There are quite a few anime releases coming out on hi-def formats Akira, GitS 2: Innocence, Freedom, Wings of Honneamise, Dragon Ball Z and GitS:SAC Solid State Society to name a few. But I agree though that most American/ American funded Korean animation should be left far away from hi-def formats, there just not good enough video quality wise to justify the extra detail.

I'm not sure because this is a European release, but it would make sense in the US, since I believe Sony owns the rights to the animated movie now. Can't see Sony pushing things out on HDDVD

Nope only 3 regions with Blu-Ray, A, B and C
A= North America, Central America, South America, Japan, North Korea, South Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Southeast Asia.
B=Europe, Greenland, French territories, Middle East, Africa, Australia and New Zealand
C=India, Nepal, Mainland China, Pakistan, Russia, Central and South Asia.

Well, there's no point for TV cartoons(except recent HD ones), but anything that was shown theatrically, it should make a difference.
A lot of dvd releases of golden age cartoons have been severely compromised by compression artifacts and poorly applied DVNR restoration.
