, so he fashioned an icepick out of his frozen poop to escape. Oh and if the peg leg and beard didn't give it away, in his older years he became a whaler ship captain. While the harpoon launcher was invented, he preferred whale hunting the old fashion way which means driving up to the whale and manually stabbing the harpoon into it.
This is how he looked like.
I don't know about you, but that pic totally makes me think of this toy:
Oh man! That toy always looked like Optimus woke up between those millions of years stuck on earth and explored out during the ice age by himself, where he skinned Mammoths to keep warm (and eventually went back to the volcano to keep sleeping and never spoke of this to anyone). He totally gives me a Norse viking/seasoned arctic explorer vibe ala Peter Freuchen. Just look at this picture from Hisashi Yuki, the Takara designer who made this toy:
And the best part is that Hasbro (freaken Hasbro for once!) made the most badass redeco of this already insanely badass looking toy. They gave him a Nemesis Prime deco with ... blood soaked tusks !
Honourable Mentions: Please let us know which toys you find most badass as I am sure there are more than the ones I mentioned. Here's another, for instance:
Transformers Cybertron Optimus Prime (Galaxy Convoy)
Also I wasn't going to include him since he is just so much on the nose but come on, I have to mention Transformers Masterpiece G2 Sideswipe (G-2 Lambor):

If I may, I'd like to suggest my own list:
5: PCC Sledge.
Despite being a bit of a pipsqueak, I do love this guy- between the scowl, the neat black and yellow colourscheme and the fact he has a rock saw on his chest, he's pretty awesome looking. Plus, his vehicle mode is pretty cool, his targetmaster of sorts is a drill, and he makes a nifty combiner torso.
4: Armada Megatron.
He loses points for being a bit of a brick and for that weird coral-orange colour, but I do love him so. His tank mode is like a big armour-plated beetle, and that robot mode is just to die for. The proportions, the massive shoulder-pylons, the headsculpt...just brilliant.
3: Beast Wars Scavenger.
Sure, his "vehicle" mode kinda looks daft and he's a kibble monster in robot mode, but...I dunno, he has this certain feel about him. His robot mode is monstrous and imposing, with the kibble legs actually making his silhouette even more menacing, and his robotic fire-ant mode is just terrifying!
2: ROTF Bludgeon.
He's a skeleton samurai tank. Enough said. He gets even better with the Headrobots upgrade kit.
1: Car Robots Gigatron/RID2001 Megatron.
Words fail me to describe what a thing of beauty Gigatron is. Between that sexy, sexy purple and black colourscheme, the red bits glowing under the light like some sort of demonic furnace, the airbrushed chrome chestplate, and that GLORIOUS headsculpt, he is, in my opinion, the best looking Transformer ever. And that's not even touching on his alternate modes, almost all of which look fantastic.

Some version of movie Ironhide should be in here whether it's the large Leader Class figure or the weapon heavy recon voyager. He's just one of the most badass looking Transformers, particularly for an Autobot.
Just about any version of the RotF Optimus Prime mold, extra points for Striker version.
And as mentioned RotF Bludgeon (with or without the Headrobots upgrade, mine has it) He's an undead samurai and a tank and looks great in both modes.
I agree about the movie Brawn figure too. I regret selling mine a few years back and I'm gonna get another or his redeco (Fallback was it?)

Onslaught might be my favorite Classics/Genererations-style figure EVER. He holds up remarkably well to time, and is, in a word, BAD-ASS.
But, the US iteration of the mold might be the worst. You must consider the Henkei-era Japanese 'USA Edition' version:
Also, don't forget about Botcon 2010 box set exclusive Clench, who has an amazingly badass headsculpt to match that bruiser of a body:

I was of the same opinion as you before having him in hand, but did a total 180 after the fact. So, different strokes my friend ^Carnivius_Prime wrote:I count Roadbuster as one of the most blandest awful Generations figures ever made (bought mine cheap then sold it soon after after I realised it was pretty much clown-footed junk).

I also agree that he is one of the most beautiful toys I have in my collection. But more glorious and regal than badass, kinda like Cybertron/Galaxy Force Scourge/Flame Convoy.
I am not as big a fan as you are on his alt modes though. That one headed dragon, ship, racecar, and mammoth mode are all kinda iffy for me. I do like the Bat and Griffon mode for some reason and I LOVE the hand mode (which I seem to be minority for some reason, come on guys that mode is awesome!).

