Top 10/5 most iconic transformations.

Like Transformers whose toys transform usually the same way. For example, Optimus Prime or Wheeljack.

This list is on my mind a lot. The way I had worded it was "top 5 Transformers Toys better than their updates" so that I could include stuff outside G1 if ever there wasnt enough G1. But I couldnt come up with many. Skylynx is number 1, for sure, in either list. Then Fort Max. Maybe Scorponok. Maybe G1 Megatron. But what would come after?

I like the idea of comparing the update to the older version. I would definitely like to read those, especially in the context of when the older version is better.

Along those lines, but a slightly different idea.
How about something like: Top 5 (or 10) Pre 1994 toys that hold up to the newer generation of toys

Which ever date you all think is best. Like you could do pre 2001, but a whole bunch of Beast Wars have excellent articulation and engineering. Or pre-2003, or pre-1999

Like, Generations Jetfire and Classics Jetfire are both awesome and better than the original, but the original still holds up as an awesome and amazing figure.

Thats interesting, but I dont really know how to say something holds up aside from those which are better than the updates.
The lists might repeat too. One toy that I think holds up magnificently well is G2 Smokejumper. As for Jetfire, its a gorgeous toy but I dont know how it holds up if the newer ones are better. I mean like Perceptor and Predaking. Those are awesome and gorgeous toys, but their lack of articulation and poseability along with odd proportions and faces that look off make them very much a part of their time. They are beutiful in that time but next to modern day figures, its just very different. But maybe I am not understanding well. if you could give me some examples and what you mean by holding up we could make this work :)

WJ, good points, you might be right. I was actually going to leave that to you and Rainmaker, and I was looking forward to hearing more.

Jetfire was the only one that I could think of. It is a slightly different idea then what you proposed. I was just saying which older figures don’t look out of place on a shelf with newer figures. G1 Jetfire doesn’t look like cartoon Jetfire but still looks really nice as a robot, cool enough to hang out on a shelf with newer figures. G2 Smokejumper is a great example.

But maybe it is just the newer engineering started around G2 and then perfected with Beast Wars that allows some figures to match current figures.

Transmetal Depth Charge, TM Megatron, TM Tarantulas, TM Terrorsaur are all as good as most Generations toys made today. Plastic was cheaper then and they often don’t have hollow parts, and are well built.

Oh you'll get your list for sure ;)^ And I am pretty sure the direction you are aiming for will maybe form in the discussion it will (hopefully) create. Yeah, G1 Jetfire is a cool looking robot, I get what you mean. And I totally see that progression you speak of. BW does have some amazing toys that are perfectly articulated. I was playing with Powerpinch the other day and he really didnt age one day. I guess thats partly why they havent updated many of those. The only mold from the transmetal 1 and 2 they updated (outside of Titanium Optimus Primal...ooouuu, thats another one for my list!) was Generation Skybyte which is technically updating the TM2 Cybershark mold, kinda. It kinda worked but clearly they were aiming at Skybyte, leaving the awesomeness of the transmetals alone :)

Oh and Fuzor Silverbolt is also an awesome toy that agd really well.

Ok, off to writing now :)

Hey WJ,

Only two listed unpublished lists left. When you have a chance I would love to know which lists may be upcoming (I don't mind if they change order a bit). It gives me time to look at my collection or just start thinking about and working on my own list. It gives me more time to prepare and to contribute (when I have the leisure time that is). Sometimes it is nice to answer the question before seeing other's lists, it is the difference between thinking of an idea on your own versus hearing and responding to other people's ideas. I hope that doesn't sound like a lecture, I just wanted to verbalize what I like about it. Sometimes I don't have any ideas from scratch and I look forward to learning what others have on their minds.

Your wish is my command, I added a few more to show you what I have cooking.

I am really glad you are into these. I write them for the exact reason you pointed out, inorder to know what other people think about particular toys. Especially older toys that we can all rediscover :)

I have a few ideas... Well, quite a lot actually.

Top 5 best Transformers toys with real-world altmodes.

Top 5 male Transformers that would make good fembots (with retooling).

Top 5 best female Transformers toys.

Top 5 best non-humanoid robot modes.

Top 5 most needed (non-G1) reissues.

Top 5 convention exclusives.

Top 5 worst headsculpts.

I am assuming you are exclusing trucks and planes and other transportation vehicles right? I am asuming you mean handheld objects and the like, right?

Top 5 male Transformers that would make good fembots (with retooling).

I had not thought of this one before (maybe because I would rather get new molds than retools). Which would you have in mind as an example? Animated Lockdown maybe?

Top 5 best female Transformers toys.

The list is already underway :)

Top 5 best non-humanoid robot modes.

I have a best casettebot list on the way. Aside from Skylynx, which one wouldnt be covered that should?

Top 5 most needed (non-G1) reissues.

I had not thought of that. Which would you have in mind?

