Takara has posted a new 2 page comic on their website to promote their first wave of Velocitron toys: Road Rocket, Burn Out, Road Hauler and Blurr. The comic is from Sakamoto and while it is only 2 pages, there are lots of fun Easter Eggs. We see that in whatever universe this comic is taking place in, Burn Out is indeed a Diaclone toy, with Dia driving. Some fans might wonder if the extra characters we see cheering them on may hint at anything and we can tell you in full confidence that THEY DO NOT. Those extra characters are just there to give each of the releases one particular character linked directly to them to cheer them on. So a fellow Diaclone toy, a fellow IDW barman, a fellow Ninja and the most powerful Constructicon.

Last night at Wal-Mart I noticed that Scourge's price tag actually calls him Black Convoy. Was he referred to that name in the listings? I just think it's odd he has 1 name on the box and another in the store.

His case box says BLK Convoy, too.

Hey you need a Blitzwing? Store up the street from my job has one...Walmart.

Black Convoy is his name in all initial retailer listings and its the name on the case/shipping box.

Hasbro used it due to another figure also possibly being on the shelf also called scourge

That is just fan speculation and from what we were told by Hasbro developers who worked on this toy, it's more than likely flat out false.

I thought they said they went with black convoy since that was the Japanese name and car robots came out first or something like that

In Japan "Black Convoy" is a more generic name or descriptor for both RiD 2001 Scourge and a lot of Nemesis Primes, guess they found out the latter part a bit too late

Well they also gave us a half baked reason for the deco which looks more like they based him off the wrong image off Google. It’s happened before

I get it though, the whole issue comes from the fact that Laser Prime has a translucent chest. Crazy how all deco choices stem from that. Because then, the chest must be the same colour as the windshield. So then be it scourge or any type of black Convoy, we get pink/red chest windows. And the rest ensues.

I dont buy that, it would be just as easy to apply the tampos needed to the chest with or without translucent parts. Also the RTS repaint also had the the translucent windshield and was still closer to Scourge's deco than this new one

I'm just writing the explanation Hasbro gave in their decision process for the deco

That was their excuse for using RID 2000 instead of 2001.

Sam said they weren't actually sure what figure they were designing at the time (even the name Nemesis Prime was possible), the only mandate from higher up was that it had to have a silver tanker. He admitted that the chest colors were a mistake on his part, it seems he didn't really understand the nuances between the designs.

On the topic of the comic, I'm going to guess the remaining cheerers for part 2 of the comic. Hot Shot or Clocker for Override, Deep Cover for Clampdown, and Skybite or Dark Ai for Scourge.

I thought he was cheering on IDW Blurr or is this supposed to be IDW Version 2.0 Blur?

As for what the line is about, well, let's imagine shall we...

Hasbro exec: Walmart need another exclusive tf line, and your going to give it to them!

Designer: okay...what's it about? I mean we doing original toys or what?

Hasbro exec: whatever we have in the budget and not a cent more!

Designer: so redecos then...

Hasbro Exec: no idea what you're talking about.

Designer: but it needs a theme! Why are we pulling these characters together?

Designer B: ohh Animated collection! We can redeco the Ark as Omega Supreme!

Hasbro Exec: you're fired...look, people like nascar and stuff, so do a race, but put more thought into it! Now I'm going for my elevenses at starbucks, I want you working on this non-stop!

Designer C: so...a inter-dimensional race?

Designer A: yeah, I'm thinking a race...

I dunno, I'm just going with it's an alternate universe IDW Blurr since the main IDW Blurr was killed by Unicron.

Honestly, I don't think anyone (from the designers to Sakamoto) even thought about that.

I know that, I just wish she was part of the actual figure. Even if she didn't actually transform and just rode the vehicle mode. A stronger nod to the mecha nature of the Diaclone line.

