Fellow Seibertronian Cyberpath has a splendid pictorial review for us of the recently released Takara Transformers Legends LG39 Brainstorm. He compares it to the previous Takara Brainstorm release and we see here how giving the old one's guns to new Brainstorm works out. Enjoy!

LG39 Brainstorm -- Takara's final Autobot Headmaster of the original group. Shipped one month after the last batch and arrived almost at the same time.

Brainstorm looks fantastic! The proportion of the body; the contrast of the colours--!

I've already had a Brainstorm that I liked (LG09) but ordered this one too just because of scale & compatibility; I wasn't enthusiastic about it but it turned out great!

The face sculpt is really well done -- detailed and crisp. But he doesn't look like the Brainstorm that I know as he's got a mouth. There's space between his jaw and "helmet" so I might try to somehow fashion a faceplate for him that would tab there.

Hey this kind of works, no? :))

Yet another Autobot Headmaster that's supposed to have twin-guns but doesn't. Instead he was packed with the generic gun that Chromedome came with. He can however wield LG09's guns! The colour is not exactly the same, but it works.

I was glad to find out that you can transform him without removing the nosecone, but you can remove it if you want a less prominent back.

The articulation is very good, he's even got waist rotation that's not related to transformation; so far only the Decepticons have had it.

He's got the exact same thighs as Chromedome and the shin-transformation is similar.

The transformation is cool and impressive, love the fin storage, the way the back-rest changes into his abs; the windshield, it's all pretty great for a deluxe.

And the jet mode is just as nice as the robot! Though I'm surprised there is no peg hole for a stand.

Brainstorm's drone buddy is a little more interesting than Chromedome's. And it's got this motorbike type mode.

Didn't think I'd have a Headmaster, much less all of them (and two Brainstorms!) but here we are..

Any chance you could provide an extreme closeup (Seibertron.com style) of his face? The first one I bought had a paint flaw on his nose, and the 2nd and 3rd ones that I bought also have paint flaws on the nose or face, but in different places. I'm kind of OCD about facial paint flaws more than anything because of all of the close-up shots I do of their heads and upper torso/body. I just want to know if all Brainstorms have paint flaws on their face paint or I've just got 3 that do. Admittedly, they are small paint flaws, but they are paint flaws nonetheless. I'm extremely picky about their face paint.

Yeah. The taller Brainstorm also got a second printing. Though with this anime accurate one being released, seams like too little too late.

New camera, so settings aren't quite right with the colors yet in my pics of Brainstorm. Still learning about the differences with my cameras. Anyways, here's all 3 heads with flaws. I opened all of them up thinking the marks were blue paint from the eyes which I might be able to remove with my fingernail. However, after looking at this close-ups, it's obvious that it's actually marks in the yellow paint unfortunately.

I've taken the liberty of looking at some Japanese blogs dealing with the figure, and out of the 4 I visited, 2 have figures with a blemish on the face paint:

Alfes2010
NT-san

The other 2 have perfect face paint:

Smogul
Keitai70

Just a luck of the draw in favor of imperfect paint I guess. We'll have to see how this develops.

Think of it as battle scars. :lol:

Anyhoo, Brainstorm overall looks really dang good. Might get me one. The coloration works way better in my opinion than the Hasbro Walgreens one.

I plan on selling them, but at regular retail price. Some collectors aren't as concerned with imperfections as I am due to macro photography.

Ok, 3 out 4 with imperfections... Gosh, getting a perfect one seems really hard to do. Isn't there an import store one can visit that has that figure? Gives one the chance to carefully examine the head as it's visible through the window.

Understandable, just had to ask. I also am picky about stuff like that as I take a lot of photos too. What I was going to do though was put the Hasbro Brainstorm head on the Takara body

There are none in the Chicago area surprisingly, at least not that I'm aware. I'm interested in pursuing that option though if I can figure out how to switch to having a brick-and-mortar store from just an online eBay store. Can't believe that America's 3rd largest city doesn't have an import toy store.

I can. Very hard to scale to a viable point. Astonishingly tough to compete with online vendors on price, plus Bluefin keeps upping their footprint and selection at Barnes and Noble and TRU.

You know what's weird, Portland a city with a massive tie to pacific trade and import, doesn't have a impport toy store either. The closest are the comic-book shops that order certain import items from Diamond Select's catalog.

