Thanks to Matt in japan we have a video review of Takara's latest MP, Masterpiece MP-53 Skids. He is out in Japan so our resident Seibertronian there has gone through the figure. Let us know if you are getting yours, and if this review either gets you more excited or makes you want to purchase it (or not).

Cheers, Matt, for the review! I was waiting for a REAL, honest reviewer that bought the figure legitimately, to watch on YouTube, so your the first I've heard about.

My red and blue boys are probably a "non-delivery notice" in my letter-box as we speak (as Amazon Japan ALWAYS delivers whenever I'm at work, no matter what times I specify, when asked).

Looking forward to watching the review and opening the toys soon!

Just got Reboost and Skids (and pre-ordered Crosscut). I'm just so happy with the alt-mode, that I haven't transformed them yet.

I checked the TFWiki bio for Reboost ( https://tfwiki.net/wiki/Reboost ) and they kept mentioning how "popular" the (turbo) was, but a Top Gear review (see below) stated that the (turbo) didn't catch on and was discontinued soon(ish) after release. It DID seem to impress the head of Honda, though (see the video below). I can only assume either the regular "R" version (which Reboost is based on) was more popular than the "turbo" version and/or the main reason the car got a "more important" bio in Reboost's instructions was due to the (rumour?) that Honda partly funded/promoted/was behind this release, in order to celebrate its (30th?) anniversary, or something.

Here's the Top Gear review (featuring a "Japan Only" advert featuring British ska band, "Madness") :

I'm supposed to get Reboost today.
So I'll make a full pictorial review tonight if everything goes well on schedule.

MP-54 Reboost will hijack his brother Skids thread to show himself off!
So let's get right into it.

First of, the box is small and pretty similar to what we got so far from Takara over the years.

Image

Image

This is what you get when you open the box. Reboost have more accessories than Skids notably that adorable mini scooter. There's also the instructions and the obligatory character card.

Image

Image

The little guy is an "hologram" of Sam Witwicky (I guess) and can ride the scooter easily. But the guy is way too small compared to the car.

Image

They didn't had to do that but they did anyway. The hood can lift up to reveal an engine!

Image

The trunk door can open and there is LOTS of storage inside.

Image

After a very small transformation, the scooter can store inside.

Image

All 3 weapons can store inside as well.

Image

Image

Image

But once all 3 guns are in the truck, there is no more room for the scooter unless you don't mind leaving the rear door open.

Image

The vehicle is superbly well detailed.

Image

Image

Image

There's no interior details at all inside. The bot takes all the space.

Image

But the clear guy is stubborn. And yes, this is official.

Image

The holo-guy can only be a child at this size.

Image

But he's annoying as hell to deal with, things popping off everywhere all the time.

Image

So in the end, despite the fact that having an extra gun, an extra dude, and a scooter over Skids is super nice, those extras shall remain box-warmers.

Image

Now, it's time for comparison pictures with other Transformers.

First, G1 Skids.

Image

Image

Next, MP-10 Optimus Prime, and MP-21 Bumblebee (the only one that matters.)

Image

Finally, some comparison with current WFC deluxes.

Image

Transforming Reboost was pretty straightforward and smooth like MP-21 or MP-10. No annoying steps, no tolerance issues, and it use clever tricks all over. Only thing that may cause a problem are the arms when I'll put him back into vehicle mode. Those arms pretzel themselves à la Alternators.
Reboost have decent articulations and joints. Also, his hands do have a trigger finger and can open and close.

Image

He's pretty stable and can even take a running pose without issues.

Image

Reboost is very fun to handle.

Image

That head looks like the original Diaclone. But for me, all I can see is Optimus Prime, finally going in retirement.
It's also the only place that a :BOT: is revealed.

Image

Too often, guns are annoying to deal with Masterpieces toys. They usually have a hard time to peg in hands. Not here. Reboost take his guns firmly in hand/arm and will not drop them unless you want to take them off.

Image

Reboost have a very clean back. Plus the back of the legs are the only place where faux-parts are used with those back-of-the-van cheat-panels. A very clever trick.

Image

Image

Comparison with MP-21 Bumblebee and MP-10 Optimus Prime in robot mode. Reboost is meant to go with the older Masterpiece instead of the newer one that are obsessed with Cartoon accuracy. And that's a great thing IMO.

Image

With G1 Skids because he's PRECIOUS.

Image

With the current WFC deluxes:

Image

Finally, with MP-10 and the newer MP Optimus mold in the shape of Nemesis Prime:

Image

Overall, I seriously think that MP-54 Reboost is my Transformers of the year. He's fun to handle, beautiful in all mode, plus he use so many nice transformation tricks.
Not only that, but he's priced just in the mid point between a current Leader and Commander toy. I highly recommend him.

It's been a while since I had a Transformers THIS good!

It's not Sam Witwicky. It's a Holomatter Avatar.

You could name him George Constanza or Antoine Bertrand that it wouldn't make any difference.
I was talking about the mold itself.

Oh... You don't know. The story behind Reboost as a character. It is... something else.

