We ony got confirmation of the Walmart exclusive G1 Hot Rod reissue yesterday and now we have a video review. While it is in Chinese, we see all we need to see for a toy that has already been reviewed ad nauseum.

It comes in a very nice replica G1 packaging minus rounded corners on the flap. Aside form that, it appears to be a straight reissue of the original TRU Commemorative Hot Rod reissue. It has the wrong sticker on his chest, which comes from the later Targetmaster chest sticker instead of the original plain non-shiny version on the original G1 Hot Rod. Also, it does not have the pins in his "shoulder" joints that attach his upper arms to his torso.

The review was done by Kevin Liu and this was sent to us by Daniel Oon.

How is there a review for this thing already?

Because ASIA ;)^

I don't recall any of my Rods being so shiny. Actually makes me interested in this :-?

It definitely touches on my nostalgia a lil bit but I don't think I'd want to buy it again. I find the old G1 stuff like this too frustratingly limited in posing and lacking character because of it. Still it is an old fave from the era.

Yeah, while it's still a bit blocky like all G1 toys, this transformation is a personal favorite. How the 'collar' moves while you position the chest was always so cool. For newer fans, definitely a highly recommend nostalgic figure to add to your shelf. It's way better than the larger Rodimus Prime G1 toy. That one was a real dud, to me next to this one.

The foil stickers on the sides of the car are new to this release plus it's inconclusive until we get a translation of the video or a review in english to know if the feet are plastic or painted diecast.

The original Takara JP Hotrodimus had a shiny foil type decal for his flame hood. Same with their JP re-issue in 2000+ Not sure if the latest release Hb will still use the same material or the PotP  type.

The targetmaster version had the flame detail type tampo'd.

So it's basically Targetmaster Hot Rod, but without Targetmaster and with modded original guns.
Bizzare.

Still, if the price is right, I'd buy it.

Does this new Walmart Exclusive G1 Hot Rod have die-cast feet or black plastic feet? They look like glossy black plastic in this vid. Weren't the last re-issues die-cast?

I still have my TRU Commemorative Series version, I don't need this... but it is still pretty cool, I might just get one anyway. Wonder when Canadian Walmarts are gonna get these...

I have no idea what you're referencing, I'm intrigued :-?

What I'd like to see is something like Menasor or Defensor reissued, in G2 colors. Give us something we've never had before! Though Takara has the right idea I think, with the new Encore's they're gave us a more show accurate God Fire Convoy (even though the original was pretty close), an amazingly accurate BM Primal, and now possibly Unicron of Light. I'm pretty pleased with how its proceeding :D

Now we’re talking. Starscream is the only G1 Seeker I don’t own, and I’d rather not pay out the ass for one like I did for Thundercracker and Skywarp. Devastator’s one I’ve been considering getting but I can never find one less than $100 which sucks but is expected.

Just to note, Starscream appears to be an amalgam. His null rays are the enlarged ones used for the TRU Commemorative Series Seeker's, but as a bonus he seems to have the G1 Pistol Megatron made for Takara's TFC-9 (Anime) Starscream, so presumably he'd also have the altered fists to accommodate said accessory.

Have to say, as a "Geewunner" who understood the frustration felt by those who grew up with Beast Wars and a lack of interest from Hasbro to cater to them now that they have disposable incomes, even I'm tired of these reissues.

Can we move on already? At the very least there must be other molds from later parts of G1.

Or you know, actually throw some love towards the BW era. Re-release the likes of Primal, Megatron, Cheetor and Dinbot alongside their MP releases.

I wouldn't mind getting the cars, maybe pass on Bee since I have the key chain version. Definitely don't need another Devastator reissue after buying the two Encore versions (which both have mold issues). Starscream I might consider just for the Megatron gun and fists to go with my 2001 reissue. I just hope they've revived the mold, previous uses like the Skywarp/Thundercracker 2-pack suffers from terrible degradation preventing the front half of the jet mode to stay upright in bot mode causing them to "lean back" from the weight of the nosecone.