Based on what? These figures dont have any bios on the boxes and the Skids mold dosnt even look remotely female. Without something on the packaging, some established fiction to go off of (no, a designer interview dosnt count), or a clear visual indicator of what gender a figure is, I think we are free to decide for ourselves whether the figures on our shelves are male or female.

BotCon 2015 Burn Out is a mech yes, but its pilot Dia (who came with BotCon 2015 Sergeant Hound) is female. The rest is extrapolated from that.

Botcon fiction & bio (which is how Burnout even became a TF character in the first place), the designers referred to her as "her" for the entirety of the Velocitron reveal stream, and her appearances in comics since then have either preserved the use of female pronouns or just never addressed her by anything other than name.

Didnt know about Botcon 2015's bio, so my bad there. I do think HasTak needs to be held to a higher standard when it comes to female Transformers figures though. We know they can make fantastic female figures now so repainting a male figure and calling it female dosnt work as well for me anymore. Just seems even more lazy than the usual repaint.

Luckily for you, Burn Out's Masterpiece looks to be getting more feminine features that are also closer to the original Diaclone toy. The MP is even being named "Dia Burnout" in reference to Dia, her Diaclone pilot from the BotCon toy.

Dia is also seen in the two-page Japanese manga for the Velocitron line that was newsed earlier, in which she appears as Burn Out's holographic avatar driver (and as a repurpose of the Nightstick that comes with Selects Artfire).

Just curious why the people making the figure wouldn't count? The creators should always be considered the highest authority on the character they've made. These same designers are the ones that decided that Road Rocket is female now and that seems to have stuck with the comic showing fellow female ninja Nightbird cheering for her instead of a fellow Autobot ninja like Greatshot or Sixknight.

The comic also calls her out as Dia Burnout like the MP.

How many people are going to watch those interviews vs how many will be picking up the toys? Most will interpret things visually, by what's directly in front of them at the time, so even previous fictions might not mean much if the person holding the figure isn't aware of it. If a figure looks male, people will see it as male.

On the flip side of it, there are cases like Road Rocket, or Override/Nitro Convoy, who have fiction portray them as genders opposite of what the current designers say they are. Road Rocket being male in some Comics, like TFCC Magazine and Override/Nitro Convoy's gender depending on if you prefer the Japanese or American version of the character. Both of the new figures having a masculine appearance will also have an impact on how they are viewed.

Designers can say what they want, but how their works are interpreted is up to those who behold it.

It's Nightbird who's cheering for Road Rocket because the Legends manga already established Nightbird as the mentor of both Road Rocket and Road Pig.

And Sixknight is still dead, so he wouldn't be around anyway.

That's why we have canon, and fanon ;)

Yours can be a dude, man. Doesn't change canon, but you're free to have your plastic robots be whatever gender you want.

And Transformers has so many Canons that it could kick sand in both DC and Marvel's faces.

It is better though if what designers or writers say in interviews that isn't put into official fiction not be considered canon, otherwise every comment Ken Penders ever made about how characters in Archie Sonic were and interacted that wasnt in those comics would be considered canon, and I really dont want that to be the case.

Not really. In your head canon is what you make it. In my head, canon is a mismash of different sources I've meticulously worked out so as not to conflict, with some stuff I just straight made up, but you do you.

Still no Cosmos at several roundtrip stop, meanwhile plenty of the others just laying about...
Looks like stores got 2-3 cases each based on the counts of each one if there indeed were 2X on Blur etc.

Whoa sorry for my ignorance on not knowing Burn Out's Cybertronian genderfication and the small All Spark it may have caused! :-P

But I still stand by on my 2 cents with no sense. :VEHI:

It's the ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ line.

Lawl. But we already have one of those with Buzzworthy Bumblebee, and even Legacy. Basically every Transformers line (save for maybe Studio Series) currently going seems kinda “lol idk.” It’s weird to me as someone who only started collecting again during the War for Cybertron Trilogy.

OK, there's canon, fanon, and Authorial Intent.

I sense you are called by the matrix. From here on, you will be dubbed "Nitronimus Prime."