Diamond via comic book shops are the closest. Trouble is, my experience when I used to pre order via their "PREVIEWS" catalog, it based on "luck". If available, then you are lucky. If not, just cry in a corner. Now with online stores like Amiami, hobbysearch and hlj, you have a 90% 99.99% chance of acquiring one.

And then you have Canada who has at least one in most of its major cities. One of its best is in St Catherine, Ontario, which has a very small population.

In the late 90's early 2000's Chicago had a good import shop, and a shop in Portland was one of the few online places I could find TFs and Microman stuff. Times have changed.

Are you talking about JP Gift at Mitsuwa? They also had a store near Wrigley Field for about a year around 2004 or 2005 before the owner went cray-cray. I live about 5 minutes away from Mitsuwa now. I still think that it can be done or else things like going to conventions to buy Transformers toys wouldn't still be a thing to do. Just have to learn how to cater to the market AND manage the online aspects of it.

What I think is dead are stores that just have merchandise in a store in a city somewhere but don't have those products online. Someone in some far off land wants that unique item and it seems silly not to try to capitalize on both markets. The products should be in store for non-Internet savvy folks and impulse buy folks (but have the prices reasonably priced so that people don't just use you as a toy showroom like Best Buy and Amazon) and the products should also be available online. It's something I've wanted to do ever since the days of Mitsuwa and after coming from Michigan where stores with import or collectible toys was not a rare thing back around 2000.

I love these comics. It's a shame that a collection of these hasn't been made, or that official translations haven't been brought to other languages. I'm sure there's a good audience that would gladly pay money to have these. Oh well, one can hope.

*groans* I just realised why Hardhead calls Cargo/Karugo a "slug" (蛞蝓 or ナメクジ namekuji): Es-Cargo-t. Even fits the overall look of the tank mode #-o

Ginrai finally arrived, and I finally got some time with him today.

There's things I like, and things I dislike. But overall he's a cool figure.

Box, less collector friendly than I expected, but still friendly enough I did not have to destroy it to get hm out, and it still exists in one piece should I want to put him back in.

Truck mode is awesome. no complaints there. The Cab is very nice looking. Very G1. The trailer comes together nicely.

Tiny ginray is very nicely painted cindering he's so very wee.

Noe the Large robot mode. Elephant feet in the room.

Its a strange set of swivels and joint, and one major issue the red heels fold up, so while they offer some support, any amount of pressure backwards and they'll collapse and cause the fire to fall back. Not sure why they did it that way.

Otherwise, he stands o.k once you get the feet and heels in the proper position, but there's no tabs or clicks of indication its just by feeling. And the instructions are not useful at all. Just a couple of arrows indicating how to turn the feet, but nothing else.

His rifles are very flat and hollow, they do look nice from one side, but the other side is a mess. The tab together horizontally into flat double barrelled weapon that can't really be held in any convincing fashion.

Looks like its more meant as a gun emplacement for Base mode though have not tried base mode yet.

Head is, well Prime. Should look fairly nice on the ConvoBat or even on the Voyager Octane-Prime.
Helmet is exactly the same as Hasbro's.

All in all its nice figure. I would not say its $80 nice. But for the $50 I preordered him for, its great.

Anything that isn't a retool or redeco is fair game. So expect Triggerhappy, Hot Rodimus, Doublecross, Perceptor, maybe Chaar and maybe Topspin (depending on how their pretools turn out) to make an appearance.

But on the flipside, Voyager Optimus Prime and Megatron, as well as Leader Sky Shadow have pretools (Octone, Blitzwing and Overlord respectively) that are more favorable for various reasons. We'll have to wait and see.

There's also the possibility that they're done with Headmasters now since they've only announced three Legends figures for 2017 between now and May: LG40 Astrotrain, LG41 Leo Prime, and LG42 Godbomber. Astrotrain is a straight repaint, but the other two are unique to Takara Tomy. It feels like if they were going to do more they'd have already announced them and they wouldn't have numbered these the way they have so that's definitely it for five months. After May, who knows? They could be taking a break or they could be doing more unique remolds like they did with the Wave 8 trio of evil ladies while they wait for Hasbro to release Power of the Primes.

I'd say taking a break because with Leo Prime, there's no longer a so-called "buffer" between Hasbro and TakaraTomy. By May, Hasbro should have pumped out Waves 3 and 4, maybe 5, with enough unique molds for them to play with.

Maybe, but there's plenty still that they could have prepared for before May like Frenzy, or any of the wave 3 guys that came out in December. As for the buffer, Japan got Soundwave in December while a lot of still haven't seen him in stores.