What Burn said. And if they're going to stick with G1, I would rather have figures from season 3.

The main holder is DC Comics itself, each toy field has a different licensee company.

Pfff, I'd be content with a straight up reissue of Cybertron Megatron or Galvatron. Somehow I ended up with all of Hasbro's releases of the guy(s) in both Armada and Energon, but completely missed the Cybertron mold.

The Robot Kingdom newsletter had more G1 reissues available for preorder including Starscream which is also listed on walmart.com with images. Fellow Seibertronian Shajaki did a breakdown of what is included in this version of the G1 toy:

I have no interest in these myself (way too expensive for what are now extremely primitive simple toys, they're charging a heck of a lot for the nostalgia) but I was browsing new stuffs on Kapow Toys site and saw them there so thought I'd provide UK prices if UK folk are interested (Kapow price first and in brackets is what they say is regular RRP)

Starscream - £39.99 (£44.99)
Devastator - £94.99 (£99.99)
Mini-bots pack of 4 (Swerve, Bumblebee, Tailgate and Outback) - £38.97 (£44.99)

For that price you're getting three Bees, two Swerves, two Tailgates, and one Outback so the price isn't that bad. Walmart will sell them individually and going by the RK price it's about $10 each which doesn't seem super unreasonable, the WM price will probably be lower.

Notice that clearly the multipack was decided based on popularity; 3 of Bumblebee (the only minibot 'A-Lister') 2 of Swerve and Tailgate (co-stars of MTMTE) and only one Outback (the only recent-ish role I remember is as a corpse in Spotlight Kup, a role so small that in Megatron Origin they forgot he'd already died (or rather was already fated to die later) and had to create a new character (Fastback) to die)
What I don't get is why Warpath, Cosmos, Brawn, Seaspray, Windcharger, Powerglide, and Huffer were all ignored by the reissues.

Simply put this is just the Encore 10 (2008) lineup minus Pipes.

Image

The guys you want are mostly from the older Transformers Collection 12 (2004). So it's just a matter of doing the figures that had the most recent update. The exceptions being the last time we saw Windcharger and Brawn was the 2003 key chain versions which would require Hasbro tweaking the molds again. The last time they touched the Seaspray mold was in G2 (1993), who knows if they still have it.

Also Outback just got a new figure in PotP so he's still fresh in people's minds.

I don’t have a preference, I like the look of both of them!

So wait, I think I’m confused as to how this pack works. There’s multiples of Bumblebee in the 8-pack? And they’re also selling them individually?

You're raising good points there. What heads will Devie and Bumblebee sport?

If that's the actual reissue (hard to tell since Hasbro is using the old logo on the reissues) then that's the standard Devy, not the animated version. Mixmaster's green barrel gives it away. It would be weird to have the original toy deco and the cartoon head. The backer cards for the cars appear to be new, I can't find any examples of multilingual cards like that from G1 even in Europe. Best I found was this, which isn't even close:

Image

So I'm not expect Bee to have the cartoon face, but then again Takara Tomy didn't update the art on Encore 10 either.

I think the RK pics are placeholders, so there's probably not much we can discern from them at the moment.

But with Screamer being such a mishmash of other releases, I wouldn't assume anything about the minibots or Devs. :-?

Probably the same, I doubt Hasbro will fix the mold if Takara Tomy couldn't be bothered to fix it in two reissues. On both versions of my Encore Devy (regular and anime) Scavenger falls off easily and the head portion sticks tightly to the top of Longhaul and feels like it'll break.

I can understand the love, but G1 Devastator is a very faulty mold. Glad that the combiner principle was completely improved when it was time for Scramble City.

I have to wonder how the raiden mold held up in comparison to devy, as weren't they both diaclone originally?

One must have a big stack of cash to find out...