HONDA CITY-R
It’s been many a long and arduous road before Reboost came face to face with the Honda City R. He was originally part of the Autobot Outer Planetary Support Squad, taking the form of a surveillance satellite. After a long service in space, he successfully positioned to join the defense force of the allied planet Engali. He soon thought of his position as part of a noble family’s citadel defense team as his vocation. He accepted orders from the Engalian House of Peers without a second thought. In order to deepen the planet’s alliance, Reboost was even put forward to marry the heir of a certain major family. The 8-gendered Engalians have a complicated and bizarre marriage system, but Reboost found he got on well with his potential spouse, named Merai, and they agreed to the marriage. Sadly, it soon became clear that the noble houses were after Reboost’s special ability, and he soon became embroiled in a dispute between the various princes of the houses. Reboost lost consciousness after an attack, and was moved to a research facility on another planet. When he awoke, Reboost found he’d been disassembled, with his life core being examined under the name “Component X”. Secretly hacking into the facility’s network, Reboost found that the Engalian traitors had formed a conspiracy with a division of the corporation known as Marlboor, and that Merai and his other spouses were safe, but already married into other families. But just as one relationship ended, another began. He had found some of the enemy’s spy data on a car from Planet Earth: a red Honda City R. Realising at once he had no other options for a vehicle mode, Reboost began to plan his escape to Earth. Distracting the enemy using holomatter avatars, he set about rebuilding his core into an autonomous Motocompo-type device, then used the facility’s ground bridge to travel to the Sol system’s warp gate. From there, he hitched a ride on a cargo ship to Earth. As he landed, he found that his destination was under attack from the Decepticons, putting a human city in danger. He rushed to a nearby parking garage, and finally found and merged with his long-awaited Honda City R! Injecting nanovectors and transplanting his life core, he turned the City R into a super robot lifeform, transforming into an Autobot warrior and counter attacking the Decepticons. Reboost, having undergone a splendid rebirth through the City R, became the new defender of the city.

REBOOST
After a long interstellar mission filled with galactic hardship, Reboost has finally been assigned to Autobot City on Earth, gaining a new vehicle mode and a new city to protect. Now he rejoices in all the planet has to offer. He has a cheerful social life and diverse hobbies: giving people rides around town, multispectrum landscape photography and cy-fiber weaving, building new relationships all the while. Starting with Cosmos, he’s come to get along with many Autobots. That said, he’s clashed with Tailgate, who views Earth machinery as living beings.

Reboost carries a number of weapons specialised for urban defense. His mid-size laser gun can rapid fire laser dot rounds can hit an aerial target at 150km, and his Rocketbot shells can create an energy-weapon dampening field of up to 300 metres. At close range, his double laser gun turret can project destructive hard-light blades that don’t harm humans and buildings, hurting only enemies. His recon drone, Component X was constructed with his own life force and personality component, allowing it to perform complex reconnaissance and maneuvering using holomatter avatars, as well as retreat while carrying his life core. His in-born Boost Key ability allows him to reactivate the life functions of organic and mechanical beings alike, also allowing him to temporarily boost the power of both himself and others. While this does boost morale and can bring back those on the brink of death, its restorative powers are limited by Reboost’s lack of medical expertise, introducing an element of randomness to its powers and limiting its overall use.

Oh God...

My guess is that Reboost is just an average Joe, a blue collar worker with a boring 9 to 5 job. He find happiness in his chuunibyou delusions (thus explaining that zany backstory.)

That makes me like him even more!

Anyway, great little review. I love the car nice details and can't wait to transform them, but I'm worried about the Binaltech arms, as I have up getting to get Binaltech Grimlock's arms back into car mode. I ended up just removing them and chucking them into the box.

I'm also surprised that they didn't mention anything about Reboost suffering from https://tfwiki.net/wiki/Primus_apotheosis...

Btw, our lad in Japan, Wotafa, reviewed Skids:

It's in Japanese, but his reviews are usually pretty easy to understand regardless, as he knows his Transformers well.

Btw, if anyone could make some comparison pics to show the official versions alongside the xTransbots versions, that would be great. I'm a little interested in getting this version and want to see the scale:

He looks fantastic! I kinda want Crosscut, if only because I want a version with the Motocompo scooter, but don't fancy another red Autobot (especially as I have the red version of Bumblebee). But yeah, thanks for this review.

You mean the Diaclone humans? Vintage or modern?
We need a Diaclone collector for the answers.

The holograms figure is larger than a standard, modern Diaclone "human". O would say it's around or taller than their standard, entry-level mechsuit.

Greetings Seibertronians!

The newsest editions to the Masterpiece line are finally making it into the hands of collectors worldwide! Maybe though, you're still on the fence about these new figures. Maybe your fingers are hovering over the buy button but can't quite commit. Maybe, just maybe, a review of these two figures from fellow Seibertron user, and YouTube toy reviewer, Chuckdawg1999, will change your mind!

Let's see what he thinks of this pair:

chuckdawg1999 wrote:The Honda City mold is the BEST Masterpiece figure I've handled in a long, long time. I haven't enjoyed transforming a figure this much since Masterpiece Bumblebee 1.0. If I have to pick one to recommend, Skids is part of the G1 cast so it's a necessity for a Masterpiece shelf. Then again both are very affordable so if you can, both are great additions to any collection.

Has his words swayed you to buy one or both of these figures? Do you already have them?

Let us know in the Energon Pub and stay tuned to Seibertron for all the latest news and reviews!

Gosh, it's almost like so many MPs since the original MP Bee making RotF Optimus look like a Happy Meal toy in terms of complexity for the sake of looking extra super-duper toony was a mistake!

Still being amused by the fact that we're likely to see Screech, and an RotF Skids-colors redeco of this Skids.