Top 5 convention exclusives.

There will be several lists about exclusives coming eventually :) They will be done by another member though since I do not collect convention toys. How sizeable is your exclusives collection? I ask because if you know your stuff, you could maybe help us out :)

Top 5 worst headsculpts.

Also had not thought of that. Would be hard to not just write movie toys  There is G1 as well, but do you think it would be fair to concentrate on those? Let me know!

No no, thank you for continuing to write these lists! They're fun and I always look forward to them.

Top 5 best Transformers toys with real-world altmodes.

I am assuming you are exclusing trucks and planes and other transportation vehicles right? I am asuming you mean handheld objects and the like, right?

I actually meant "real world vehicles" (so Alternators, most of the G1 cars, MP-03's gorgeous jet mode etc) but uh, that works too.

Top 5 male Transformers that would make good fembots (with retooling).

I had not thought of this one before (maybe because I would rather get new molds than retools). Which would you have in mind as an example? Animated Lockdown maybe?

Off the top of my head, there's Cybertron Ransack (quite petite, high heels etc), Animated Blurr (very slender and svelte), Animated Lockdown as you mentioned, DotM Icepick (curvy, heels, thin waist, the lot), and Beast Machines Cybershark (quite inhuman but oddly feminine nonetheless).

Top 5 best non-humanoid robot modes.

I have a best casettebot list on the way. Aside from Skylynx, which one wouldnt be covered that should?[/quote]
Hmm. I'm personally rather fond of ROTF Rampage but I am in the minority there. If he counts, BW Poison Bite? Ooh! BM Cycle Drone!

Top 5 most needed (non-G1) reissues.

I had not thought of that. Which would you have in mind?

A proper reissue of Laser Prime (and Scourge), RID Megatron, Cybertron Primus and more or less the entire Transmetal assortment, with fixed chrome and in Megatron's case fixed plastic.

Top 5 convention exclusives.

My convention exclusive collection is a whopping zero. I'm British so attending Botcon is not possible unfortunately. There are some exclusives I do like the look of, notably "3H" Megatron, the DOTM Megatron from Breakdown, Shokaract and pretty much the entire Cybertronian BW set. Maybe when I'm rich...

Top 5 worst headsculpts.

Also had not thought of that. Would be hard to not just write movie toys  There is G1 as well, but do you think it would be fair to concentrate on those? Let me know!

One that comes to mind is the deteriorated Commemorative Series Jazz, though that's the fault of mold degradation more than anything. Then there's ROTF Mudflap, a lot of the "turtleface" BW figures, and of course half the Funpub library.

I have been thinking of both these lists. The female one sounds very fun but I am so scared someone is going to go all PC on me. The list would be titled "top 5 most feminin robot modes on male Transformers Toys" since feminin is the shape and not nececarily the gender itself but I fear people will say that a woman can be of any shape. Thats true of course, but it turns the list impossible to do since that would mean any toy can be a fembot and thus there is no point to the list. Dont know how I will do this one :-?

As for the other list, I will do it and simply call it "top 5 Transfomrers Toys with no Humanoid Robot Modes" and I think it would have G1 skylynx, MP Lazerbeak, G1 Ravage, Poison Bite but I dont know who to put for 5. I want to put someone everyone will agree on and I just cant think of one at the moment.

Also, I think I will have 2 list for decos. One being best Decos (period) and the other would be best straight redecos.

Caelus wrote:Top 5 best or most expressive facial expressions on the toys themselves (e.g., the first Masterpiece Starscream).

I know head sculpts are already on the list, but to me this is qualitatively different.

Caelus, who else can you think of for expresiveness. I am thinking of Beast Wars Megatron who has that ninjaturtles expression  But I cant think of too many others

Here's an idea: Top 5 best Movie Optimus Prime toys. There's been so many of them, and there have been some real gems. The DotM Voyager (AKA Super Robot Prime), AoE Evasion Optimus Prime, the first Leader Optimus Prime (the loveable chunk that it is) and of course one of the many versions of the Leader ROTF mold.

Great idea! I have many articles in the pipeline so this one will also include anything we get from the TF5 movie line. As of now I am thinking of the shortlist which would include (off the top of my head):

DOTM Deluxe Prime
DOTM Voyager Prime
ROTF Voyager Prime
ROTF Buster (or Striker) Leader Prime
2007 Movie Leader Prime
AD 31 Leader Prime
AOE Evasion Mode Prime

This one just came to me: Top 5 Best Filler Lines

By this I mean lines that Hasbro(or Takara Tomy) used to fill in gaps in between major releases like in between movies or between cartoon series or just there because Hasbro needed somewhere to dump figures. So this would be things like the original Transformers Universe line, Reveal the Shield, Hunt for the Decepticons, and the like.

Of course #1 would have to be Classics, that line exploded in ways Hasbro never expected and now look where we are!

Emerje
