WELP BACK TO COMPLETION MODE I GUESS

Optimal Optimus, maybe, but not Optimus Primal. I foresee a lot of people being ticked off that he turns into a random long cybertronian transport ship rather than a gorilla. I also foresee a lot of people making fun of the fact that its because John Warden designed him and he is allergic to beast wars.

Terrorcons are a buy, of course, but I have to wait until TT says whether the UW series is coming back.
I was wondering how Moonracer was going to be put into plastic, because her G1 animation alt mode is the absolute worst, but I have to say, I like this!

Man though! That Gorilla mode looks cool and the combined Optimal mode is outstanding. Love that they kept those big clunky robo hands.
He looks good and interesting, and I'm ok with his funkyness, 'cause I already/still have the other Primal toys.
Hun-Garrrrrrrr and Rippersnapper look DOPE TOO!
Gonna be another exciting year ahead.

I'd certainly count on it. Legends-Class Beachcomber and Slash have already shown that the TM/PM pilot feature is still in the line -- we just haven't seen it in anything other than Legends yet. I'd bet on it not being in Voyagers and Deluxes due to them needing to do the Combining gimmick; but it seems like there'd be nothing preventing the Leaders from having it.

Not some random long Cybertronian transport, but the cockpit for the Optimal Optimus vehicle forms. I guess that fits with the trailer thing the others have...

Looking at it now for the third time. It looks like there is already some junk in there. Looks like it could be something Matrix shaped though, so maybe it pops out ant a TM/PM can drive.Kurona wrote:Cobotron wrote:Y'all think the cockpit in the space log is TM/PM pilotable?

Funny story, after I moved and was setting up my collection, I flipped out because one of my vintage Diaclone pilots was missing. Months later by the time I got to unpacking all my Beast Wars guys, I found him in Optimal's cockpit!
Also just thinking the surf ship is a neat nod to the whole "evolution" idea because it encompasses all 3 of Primal main iterations. Transmetal Primal was the surfer dude.

Yes, when you look at the renders, it was the only logical choice according the constraints of the line.
Same as Orion which has an Optimus truck alt mode.
It doesn't bother me a lot, we already had a good recent Monkey-Primal with the BW anniversary/cybertron one, this new one is the perfect opportunity to finally get a cybertronian Primal other than the unaffordable 2006 botcon one.
So, if the renders are accurate, it means he can be :
- small Primal, transforming to shuttle.
- Monkey riding the shuttle as surf (like TM Primal)
- Monkey with Armored backpack
- Independant Monkey which can be played with even without the small Primal (contrary to Optimus and Rodimus trailers which are only trailer)
- Optimal Optimus
- Optimal Optimus with his flying mode.
Seriously, this is so ridiculously awesome. I was hyped by Optimus and Hotrod, but Optimal Optimus just made them obsolete.
Tell me we can put a TM in his cockpit and my nose will bleed.
I remember how I was so disapointed by what they showed to the SDCC. (retools of CW etc). Things have changed.

They at the very least share engineering. The hand hinge is the same, the location of the combiner ports is the same, the way the feet work is the same, and the tail on Hun-Gurrs chest is where silverbolts jet cockpit would be, except this time it's on the chest instead of the back.

The only ape mode is the big Optimal Optimus gorilla mode. The smaller deluxe Optimus Primal does not turn into a gorilla.
Cobotron wrote:Y'all think the cockpit in the space log is TM/PM pilotable?

I definitely think so Especially since that will mean that they will finally work in what the original was meant to have (a small rider inside the cockpit).
I do find it cool how the smaller primal connects to form Optimal Optimus.
ebo716 wrote:I think Hun-Gurrr might be a retool of silverbolt, mainly due to the way the arms and legs work.
I dont think retool works as a term anymore with all these new approaches but yeah they definitely have similar engineering. I would expect the torso to thus be similar, which is great since thats the best torso so far.

He does do the Evolution gimmick, though it's not immediately noticeable. The smaller ship mode combines with the gorilla "trailer" to complete the classic Optimal Optimus modes, robot and vehicle(s).

Along with completing the Transmetal 2 surfing gorilla mode.

The Terrorcons could have stood to stray a bit further from their G1 roots in beast mode, maybe have some detailing derived from their "Beast Hunters" counterparts. Hun-Gurrr is passable, but Rippersnapper's alt mode was pretty weak even by the standards of G1 "monster" modes and using it as-is probably wasn't the best idea.
I'm conflicted on Optimus Primal. I want to like it, and it doesn't look bad per se, it actually looks kinda cool, but I HATE that the gorilla part is the "trailer" and the individual robot basically transforms into something that doesn't really look like anything.

I'm one of those people. And let's be honest, that really is as good a theory as any about what went wrong.

