Okay, don't kill me.

Do I remember correctly, or was a time, or spinoff of, Transformers where humans rode inside.

Any references you can give?

well u might be thinking about headmaster but the transformers started out in japan under a different name and they had human pilots here's a link to the wikipeida page on it http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diaclone

Hmm no, it was similar, but the humans actually cold exist in compartments within the robots (whatever they may be).

I vaguely remember a plotline involving finding a long 'sleeping' ancient robot.

It was in a similar form however - a group of rebel robots fighting an evil dominion.

No-one out there can tell me?

Sounds like the Headmasters and Targetmasters. They appeared in the US season 4 [3 episodes titled Rebirth parts 1, 2 + 3].

I never realized that Volton was so...complicated. I never liked the show. "Oh noes, we have a villain! Combine!"
There wasn't a fight, one slice of the sword later and the big bad villain was toast and all was right with the world, universe...whatever. Blah!

A few years back I came across a couple kids in the action figure isle holding one of the Power Ranger Zords. The other kid pointed at the Voltron lions and asked about it. The first kid said it was a PR Knock-off.

I went to correct him, but that really bad cgi show was on at the time so I let it be.

Somehow, this reminds me of Zoids: Chaotic Century.

A group of mech pilots, fighting against an evil empire, with an ancient sleeping mech (In this case, Zoid EVE, which tuned out not to be a Zoid at all. :-?

wasn't zoid eve the blonde haired girl......... idk all i remember is the liger zero x was awesome......or was it blade liger...... idk