Get movie Brawn instead, the Fallback redeco doesnt work as well. It tried to be classics but just doesnt fit and the deco scheme kinda blows. I really like that headsculpt (reminds me of the Killzone games) but his goat legs kill the look for me a bit.

Yup. Scourge of the Car Robot series.

Yeah, Scourge had both the looks and the personality to fit this list, though Black Convoy seemed to have even more of an edge to him with his even more dark and serious personality than Scourge.fenrir72 wrote:william-james88 wrote:fenrir72 wrote:Black Convoy

Yup. Scourge of the Car Robot series.
Though, it's too bad that both Scourge and Black Convoy lost a large chunk of their coolness after what Galvatron/Devil Gigatron did to each of them by the end of both versions of the show.

Oh I dunno, I like the Fallback colour scheme (and I like the legs on the mold a lot too). Anyways I've found movie Brawn on eBay with a Buy It Now of £6.99 complete with instructions and guns (£3.20 postage) so snapped that up quickly. I may still get Fallback too as a 'brother' to Brawn (I don't mind having same mold when it can make sense like both being in the same faction and same squad). I recall modifying my original purchase of movie Brawn but can't quite remember what I did with it. Something to do with the windows perhaps. I'm sure I'll remember when I get this one and the same issue will bug me enough.
I still wish Hasbro did some weapon packs with 5mm posts and c-clippythings and all that. There are just never enough weapons to go around. Is there a website that sells TF compatible weapons? I had one for GI Joes (that I bought a couple of guns clearly based on the Auto-9 from RoboCop to go with Joe-ish sized vintage RoboCop figures).

But if I wrote the list, the classics seeker mold would be #1. Its transformation was revolutionary upon its introduction and has stood the test of time for a decade. No other classics mold has been re-issued as many times. The Classics Prime mold would be my # 2 for all the same reasons. When people still jump to buy a reissued mold that's 10 years old, you know its badass.

When WJ said the B-word (Burn, if you see this, I'm not trying to avoid the swear filter, its just that I don't swear), he mean more along the lines of looking completely awesome, like that picture of The Fallen. The exact meaning of the word is tough, uncompromising, intimidating (like the aforementioned picture of The Fallen). While I do agree with your sentiment about those molds (they are pretty awesome), they don't seem to fit the meaning of that word.