I dunno how to feel about Moonracer though, on the other hand. That car mode looks AWESOME (echoes of the beauty that was Prime Vehicon, anyone?) and it looks like it'll actually undergo some transformation to become a limb, which I always like on my combinerbots, but... I dunno, I'm just not feeling the robot mode I guess? She kinda has a bunch of backpack-junk and panels sticking off the sides of her limbs, and she ends up echoing AoE Deluxe Drift in a bad way to me. I bet she'll look better painted, and I'd be willing to bet the backpack can be at least slightly rearranged, and everyone say it with me: I'll probably buy her anyway. She's just... not quite doing it for me juuuust yet.

I'm not one to easily be freaked out, but Strafe's beast mode needs to be burned at the stake with a preist supervising!

Who's with me!
Now that aside, I'm not sure how I feel about the other new reveals. Hun-gurrr was my favorite torso of the original combiners, but this version is looking like maybe the worst yet. His bot mode has weird legs, tiny narrow feet, and his tail is now on his chest which may not be a mistake, his combined chest looks to be on his back. Then his dragon mode just looks terrible! Tiny front legs like kickstands on a bike, back legs that bend the wrong way (again, not mistransformed, the feet are on hinges, there's no way to spin the leg around), and his belly drags now.
Also looks like he's another one that does a headstand like Silverbolt, he appears to have combiner ports hidden in his wrists (to form knees) and knees (to make shoulders) just like Silverbolt. Kinda makes me sad since now he wont have dragon knees.
Not sure how I feel about Optimus Primal. I'm not a big fan of him being a space bus/surf board now instead of a gorilla. It really isn't much of an evolution. Hot Rod and Rodimus are both full represented in all four main modes, Optimus evolves from Orion Pax and has an acceptable truck mode with trailer. But Primal getting an alt mode he's never had before while Hot Rod does and Orion may as well have just doesn't sit well with me. I'm a little happy and a little annoyed that the gorilla mode of Optimal Optimus doesn't require Primal, just because it's nice that Primal gets to have a big gorilla partner, but annoying that the other guys' trailers don't seem to turn into anything on their own.
Also, knowing that Primal doesn't turn into a gorilla really makes me want to see his bot mode replaced with Beast Machines Megatron.
Moonracer looks fine to me aside from the strange feet and something of a backpack.
Need to see all of these painted before I pass final judgement.

Rippersnapper looks great with his Wolverine claws. I just hope you can open his creature mouth.

DMSL wrote:The thick dragon necks and the thick robot mode arms throw me off. Hopefully they will rework those. That bulk needs to be on the legs instead of the arms. The legs of the robot mode look too thin.
I thought his arm size was the part they got most right about the figure.
Windsweeper wrote:Rippersnapper looks great with his Wolverine claws. I just hope you can open his creature mouth.
Looks like he has a pin hole for a hinge above his bottom jaw and you can see from the bot mode that his jaws are separate pieces.

Kurona wrote:Did anyone at the panel explain why Hun-Gurrr's face is hidden? They surely can't have shown that without some sort of reference to it.
From the panel video we got just above, apparently all we've been told is that the sneak peek is "so exclusive we can't even show you his face" Who knows what that's supposed to mean. Long shot here, but: maybe it's a secondary-use face, and they've covered it up so as not to spoil potential other uses they're considering for the mold? That's my best (read:only) guess, anyways.
Kurona wrote:Also, he's totally a Silverbolt retool you guys
For once, it seems like declaring him to be based on a previous figure is the rational thing to do here. He sure does look like a Silverbolt body-type (heavily altered nonetheless, maybe more along the lines of shared engineering a la Dead End / Chromedome). I wonder if that means we'll be able to finagle a semi-jet-mode out of him somehow, just for fun?
Posted by Evil Eye on September 10th, 2017 @ 6:51am CDT
Rippersnapper looks amazing! I just hope he gets more than a headswap for the inevitable Overbite redeco. I'll totally agree though, an Energon Cruellock retool would be an awesome thing.
Moonracer actually looks brilliant! I'll definitely be getting her.
Optimus Primal looks great in robot mode and "super mode" but seriously why the hell is he a log with a cockpit and not a gorilla? Are you f***ing kidding me Warden? Are you so petty and spiteful over Primal winning instead of one of your GEEWUN characters that you deliberately did a crap job? Screw you Warden. I ain't buying it. Come back when you do your job properly.

1. He does, in fact, work like the other Leaders in that the 'deluxe' forms the top part of the Leader's robot mode. His being the surfboard for the Gorilla mode tricked us into thinking otherwise; but you can clearly see the cockpit of Primal's alt mode forming Optimal's chest; and the in-progress models show the rest of Primal's alt mode as a backpack. Proving this is that you can see the Matrix of Leadership in Optimal's chest and Primal's cockpit.
2. Talking of which: MATRIX OF FRIGGIN' LEADERSHIP! This also seems to confirm that Prime/Titan Masters can go in the cockpit; since the Matrix would itself be a Prime Master.