Badass =/= G1 Accurate. That's not to say they're mutually exclusive (I do happen to like the look of the Classics Prime mold a lot in fact, though I think the Seeker mold is thoroughly outdated and in need of a proper replacement- if they weren't so expensive I'd buy the iGear Raptor Squadron) but what is G1 accurate may not be badass, and vice versa. Heck, a toy that looks good isn't necessarily badass. Case in point, Generations Arcee- a fantastic toy, but not exactly badass with her sweet smile and dainty proportions (though she was of course plenty capable in the cartoon- I think, haven't actaully watched Season 3 yet- and is a veritable killing machine in IDW!).
I will agree with you that "badass" is a very subjective term, but hey, that's what's fun about these lists- seeing other people's opinions and discussing them.
And just because I feel like it I'm going to list a few more I feel deserve mentioning.
5: Movie Stockade. I love this guy, from his beefy proportions to his slick vehicle mode to his badass headsculpt. Even his gimmick is loads of fun! My only gripe with him as a toy is his lack of ankle rockers and his lack of any kind of ranged weapons or the means to hold them. The articulated fingers are neat as hell though.
4: DotM Shockwave. He certainly isn't your daddy's Shockwave, that's for certain! I just LOVE this redesign of ol' one-eye, from the cannon that's just big enough to look menacing but not so big it causes problems like poor old Energon Shockblast (RIP, buddy) to the glorious frontal rack o' ribs to the headsculpt with its blazing red eyeball and the creepy Tarantulas-maw, and that GLORIOUS purple hue. It's possibly one of the only Shockwave toys (aside from the also pretty awesome Animated toy) that did something completely new with the design concept rather than just retreading G1, and yet it's still recognizably Shockwave. Plus, the often attempted but rarely well executed "Cybertronian Tank" mode actually works well! Well, I like it anyway, but at least it isn't just plainly obviously a robot doing yoga (I'm looking at you, Prime Shockwave). I really wish this guy got some actual development in the movie- IMO they should have ditched Sentinel Prime entirely and had this guy voiced by Leonard Nimoy, perhaps working as a morally ambiguous scientist who ultimately turns on Megatron when he feels he's gone too far.
But I digress. I love this toy, wrinkles and all.
3: Animated Oil Slick. He's metal as all hell. His head is in a jar. His colourscheme rocks hard. He has a flail. He turns into a motorcycle with a goddamn ram skull on it. Do I need to say much more? I think it speaks volumes about how goddamn cool looking this toy is that it makes the divisive Animated aesthetic look good alongside either Animated or CHUG toys. He's just so damned cool and I want him.
2: Beast Wars Rampage. I had to put him in somewhere, I'm sorry. I just love this design so much. For one thing, he's an enormous robotic cannibalistic king crab, and that's just badass. For another, his colourscheme is just awesome and really makes the sculpted detail pop, especially with the orange drybrushing and the chromed shell. Thirdly (fittingly enough), his "vehicle mode" is one of the only good-loooking vehicle modes out of all the Transmetal figures, AND it has working treads! The only reason he's not number 1 is his slightly cumbersome robot mode and its enormous amount of kibble. Regardless, I want one, and one day I shall have one. It helps that his character in the show was absolutely fantastic, and easily one of the most gloriously terrifying villains in Transformers history.
Sweet Primus, don't let Rampage and Airachnid meet or we're all doomed.
1: Transmetal 2 Blackarachnia.
Yes, Transmetal 2 Blackarachnia.
Hear me out, please. Sure, she's a kibble monster in robot mode like Rampage, but somehow it WORKS better than Rampage- whilst it makes posing her a nightmare (or so I'm told, I don't actually own the figure, sadly) it makes her look like Kerrigan from Starcraft, the Alien Queen and the Qubeley from Zeta Gundam had a 3-way lesbian lovechild (with colourscheme mostly courtesy of the Psycho Gundam). The massive shoulderpads, the gribbly spider-legs forming creepy claw-arms, the curving hand-talons that look like they could cut you open from stem to stern, the creepy alien knee-high boots and "bra" that adds slightly alien-BDSM look, the generally Gigeresque sculpting and detailing, and that lovely airbrushed pink on the yellow and chrome parts! Between the fact she's pretty big, and the fact she's dressed like some kind of demonic brood mother/alien hive queen, she looks imposing, powerful and just plain vicious, with an air of sensuality- which is not something that can be said about a lot of Transformers toys.
Of course, the alt mode is where it really goes to 11- like female Oni (Japanese ogres known for fluctuating tempers) she goes from monstrous but strangely attractive to OH MY GOD IT'S F***ING TERRIFYING once you transform her into spider mode. Whereas the robot mode has a regal, almost majestic look to it, the spider mode is 100% pure predator. Like, she's going to hunt you down and devour you and there's nothing you can do about it. Between the increase in that lovely silvery-pink airbrushed chrome, the wonderful asymmetrical sculpting on every single component (each individual LEG is unique!) and the gorgeously petrifying face, she really does look like a nightmare given plastic form (or at the very least, a really cool boss monster from a 1990s SNES game).
Literally the only complaint I have with her aesthetically (I'm not sure about functionally because I don't own her) is the weird hand-pincer weapon in robot mode made from her spider jaws. It looks a bit...I dunno, phoned in? Still, it's nowhere near enough to detract from the overall badassery that is Supreme Empress of Destruction Kurokumokogo TM2 Blackarachnia.

Yeah, it was hard to find pictures that expressed how much of a badass he looks like in hand. But owning him, I found it really hard to put him any lower on the list, he is such a beast.
Delta Magnus, your list is awesome. And you totally get it; these top lists are for the fun of generating discussion within the community and us all arriving at what the most awesome toys out there are. This is for present and future fans to stumble upon and get acquainted with all the awesomeness out there, and I love when people add to the discussion since all I am doing is getting the ball rolling. I loved your post so much, I added pics and links if anyone was curious and didnt know the toys you were referring to:

I really wish this guy got some actual development in the movie- IMO they should have ditched Sentinel Prime entirely and had this guy voiced by Leonard Nimoy, perhaps working as a morally ambiguous scientist who ultimately turns on Megatron when he feels he's gone too far.But I digress.
